@ and @ do *not* produce arrows that extend
automatically to accommodate unusually wide subscripts
and superscripts, page 226 of TLC notwithstanding.

I have a feeling that I've seen this before, although

Can anyone help, please?

(Either with 2.6 as the host machine, or the user mode kernel)

Yeah, but really haphazardly. I could run 2.4.19 happily under 2.6.3, but
with 2.4.26-3um it's really flaky.

For example, I'm not able to start postgres under the UML without it locking
hard, but the rest of the installed woody runs ok.

Are you after a vector notation arrow, perhaps? that can easily be done
with \overrightarrow{Text Under Arrow}. I'm fairly sure that will also
extend over superscripts and subscripts, and you can put an arrow over just
the su{b,per}script portion, if that's what you want.

I've never dealt with (or seen) the @ and @ notation before, so it
could be that you're after something totally different -- in which case,
give a descriptive example or something and I'm sure someone will be able to
tell you how to do it.

What is the script written in? Is the server under you're control? I'm
guessing not. If it's PHP then the PHP docs have some tips on getting
around long run-time scripts. Push output to the client earlier or
something like that

Re: [SLUG] skipping dirs in a script

2004-10-12 Thread amos
Just include . in the pattern:
cd /home
for i in *.* ; do
 tar cfz $i.tar.gz /home/$i
done
I assume that tar is gnu tar, which can write gzip file directly, if
that's not
the case then you can do:

 tar cf - /home/$i | gzip $i.tar.gz
BTW, tar is exceptional in that it doesn't require a leading - in
front of its
options. Read its manual.

Also about writing scripts with gnu tools - my personal taste (and
experience)
is that using long-format option names makes scripts much easier to maintain
both in the short and long run.

[SLUG] LaTeX - RTF

2004-10-12 Thread Alan L Tyree
Some time back I posted a question on conversion of LaTeX to RTF. Some
of the replied suggested LaTeX - HTML - OpenOffice - rtf.

That works, but it is not straightforward. I hope this saves others the
frustration that I faced.

1 LaTeX - HTML: I have a book-length file with some self-defined
commands. It also uses a newer index.sty package which permits multiple
indexes based on user defined counters. Hevea, version 1.07, has given
by far the best results.

2 Read file.html into OpenOffice. No hassles. It is the next step that
confused me. There is no Export or Save As from OpenOffice to .rtf or
.doc

3 Solution is to Export as .sxw. Then open the .sxw file which can then
be Saved As a .rtf or .doc file. This has been described as a bug in the
OO mailing archives. Maybe it should be considered a feature, but
documented in the help files.

System is Ubuntu 4.10, tetex 2.0.2 as modified by including a newer
version of index.sty.

Cheers,
Alan

 umm, latex2rtf exists.

But chokes for any number of reasons. The documentation itself says that
it has problems if there are too many labels - something that inevitably
happens with a heavily edited file if using reftex or some other
software that helps with the insertion of labels.

latex2rtf also bombed out for unknown reasons on the large file although
it worked OK on the smaller test file. It also produced rtf files that
my publisher had trouble reading, although that is not necessarily a
fault in latex2rtf.

A simple redirection of input should do I think. Eg
ftp ftp_script
where ftp_script is a plain text file which contains the ftp commands
you need to process to get it done - one per line.

but I just realised that was the man page on a bsd box,

You can script ftp by using an input file instead of stdin. The logon
can be automated with .netrc (man netrc). For example:

Sample .netrc
machine ftp.some.domain
login someuser
password somepassword
Now setup an ftp script file, for example ftp_script might contain:
ls
disconnect
bye
Now execute
# ftp ftp.some.domain ftp_script
This would output a listing of the base folder on the ftp site and then
disconnect and exit ftp back to the shell. No interaction.

set up to run Linux.

Here is a cheap and easy way for someone to start using Linux or for
you to help your family and friends to discover the joys of Linux.

Why bother with the complexity and uncertainty of dual booting Linux
on your|their Windows computer when you can get a good affordable and
separate Linux system.

All these computers will come installed with a user friendly Linux
environment (either our own Debian based SOE OR Ubuntu). They can
look and operate like microsoft windows, allowing people to easily
browse the web, send email with Evolution, and run office programs -
OpenOffice for word processing and spreadsheets (which reads and
writes microsoft office word and excel files.)

I am using a 300MHz with 128MB of RAM running Evolution and
OpenOffice on Ubuntu to send this message.

Price list:
(including 15 monitor, keyboard mouse)
Pentium Classic MMX $ 50
233MHz(64MB)$ 80
300MHz(64MB)$100
350MHz(128MB) $130 --
 (small form) $160
400MHz(128MB) $190
500MHz(128MB) $220

Upgrade monitor to 17 $50

Monitor (on its own)
15 $10
14 Free

The point to remember is these are only advisory prices and are below
the retail second hand price.

I am on red hat 7.3.
Thanks
Louis.
I'm not aware of any timeout limits on Perl CGI under Apache 1.3 (I
can't remember specificaly what RH7.3 bundled with it but I'm guessing
Apache 1.3) - not that that means a lot. There's a general timeout of
300 seconds set on Apache but not sure if that would affect the CGI
execution time.

I would start by looking in the access and error logs of the web server.
Take a look in /var/log/httpd (may also be in /etc/httpd/ somewhere -
it's been awhile since RH7.3 and things may have moved since then).

Try running the script in a shell...how long does it take?
Sorry can't be of more help...

[SLUG] Init script to start VNC server as user (Debian)

2004-10-12 Thread Simon Wong
Okay, so know I'm trying to start a VNC server with an init script as a
given user (on Debian).

As root I have tried running:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] : ~
# start-stop-daemon --start --chuid simon --user simon --exec \
/usr/bin/vncserver --chdir /home/simon/ -- -geometry=800x600

vncserver: Could not create /root/.vnc.

It appears that this is not actually changing to my user BEFORE starting
the process as the man page states.

It seems to be trying to write to root's home dir.

I couldn't find a bug on this so I'm assuming I'm not doing it right.

Anyone know how to make this work, or do I need to make a script that
uses su?

This seems to work but it's not l337:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] : ~
# su simon -c 'vncserver -geometry 800x600'

New 'voyager:1 (simon)' desktop is voyager:1

Starting applications specified in /home/simon/.vnc/xstartup
Log file is /home/simon/.vnc/voyager:1.log

I think you might be right, I'm getting the response now:

Its been about a year since I last tried, but the thing that killed
it's usefulness for me was not handling the url package.

[SLUG] Apple 23

Hi,
Does anyone have any clue about getting an Apple 23 display running at

Haven't tried it yet, but I'd like to get a heads up.
I know it's old but we're using RH 7.3 at the mo.

I've done the 20 ...

It wasn't a big deal just add the mode lines into the config and away you go.
I had more difficulty getting my particular card to operate, which was
unrelated to the monitor choice.
