Yeah, but it be extremely annoying to deal with a program
that insists on a tty. /dev/stdout,stderr,stdin is a better bet.

[SLUG] openvpn test install (almost)

2005-08-08 Thread ashley maher
I'm attempting to build a test vpn using openvpn2 and Ubuntu.

I have installed bridge-utils and openvpn2 using apt.

I modified /etc/network/interfaces as the example in bridge-utils.

I generated certificates fine. For testing I am using the supplied test
certificates.

Both the server and client appear to start properly. (I modded the
example config files minimally for bridging.) Using the bridging howto.

In the server config file is the line:
server-bridge 10.8.0.4 255.255.255.0 10.8.0.50 10.8.0.100

According to the man page that sets the gateway and the ip range for the
clients.

The client does pick up 10.8.0.50 on the tap0. (Which br0 is
192.168.1.101 so the ip must come from the server as expected.)

However on the server there is no ip on tap0. So I'm guessing that is
why no tunnel!

I've tried several things.

Ideas, comments, url's to pages great fully received.

Regards,

Ashley

Would you also consider posting it on the osia mailing lists?

Once it's actually a podcast, it won't need regular announcing! (Sure, might
be good to attach it to an actual blog for what's in this episode info and
hosting simplicity, and then hook up a mailing list to that, for people who
can't podcast.)

Most current blog software will happily puke out the right RSS muck to run a
podcast when you attach files to a post.

[SLUG] Dlink Adsl Modem dropping Packets

2005-08-08 Thread prundle
Sluggers,

I finally gave in with my Telstra connection and did the configuration the
Telstra way. That is the D-link 502t Adsl modem is in routed mode, it does the
pppoa authentication and Telstra provide another /30 address block to put on
the ethernet (lan) side of the modem. All appears to work fine except after
about a day or so the modem starts to drop packets. If you try to connect to
the modem itself on either it's ethernet interface or it's adsl it makes no
difference. So I'm pretty sure the problem is with the modem. This very quickly
gets worse rapidly going up to 50% and soon after to 100% packet loss. If you
re-boot the modem it recovers and all is fine for another day.

It feels like some sort of buffer overflow. The mtu on the WAN connection is set
to 1492 (as per default and Telstra's instructions) so I put some traffic
shaping on the Linux firewall that is connected to the Modems ethernet
interface to try to keep the packet queueing away from the modem. That appeared
to work for a couple of days but then the modem started to dropped packets
again. If you leave the modem for a long period it doesn't recover. Only a
reboot fixes it. Hard to believe I know but a daily reboot is not an acceptable
solution ;-)

The Dlink adsl modem is an embedded Linux device. When it's not dropping packets
I can connect on to it, play with the iptables, route tables etc. If only for
the sake of Linux's reputation as a great network OS I'd really like to get the
D-link adsl modem working. So before taking it up with D-link, I thought I'd ask
the collective wisdom of Slug for any cluesticks.

So after that long intro, to my actual questions:

1. Do I just have a bad apple and should I just get a replacement or is the a
fundamental problem with this model of D-link modems?

2. Is there possibly something wrong with the config that a change to something
like the mtu will solve?

3. Should I just give into the word on the street that dlink are crap and go
get something else?

TIA's

Pete

Re: [SLUG] PDA + Linux - what's a recipie for success?

2005-08-08 Thread Richard

Sorry for the slow reply Ive been busy

OK I just wanted to mention you can still buy the Zaurus 5500 here for US$140 and delivery is about US$38.

You can get a very recent review of the Zaurus 5500 here

The upside of the Zaurus is it runs Linux as many of you know and also it runs QT by default but the KDE guys have a full KDE firmware variant that also runs on it.

Syncing isn't a problem because its just another Linux machine its not a crippled OS. *cough* WinCE *cough*.

If your really game get the Zaurus 6000 it has a better screen and way more grunt and on many websites its massively reduced right now.

Also of some interest are the up coming PDA Mobile phones from Nokia and Motorola and Sony/Ericsson ( the later two have Linux already running on mobiles).

Apparently Nokia are using a free open desktop window manager called Matchbox that was started as a project by a single programmer to create an easy to use graphical working environment for the Zaurus pda, Info on matchbox can be found here.

The matchbox project is an excellent example of how a well done FOSS project can lead to greater things.

This is how stillhq.com is done.

Basically what I have is a custom site with a php function that builds
the rss file once I've added a new article/post.

Part of the reason I have the server is it allows me to muck around with

I'm really anal about how I like things setup :)
