Re: [SLUG] We need an IP accounting package
Check out bandwidthd: http://bandwidthd.sourceforge.net/ Take a look at the screenshots and see if it meets your requiremnets. Regards Jamshid --- Minh Van Le [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello :) I am looking for an IP volume bandwidth accounting package to track user and/or workstation usage on a small network. The accounting software is intended to be installed on the firewall. The network has the following simple architecture: {} {} {Internet} {} {} | | /\ | ADSL Modem | \/ | | = # IPChains Firewall # (Redhat 6.2) = | | .---. ( HUB ) .---. | | | |---+ | +-| | | | +--++--+ +--+ | Workstation|| Workstation| | Workstation | | IP: 192.168.0.55 || IP: 192.168.0.56 | | IP: 192.168.0.57 | +--++--+ +--+ The problem is the monthly ISP download limit (20 gb) for this network constantly gets reached before the next billing cycle, so there is a need to encourage people to be more responsible. The requirements (in order of priority) are, (1) Generate a report or summary of network volume utiltisation to from each workstation and/or network interface (2) Monitor network traffic for times of peak and off-peak activity (plain ASCII, graphical chart or written report (doesn't matter)) (3) If necessary, track websites or external/internal IP connections made from a particular workstation I quickly browsed the info on ipac, nmap, Cacti, MRTG and Squid the other day and was wondering if I was on the right track. I think MRTG requires SNMP, but there are no such devices on this small network. ipac is old and the official source doesn't support 2.4.x kernels (IPChains). I have a tentative title for my talk now on achieving Fast, Small AND Robust in version control storage. I'm going to talk about the current challenges facing bzr in its history storage, the factors that are providing the most shape to those challenges, and a bit of a retrospective about how we got here. [SLUG] Automatix/EasyUbuntu and kernel upgrades
In Ubuntu, Automatix/EasyUbuntu can be used to install a range of things which are not normally available in the distribution. If I use one of these scripts to install something which interfaces with the kernel, what happens when I receive a kernel update and reboot? For example, if I use them to install Nvidia graphics drivers, will X be wrecked after the kernel is upgraded? I am not so worried about my own systems (I can take care of myself), but I am concerned for the ordinary users for whom I have installed Ubuntu. I don't want them all calling me every time there is a kernel update to complain that they can't get graphics. -- Sridhar Dhanapalan [Yama | http://www.pclinuxonline.com/] {GnuPG/OpenPGP: http://dhanapalan.webhop.net/yama.asc 0x049D38B4 : A7A9 8A02 78CB AB1B FCE4 EEC6 2DD9 249B 049D 38B4} The US government actually has a 'terror scale'... a formal measure of how scared to be. [SLUG] Curve fitting in spreadsheets
First of all, I'd like to thank Jeremy Anthorp for his nomination and kind words. I reason I couldn't accept his nomination is that I've enrolled in a Bachelor of Science degree at Sydney University, mostly concentrating on advanced maths subjects. That's been keeping me pretty busy. I'm also doing physics and chemistry - and both of these subjects require varying amounts of analysis of numerical data. In physics we use Microsoft Excel to analyse numerical data we collect - including determing how much uncertainty is in the result and a line or curve of best fit for the data we have found. To give you an example, in the first week we took the distance of all the planets in the solar system from the sun and the periods of their orbits and used them to test Kepler's Third Law. Intermediate steps required included plotting a log line and adding a trend line to the graph - complete with the trend line's equation and a correlation coefficient. How would I accomplish the same task using Gnumeric or Open Office Calc? Failing that, how would I accomplish the same task using some other sort of free software tool such as R or Octave? The above task took me a few mouse clicks in Excel but I couldn't find a way to accomplish the same task in Gnumeric or Open Office Calc easily. Neither of them seem to have a LINEST function, for instance. Thanks in advance. You will find most of the software installed by Automatix and Easy Ubuntu is done by adding a repository to your sources.lst and apt-get'ing. Such as adding universe and multiverse, nvidia-glx will be updated with the kernel. Not sure how EasyUbuntu handles the ati drivers though, that could be an exception. I have used Automatix since early on, and have now used Easy Ubuntu lately as well. I have had no problems at all with upgrades, however I have not yet done a dist-upgrade to Dapper, this may cause problems, but from what I have seen watching the scripts run, if anything does break, it will only be something minor. If its for a newbie, My advise would be to install Ubuntu and use Automatix or EasyUbuntu, I have done it for a number of friends and haven't had any problems (and they always keep upto date with updates). If at some stage you want them to upgrade to Dapper, make sure you have tested the upgrade on your own stuff first. Basically its all pretty good.
