[SLUG] USB hardware query
My computer (bought in 2002) came with four USB ports, two in front, two in back. However, they were all for USB version 1.1. Later, I installed a PCI card with two external USB version 2 ports. At the time, having two version 2 ports was enough. Recently, I decided to increase the number of my version 2 ports, so I bought a new PCI card that has four external ports to replace my two port card. When I looked at the new card more closely, however, I discovered that, not only did it have four external ports, it also had an internal one. I checked the USB ports that had come with my computer. The two at the back seemed to be connected directly to the motherboard. However, the two at the front were connected to the motherboard via a single cable. I can't easily see how that cable connects to the motherboard, since the point of connection is obscured by all sorts of ribbon cables. Is it at all likely that the connection would be via a USB port on the motherboard itself? If it is, I could try to unplug the cable from the motherboard and plug it instead into the internal port on the new PCI card. If I did that, would the two front ports then both operate as version 2 ports? I should add that I found the part number for the cable (IBM; 22P1187) and googled it, but all I got was sites trying to sell replacement cables. I couldn't find anything about what was on the motherboard end of the cable. Thanks in advance for any guidance. In general motherboard connectors for USB are done with header connectors. Each USB port needs 4 wires which are for +5V,Ground, Data+ and Data-.Your IBM cable probably has 8 wires, though it might double up on the power signals and hence only need 6 wires. If the front panel port is in fact a mini USB hub it might even only have 4 wires. Your PCI card probably obly has a single USB port internally, and so have the 4 wires you need to at least connect up a signal front panel port. Depending on how the internal port is presented (as to what looks like a standard USB port or as a header connector) this might make your job hard or easy. Sometimes the pin ordering on these header connectors are different so you need to be sure you have everything oriented the correct way. [SLUG] Graphics card problem with Ubuntu

Since moving to Ubuntu 6.06 I have been unable to get any reasonable speed out of it. I grabbed my daughter's old 9200 ATI (126Mb)and tried that and I still am unable to get games such as Chromium (I use it to check my card) to work properly - the frame rate is so slow that it takes about four seconds for the ship to respond to a mouse movement. Under SuSE (with the older card) it was smooth and fast to respond, under Ubuntu I can get neither card to work properly. Is there some way to set the card up so that it works? Is ther a graphical tool to set up the video in Debian/Ubuntu- I can't find one. I am going to walk out silently, when Betty pops up and says, "so how was everything? Makes me long for the slower days of summer when I could get out for a long run at lunch. We didn't end up finishing it because all the ladies got dehydrated and we had to leave. Not sure what to do about it. My legs and everything else felt great but my gut felt like I had been punched by Mike Tyson. So this morning I set my alarm and got up with the sun. Things were getting tighter and worse. So I split off, saw the finish line, and hustled in. There are no credit cards to max out. That wasn't the point. Dish sucks, or so everybody tells me. I now get to do a bit of rest for a the next few months. People would sit down near us, eat and leave and we are still waiting on food. That would be perfectly reasonable a day or two ago but apparently you have to find this out after the fact after you wait around for these wonderful people to show up. It will allow you to target your market and open the whole world for you. My right foot, right knee and hips will thank me for it. Our wait is also our "fault" I get the feeling. Comcast doesn't offer it. They figure that was an opening issue and its probably resolved by now. Part of me felt depressed and ashamed because I didn't set out to do what I wanted. It wasn't my address. If I stretch it hurts more. There is another in May downtown. It felt good for the first few days but then the internal struggle mounted. Everything just went into a big knot. DIRECTV manufactures this box? DIRECTV manufactures this box? I told them not to come here. Its really easy to zone out and just cruise along. The real challenge will be to hold my fitness up over the winter. Then my mother got me a road ID bracelet for when I get hit. After eating, there we several short classes to choose from. If you ask a question, they seem to tell you like you are dumb. This one is your longest in your training plan. Signature file is those couple of words below your name usually in an email or other document. It wasn't my address. [SLUG] TV cloning in Ubuntu Dapper
G'day everyone, Can anyone point to a good howto for how I might clone my display to my TV through Ubuntu Dapper? I've got an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600. I've installed the ati drivers via easyubuntu and appear to have up to date versions of the linux-restricted-modules installed. I'm running gnome. I'm using the default (possibly auto-updated) version of xorg and have the xorg-driver-fglrx installed. I installed atitvout and it happily told me that it could see both my laptop display and my TV (through composite) but I couldn't get it to do anything else for me. I've attempted to follow the following HOWTOs with no significant success: * http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=221174 The xinerama didn't seem to make any difference The ati howto made the TV flash but that's about it. * http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=23628 Resulted in my login screen showing half off screen, no effect on the tv Also the xorg.conf suggested by Klin'Targ (no result) * http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=141031 It's not a HOWTO, but I tried the ideas there, nothing useful I read the xorg.conf logs and it said that dual head displays were broken and I should use MergedFB. I don't have much of an idea of what that is, but I searched and found this: http://mg.pov.lt/xorg.conf Unfortunately even after using that as a template, all I've achieved is a lower resolution on my primary display. I've played with aticonfig: sudo aticonfig --initial --tvf=PAL-B --dtop=clone sudo aticonfig --dtop=horizontal which both worked in that I my display was mirrored in the TV but the framerate was abysmal. Attempting to play a DVD resulted in me seeing two or three seconds of movie then skipping forward by about the same amount repeating. Xine eventually complained that the framerate was too low and suggested I improved my hardware. Somewhere along the way something suggested that I installed GATOS, but the GATOS page suggests that it's already incorporated into my version of xorg. I've got a mini-HOWTO for patching GATOS to allow TV out, so that's the next step, but I thought I'd ask here just in case there's an easier way. Any suggestions? G'day Ashley, Have a look in your xorg.conf ( /etc/X11/xorg.conf ) to see what driver your machine is using for your card. You'll need to skip down until you see a section starting with: Section Device If it's not using the ati driver: Driver ati then try changing that and see if that improves matters. If that doesn't help, then try installing xorg-driver-fglrx and changing the Driver part to: Driver fglrx A good test to see whether you're getting any difference is to run glxgears. $ glxgears They should run smoothly and at a reasonable speed. I have installed an exttra NIC on my fedora server so I can apply some QOS.On the fedora machine as far as I can tell each nic (eth0 eth1) has their own ip address (10.1.1.30 10.1.1.31) and are pointing to different devices ( comparing mac addresses).Howevver it appears that all other devices on the network seem to get confused as the ip addresses from remote devices seem to point to the one network cardWhat To Do!!! [SLUG] Microtouch USB touch screen X/Y axis swapped
I just got some LCD touch screens in for a customer and unfortunately I didn't get the serial ones I was expecting, instead I have the USB ones. It's pretty cool how it works, just plug it in and start moving your finger round the display and it just works - Fedora Core 5. Only thing is the Axis are swapped around and it needs some sort of calibration. What I want to know is where to start looking to fix it. It appears that somehow the mtouchusb kernel module loads and this creates some stuff under /dev/input which ends up working in parrallel with the PS/2 mouse I already have plugged in. If somebody could explain how this multiple input stuff works, and can be configured, that would be useful too. The answer may possibly be in configuration of these bits. Kernels 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5 (standard) and 2.6.18-1.2200.fc5 (most recent update) make no difference. xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.0.1-8, xorg-x11-drv-microtouch-1.0.0.5-1.2, xorg-x11-drv-mouse-1.0.4-1 are installed. The man page for the xorg microtouch driver is next to empty, says it needs to be written. If somebody has their Xorg source unpacked maybe see if there's anything more useful there but I doubt it. For the serial version I used the xorg 'microtouch' driver, this USB one works without modifying the xorg.conf file. [SLUG] Anti-Spam/Anti-Virus Advice
Could someone offers some advice, we already have an email server up and running communigate on an apple xserve. My manager has asked me if there are any anti-spam/anti-virus solutions that we can use as a pass-thru solution on a separate box. ie:router|anti-spam/virus solution|email server|desktop clientsI have looked at clarkconnect, e-smith, astaro etc. Is there anything that would say run on Fedora (as a bunch of daemons/services). Obviously with other distros have an email server built-in which we do not need.Any help is always appreciated.
