[SLUG] USB hardware query

2006-10-23 Thread Leslie Katz
My computer (bought in 2002) came with four USB ports, two in front, two
in back. However, they were all for USB version 1.1.

Later, I installed a PCI card with two external USB version 2 ports. At
the time, having two version 2 ports was enough.

Recently, I decided to increase the number of my version 2 ports, so I
bought a new PCI card that has four external ports to replace my two
port card.

When I looked at the new card more closely, however, I discovered that,
not only did it have four external ports, it also had an internal one.

I checked the USB ports that had come with my computer. The two at the
back seemed to be connected directly to the motherboard. However, the
two at the front were connected to the motherboard via a single cable.

I can't easily see how that cable connects to the motherboard, since the
point of connection is obscured by all sorts of ribbon cables.

Is it at all likely that the connection would be via a USB port on the
motherboard itself? If it is, I could try to unplug the cable from the
motherboard and plug it instead into the internal port on the new PCI card.

If I did that, would the two front ports then both operate as version 2
ports?

I should add that I found the part number for the cable (IBM; 22P1187)
and googled it, but all I got was sites trying to sell replacement
cables. I couldn't find anything about what was on the motherboard end
of the cable.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Leslie

Re: [SLUG] USB hardware query

2006-10-23 Thread Martin Visser
In general motherboard connectors for USB are done with header connectors. Each USB port needs 4 wires which are for +5V,Ground, Data+ and Data-.Your IBM cable probably has 8 wires, though it might double up on the power signals and hence only need 6 wires. If the front panel port is in fact a mini USB hub it might even only have 4 wires.
Your PCI card probably obly has a single USB port internally, and so have the 4 wires you need to at least connect up a signal front panel port. Depending on how the internal port is presented (as to what looks like a standard USB port or as a header connector) this might make your job hard or easy.
Sometimes the pin ordering on these header connectors are different so you need to be sure you have everything oriented the correct way. There are some instructions on this site,
http://www.usbman.com/Guides/BelkinMotherboard_cable_assembly.htm, which may (or may not) be useful.Regards, MartinOn 10/23/06, Leslie Katz

[SLUG] Graphics card problem with Ubuntu

Using SuSE 10.1 I was easily able to get my old ATI 7500 card (32Mb)to
work properly. Since moving to Ubuntu 6.06 I have been unable to get any
reasonable speed out of it. I grabbed my daughter's old 9200 ATI
(126Mb)and tried that and I still am unable to get games such as
Chromium (I use it to check my card) to work properly - the frame rate
is so slow that it takes about four seconds for the ship to respond to a
mouse movement. Under SuSE (with the older card) it was smooth and fast
to respond, under Ubuntu I can get neither card to work properly. Is
there some way to set the card up so that it works?
Is ther a graphical tool to set up the video in Debian/Ubuntu- I can't

Looks like you'll need to install the proprietary ATI drivers.

[SLUG] TV cloning in Ubuntu Dapper

2006-10-23 Thread Jacinta Richardson
G'day everyone,

Can anyone point to a good howto for how I might clone my display to my TV
through Ubuntu Dapper?

I've got an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600. I've installed the ati drivers via
easyubuntu and appear to have up to date versions of the
linux-restricted-modules installed. I'm running gnome. I'm using the default
(possibly auto-updated) version of xorg and have the xorg-driver-fglrx
installed.

I installed atitvout and it happily told me that it could see both my laptop
display and my TV (through composite) but I couldn't get it to do anything else
for me.

I've attempted to follow the following HOWTOs with no significant success:

   * http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=221174
The xinerama didn't seem to make any difference
The ati howto made the TV flash but that's about it.

   * http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=23628
Resulted in my login screen showing half off screen, no effect on the tv

Also the xorg.conf suggested by Klin'Targ (no result)

   * http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=141031
It's not a HOWTO, but I tried the ideas there, nothing useful

I read the xorg.conf logs and it said that dual head displays were broken and I
should use MergedFB. I don't have much of an idea of what that is, but I
searched and found this:

http://mg.pov.lt/xorg.conf

Unfortunately even after using that as a template, all I've achieved is a lower
resolution on my primary display.

I've played with aticonfig:

sudo aticonfig --initial --tvf=PAL-B --dtop=clone
sudo aticonfig --dtop=horizontal

which both worked in that I my display was mirrored in the TV but the framerate
was abysmal. Attempting to play a DVD resulted in me seeing two or three
seconds of movie then skipping forward by about the same amount repeating. Xine
eventually complained that the framerate was too low and suggested I improved my
hardware.

Somewhere along the way something suggested that I installed GATOS, but the
GATOS page suggests that it's already incorporated into my version of xorg.
I've got a mini-HOWTO for patching GATOS to allow TV out, so that's the next
step, but I thought I'd ask here just in case there's an easier way.

Any suggestions?

J

Re: [SLUG] Graphics card problem with Ubuntu

2006-10-23 Thread Jacinta Richardson
G'day Ashley,

Have a look in your xorg.conf ( /etc/X11/xorg.conf ) to see what driver your
machine is using for your card. You'll need to skip down until you see a
section starting with:

Section Device

If it's not using the ati driver:

Driver ati

then try changing that and see if that improves matters. If that doesn't help,
then try installing xorg-driver-fglrx and changing the Driver part to:

Driver fglrx

A good test to see whether you're getting any difference is to run glxgears.

$ glxgears

They should run smoothly and at a reasonable speed.

All the best,

Jacinta

[SLUG] Microtouch USB touch screen X/Y axis swapped

2006-10-23 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
I just got some LCD touch screens in for a customer and unfortunately I
didn't get the serial ones I was expecting, instead I have the USB ones.

It's pretty cool how it works, just plug it in and start moving your
finger round the display and it just works - Fedora Core 5. Only thing is
the Axis are swapped around and it needs some sort of calibration.

What I want to know is where to start looking to fix it. It appears that
somehow the mtouchusb kernel module loads and this creates some stuff
under /dev/input which ends up working in parrallel with the PS/2 mouse I
already have plugged in. If somebody could explain how this multiple input
stuff works, and can be configured, that would be useful too. The answer
may possibly be in configuration of these bits.

Kernels 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5 (standard) and 2.6.18-1.2200.fc5 (most recent
update) make no difference. xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.0.1-8,
xorg-x11-drv-microtouch-1.0.0.5-1.2, xorg-x11-drv-mouse-1.0.4-1 are
installed. The man page for the xorg microtouch driver is next to empty,
says it needs to be written. If somebody has their Xorg source unpacked
maybe see if there's anything more useful there but I doubt it.

For the serial version I used the xorg
'microtouch' driver, this USB one works without modifying the xorg.conf
file. I would be happy to modify the xorg.conf file if the USB version
could be coaxed into looking like a serial port.
