So far it looks like the units in question, 600va has 2 normal 3 prong
aussie power plugs, and the connection from unit to the mains is the
standard IEC to 3 prong aussie power plug.

The 1100va model has 3 normal plugs to equipment, and IEC to mains.

Now I just got to work out which version I want.

Hello Howard,

Here's my ideas and suggestions:

For the ra0 issue, if you don't get any assistance from this list, then
I suggest you have a look in here:
http://www.vmware.com/community/index.jspa

I believe ra0 is your wireless card but that's all that I know myself.

For VMware Player, by design, it does not allow new guests to be
created. It's only intended to play already built guests. If you are
wishing to create a guest, VMware Workstation, VMware Server or
suchlike will be required. VMware Server is free. I note that you
already have VMware Workstation so just use this.

[SLUG] How to correctly remove a Debian package whose status is 'deinstall'.

2006-10-26 Thread Michael Lake

Hi all

I have had exim installed in the past and it probably was partially removed.
I want to remove all traces of it. Status is indicated as below.

$ dpkg -L exim
/etc/exim
/etc/init.d/exim
/etc/cron.daily/exim
/etc/cron.d/exim
/etc/ppp
/etc/ppp/ip-up.d
/etc/ppp/ip-up.d/exim
/etc/email-addresses

$ sudo apt-get --no-act --purge remove exim
Package exim is not installed, so not removed

$ dpkg --get-selections | grep exim
eximdeinstall

   A man of pkg says:
   PACKAGE SELECTION STATES
   deinstall
The package is selected for deinstallation (i.e. we want to
remove all files, except configuration files).

So how do I remove the files listed by dpkg and have the package manager know that it
is now not installed? I know there is --force but I'm not sure if that's the right
thing for here. The package isn't broken.

dpkg --purge

apt-get remove and dpkg --remove will remove all files except
configuration files and init scripts. It also keeps dselect options

As far as I can tell - dpkg lies underneath all the rest (apt-get, aptitude,
synaptec, whatever).
They are all interfaces to do the file finding and other operations easier
but at the bottom line they all use dpkg to actually install/remove packages
using .deb files.

(I'd be happy to learn from people with more insight into this)

Perfect, thanks that did the trick. I had tried apt-get --purge but that didn't

From memory, yeah vmware-config.pl doesn't really ask you about other
interfaces.

You should be able to force vmware to use ra0 by hand editing
/etc/vmware/locations and replacing all instances of eth0 for ra0.

YMMV though on how well this all works I guess depending on what sort of
security you're connecting to your wireless network on, although I
thought this was all supposed to be supported these days by VMWare

open to the general public, and free of charge.

This month's meeting will be at our new venue, the IBM building, Level
13, 601 Pacific Highway, St. Leonards.

So we can adjust to the venue, we ask that people arrive 15 minutes
early so we can all get into the building and start on time.

A committee member will also be standing outside the building to meet,
greet, and provide directions to the venue.

If you get locked out the building, give Lindsay a call on 0432 768 089.

= Talks =

General Talk: Ken Yap - Migrating authentication from
passwd/shadow/smbpasswd to LDAP for small networks

Tired of keeping password files on a handful of Linux machines in
sync? Heard that LDAP is the solution, but the documentation made your
head hurt? This talk will show you how to set up LDAP. As a bonus you
get to use LDAP as an address directory for email, etc.

Technical Talk: Peter Miller - Compilers and Factories

Peter will be presenting a technique that separates the grammar from
the semantic processing, using simple C++ polymorphism. The use of
factory methods is described, as well as some unexpected benefits and
simplifications.

SLUGlets Topic: Directory administration and tools

Following on from Ken's talk, we'll be looking at best practices for
directory administration, and the tools to aid you in your directory

[SLUG] Getting a Debian network install working on a Dell Latitude 620

2006-10-26 Thread Michael Lake

Hi all

I'm having probs getting a Debian network install started on a Dell Latutude
620.
I have the latest Debian Network install iso on a CD. When I get to select the
network card the machine does not detect the Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx card. I have
various web pages from people who have installed on this machine from googling. One
picked the tg3 driver and said it worked. This does not work for me - the module does
not load. Another web page said that the current kernel didn't detect the card but
they installed then loaded a kernel 2.6.16 and it did detect the card. But I can't
use the debian Netinst to install from if I can't detect the card recognised. Any
other suggestions on what driver I might use. Im using Debian 3.1r3

Hi all,

I plan to attend tonight's SLUG monthly meeting. This will be the first
one that I've attended.

I'm not familiar with the St Leonards area. Can anyone pass on advise
as to where to park the car?

I believe I remembering seeing a post about this some months back, and
for the life of me can't find it. Looks like searching the mail lists
from the website don't work.

Maybe someone can find the post I am thinking of.

Thanks

 Hi All,
Is there any parking near the new venue? If so, where and at what cost?

There's some multi-story carparks provided by the City of Willoughby off
Willoughby Road; I think this will be free at that time. That's about
600m from IBM. Otherwise there is a lot of on-street parking, but much
of it will be metered on Friday night.

Last month there was loads of street parking in Chandos St which is
nice and close. From memory it wasn't metered after 6pm. Well at least
I didn't put any money in the meter anyway.

Hello Billy,

There should be plenty of street parking after 6pm on or in the vicinity of
Albany Street and Albany Lane in St Leonards.

There is one on Pole Ln. between Hume St. and Oxley St.:

(have to enter from Hume St.)

Also remember that it's a spitting distance from the St. Leonards railway
station - consider saving the environment...

My thanks to all that have replied. I now know where to go looking for
a parking spot.
