Re: [SLUG] Ubuntu friendly PCI/USB WiFi?

ASUS WL-167G appears to be supported by rt2500 kernel module (I checked
2.6.26). Also, it seems it's the only one with Linux support specifically
mentioned on manufacturer's website. But I haven't used it so if you really
have to go USB, you can give it a try.*

Anyway I'd like to pick it up somewhere in Sydney today (preferrably
somewhere near one of the stops on the North Shore Line between the CBD and
Hornsby, but I'll ultimately go anywhere that has one).

Would be nice if it was at least 802.11g, but I don't really care.

 Thanks,

Can I just confirm that you are running Hardy and throughput is what
it should be and stability is good. That card has the RT2561 (RT61)
chipset and I Hardy has major issues with the 2500 which have existed
for 8 months and have not been addressed. (of course it was working
fine before then.

I want to be sure the same issues do not extend to the RT61 chips as
they use the same driver.

I'm not sure who dropped the ball, but I'd be happy to do something
towards getting the issue resolved. After reading the full list of
comments posted to trac I can only wonder what's going on. This
chipset has been recommend by the FSF and the company has received
awards for their dedication to Linux, so something weird must be going
on for it to be broken in an LTS release.

Ben:

I'm guessing you have already picked up something -- you did mention
today. However, you have stated 'just works' several times, but I don't
know if anybody has asked what 'just works' means. Are you needing it
just as a plug n' play type of deal, or for doing more complicated
things like creating additional access points, or packet injection?

That said, I have to admit I'm surprised you are having such trouble
with your Atheros based card. I have always preferred to purchase this
chipset, however I always have downloaded the madwifi source instead of
using the restricted drivers that Ubuntu provides.

You may also want to check out one of the Orinoco cards, they generally
seem to be very compatible with Linux.

I've also had experience with a generic wifi usb dongle that I picked up
in Taiwan that used the rt2500 driver; it seemed to work most of the
time.

Either way, I hope your wifi quest is a success.

It's not for me, it's for an end user - so it can't break (eg. after
an kernel upgrade, or possibly a dist-upgrade - (eg.Hardy))

The setup doesn't have to be plug and play per se, but I find it
difficult to imagine a card that would require fiddling yet keep
working well across kernel and possibly dist-upgrades.

That said, I have to admit I'm surprised you are having such trouble

its base on the 513, not 512 like all the known working ones seem to be...

for the reasons above, I don't want to experiment with this.

You may also want to check out one of the Orinoco cards, they generally

I can't seem to find them in Australia. I understand they are
sometimes rebadged but apparently there are issues ensuring the pci id
and vendor id are what is expected...

I've also had experience with a generic wifi usb dongle that I picked up

not for Hardy though.

Thanks. I'm going to grab a d-link one off the FSF list and possibly
the Edimax one as well and see how far that gets me.

The scheduleworld guys sync with gmail contacts and google calendars,

Re: [SLUG] Ubuntu friendly PCI/USB WiFi?

2008-09-02 Thread Ben
Ok I have ordered three options to see how they go:

* Edimax EW-7128G PCI card (rt61 based)
* TP-Link TL-WN550G PCI card (Atheros based)
* TP-Link TL-WN321G USB card (rt73 based)

If they fail to give the desired result, then I can get one of the
expensive D-Link extended range options. They seem to stick with the
same (Atheros based) chipset and should work well, although
occasionally involve some fiddling.

It might be time I learned ddwrt.
