[SLUG] watching Channel Ten videos on Linux?

2010-09-19 Thread Amos Shapira
Hello,

I'd like to send a link to an episode of Good News Week to a friend
and I think I found it
(http://ten.com.au/video-player.htm?vxSiteId=cb519624-44a2-4bf7-808b-3514d34e96e4vxChannel=GNW%20CUTV)
but I can't play the video on my Linux desktop (Ubunut 10.04 32 bit)
with either Chromium 6.0.472.53 or Firefox 3.6.3.
I get the ad playing at the beginning but the episode itself just gets
stuck on the circling timer instead of playing.

Is there a way to view this on Linux?

Thanks,

[SLUG] Firefox 4.0

2010-09-19 Thread Peter Rundle

Hi Sluggers,

does anyone on this list, who isn't running the latest version of Ubuntu and doesn't re-build their Linux desktop every second day
and therefore doesn't have add-apt-repository and ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa or whatever the hell is that on their box,

had any success in finding links to instructions as to how to install Firefox 4.0 beta for normal users? (People still using
Jaunty for example).

TIA's

Pete

P.S yes I'm frustrated and exasperated with Linux and no I can no longer be bothered to try to keep up with the insane rate at
which the community changes things. I'm sure there are a million arguments as to why the accelerator pedal would be better if it
was on the left but it's not, it's on the right so just leave it there otherwise you will just leave a whole bunch of users behind
who will then go back to that other operating system.

Re: [SLUG] Firefox 4.0

2010-09-19 Thread Simon Males
Hi Peter,

It's been a while since I've run a development version / non packaged
version of Firefox but I've quickly tested the following method which
serviced me for a number of years.

Please note this does not 'install' Firefox. I'm basically doing the
Windows equivalent of unzipping an archive and running the executable.

1. Download Firefox 4.0 beta: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/beta/
1.1. Close you existing Firefox browser window
2. Extract it.
3. Open the extracted 'firefox' directory.
4. Execute the 'firefox' shell script. i.e. Double click it (you might
have to hit click 'run' in Gnome).

Steps 2, 3 and 4 can be either performed from the GUI or command line.

Once your happy its working, you can create shortcuts / application
launches on your desktop so you don't have to navigate to the
'firefox' directory each time.

Hope that's clear enough.

Re: [SLUG] Firefox 4.0

2010-09-19 Thread Kevin Shackleton
Hmm, 90 minutes and no response. Is there something good on telly?

I'd wonder why when suggesting that Linux is rolling on too fast Peter
would want to load a beta product?

I've just spent the afternoon rescuing a brand new PC where the capital
city office of a rural business dropped a couple of installs on the
system, and that was that - no configuration or testing. The PC came
with (W7 of course, and) a 60-day trial of Office 2007. The install of
Office 2003 without first removing Office 07 was not a clever move.
That the OS was 64 bit and none of the existing hardware would run
properly either didn't add to user satisfaction.

I was thinking as I was getting things to work that even Debian is
cutting edge compared to these days dropping Office 03 onto the system,
or even offering a 60 day trial of a 3 year old product. It's not that
simple of course - there are mega patches on Office 03 and W7, so
nothing is really that old.

I'm sure there are plenty of IT managers out there who can explain how
they manage the balance of new vs old. For me it's simple - run Debian.
Iceweasel 3.0.6 and OpenOffice 2.4.1. Won't connect to my wifi Epson
TX710 (ok - I haven't tried hard). But no broken dependencies either.

Kevin.

Thanks Simon, those instructions got me going.

In answer to Kevin's question as to why I would want to load a beta product, I'm building a web site and I want to know if it will
be ok in the next version of FF. As 4.0 will be out in a few months, discovering that some aspect of my site doesn't work or
layout properly after I've uploaded it would be a bad thing. Whether the bug is my fault or a problem in FF is immaterial, but
it would be best to test it now me thinks.

Cheers

Hi Patrick,

For general accounting I use WXBanker. I've also used KMyMoney and
Grisbi, which are both OK, but WXBanker is a bit simpler.

You will also probably need an invoicing package, and as far as I can
tell there are no good simple user-friendly invoicing packages for Linux
yet. (If anyone knows of one please tell me.)

I have trialled several packages including one with an SQL database and
a PHP interface via a web page, but it was very cumbersome and
non-portable. I now use an old shareware package from Windows called
Instant Invoice. Unfortunately it is no longer available in that form,
but you can buy their combined invoice and cashbook package from

http://www.instantinvoice.net/

A free 30-day trial is available.

I had some troubles with Instant Invoice in earlier versions but under
Wine with Ubuntu 10.4/Mint 9 it's been bulletproof.

I think your google must be buggy. My google does the right thing.
