Re: [SLUG] Copying mc (midnight commander text) to local clipboard

2012-08-23 Thread kfoskey

Cutting and pasting on Linux has two versions. The 'clipboard' and the x
windows cut.

To use X windows cut and paste simply highlight the text (left click drag)
and the text will be highlighted.

In the second window middle mouse click will paste the contents of the X
windows highlight. (assuming it is not overridden in software somewhere)

Subject: [SLUG] Copying mc (midnight commander text) to local clipboard

I have to ssh to a remote machine.

Then I use Midnight Commander for editing. It's pretty much what I like
but ..

.. Anybody know how to copy text to the local clipboard. It over-rides the
ssh clipboard. I want to cut + paste between ssh windows.

In addition to Ken's comprehensive response, the bottom line action I'd
recommend is to follow the instructions for installation from the "netinst"
image, especially if you have a reasonable access (e.g. any home ADSL
connections is sufficient)

Re: [SLUG] Local Debian 6.0.5 Repository

2012-08-23 Thread kfoskey

I am still a Linux novice but like learning new things.

Welcome

I am thinking of downloading all the ISO files for Debian.

The install process is very easy and the one ISO will cover most of the
tools to run fairly comprehensive computer system without anything else.

The whole install process for Debian is so easy and extremely robust that
you don't really need to worry about hanging onto lots of things. If you
find you need an application then you grab it using one of the many
installation programs or if you are old like me, using the command line
with 'sudo apt-get install someprogram', it then grabs a small amount of
internet bandwidth to download the parts it needs. You can see what it will
download and install from the messages, warning if you want to install a KDE
program on a gnome base (these are for want of a better term look and feel
parts of Linux) it will install a LOT of other programs so if the download
is high look for another similar program and try again.

Regarding the free versus nonfree. I would say most linux users do not
have 'pure' free system with flash immediately springing to mind. So you
need to consider what you want to do with your machine first and the
politics second. You will need to understand there is free as freedom of
speech, free as in costs nothing and paid applications on Linux.

[SLUG] Local Debian 6.0.5 Repository

2012-08-23 Thread Lee Isaacson
Hi all,

I am still a Linux novice but like learning new things.

I am thinking of downloading all the ISO files for Debian.

I found the below link but need some help:-

http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/286

How will I know how to break the items up into free, non free etc

I am not sure what the code name is for Debian 6.0.5

Is there a step by step guide where to show me where to copy the files
to and how to tell Debian to look on my pc first before downloading
from the Internet or even a video on utube.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Lee

[SLUG] Extra Debian DVD's

2012-08-23 Thread Lee Isaacson
Hi all,

I am going to download the Debian 6.0.5 DVD and extra DVD's

The extra DVD's as far as I know are the files in the Debian Repository.

I want copy those DVD's onto my PC.

What is the best way in getting Debian to look at my pc first and then
if it can not find the files to then go onto the Internet to download
the files.

Please advise.

Thanks,
Lee
