[SLUG] question to mutt users
Hi, I'm currently using evolution and I'm trying to convert to mutt. I've worked out a few things so far, but one obstacle is filters. In evolution I'm able to filter incoming mail into mailboxes. How can I do this with mutt? [SLUG] telnet [host] http
Hi, I want to download an html page to a local file. I can do: telnet [host] http GET foobar.html HTTP/1.0 and get the page, but I want the page in a file that I can then parse. I've tried putting the above commands in a script but that don't work. Any suggestions? Hi, I want to include weather data on a site that I am developing (non-commercial) and I'd like to find a free source of frequently updated weather data to use, any suggestions? thanks, Luke -- Luke (Terry) Vanderfluit Mobile: 0421 276 282 -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
[SLUG] tar problem
Hi, I have a slight tar problem (no I haven't been smoking!) I have a tar file foo.tar when I extract it, it has the the following error messages tar xvf foo.tar ~ ../ tar: ../: Member name contains `..' ../tmp/ tar: ../tmp/: Member name contains `..' ../tmp/foo.tar.gz tar: ../tmp/foo.tar.gz: Member name contains `..' ../237_autumn03_outline.doc tar: ../237_autumn03_outline.doc: Member name contains `..' ../assTemplate.doc tar: ../assTemplate.doc: Member name contains `..' ../bibRefEd7.doc tar: ../bibRefEd7.doc: Member name contains `..' ../completedModules/ tar: ../completedModules/: Member name contains `..' ../completedModules/itc129/ tar: ../completedModules/itc129/: Member name contains `..' ../completedModules/itc129/assignments/ tar: ../completedModules/itc129/assignments/: Member name contains `..' ../completedModules/itc129/assignments/ass1/ tar: ../completedModules/itc129/assignments/ass1/: Member name contains `..' ../completedModules/itc129/assignments/ass1/ass1.doc ~ apparently I have tarred it up using the parent directory. I can't remember doing that. The first few lines are also curious. the file foo.tar.gz lives in the 'tmp' directory, where I've made a copy of it to *play* with. It's in the tmp directory that I have carr is there any way I can retrieve these files? currently there is no output. somehow I need to trick tar into thinking that everything should go into the current directory, any ideas? thanks, Luke -- Luke (Terry) Vanderfluit Mobile: 0421 276 282 -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

[SLUG] [OT] calling number display / caller ID
Hi, I'm doing a (hardware project) that requires me to intercept the caller ID on a phone line (among other things). I need the technical specs of the australian phone system, in particular the *ring* section. I've been searching the web for info but I'm not getting many results for the australian system. So far I have a few, but mainly pertaining to the US system. any help appreciated, kind regards, Luke -- Luke (Terry) Vanderfluit Mobile: 0421 276 282 -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

Re: [SLUG] More on Font sizes under KDE Gnome
Hi, I have a very similar situation. I'm running KDE and evolution on RedHat 9.0. The only way I've found to control the 'look and feel' of evolution, which is after all a 'ximian' product (like gnome), is to run 'gnome-control-panel' from a terminal window. Then to open 'themes'. The chosen theme is *remembered* by 'gnome-control-panel', so each time you reboot you need to go through the (gnome-control-panel etc.) routine again. I customised the theme by choosing a them that I liked then going to the file that holds the info in text format. That is a 'gtkrc' file. For example for the 'Bluecurve' theme I'd edit the '/usr/share/themes/Bluecurve/gtk/gtkrc' file. It's a matter of trying out which group of parameters in the gtkrc file determines what in your resulting screen (colours, text size, font etc.) So I got what I wanted finally, beit somewhat indirectly :-) I've posted to several groups about this problem but there is not a lot of light :-( The good news is that it's all configurable if you want to spend the time, Long live open source and Linux. Have tried many, many window managers, always come back to KDE, but happen to think evolution is the best email client. kr, Luke On Sat, 2004-08-28 at 19:33, Rod Butcher wrote: Following up on my previous email, I've managed to control thee font sizes of Gnome-responsive apps, while using KDE, by loading the Gnome Panel (hence having both Gnome and KDE panel running), then killing Gnome panel. Strangely, if I then execute Thunderbird and FireFox again via the KDE panel, they retain the Gnome font settings (i.e. correct size).Similarly, once Gnome Panel has been loaded and killed, GFtp then runs under KDE with correct size fonts. All of which thoroughly confuses me - where do they get there font sizes from ? This still leaves me with other apps like Sweep, which display tiny fonts under any screen manager. Are such apps controllable ? regards Rod -- --- Brought to you by a thunderbird, penguin, gnu and a camel -- Luke (Terry) Vanderfluit Mobile: 0421 276 282 -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
Re: [SLUG] vnc
Hi, What vnc are people using-deploying? Definitely tightvnc. I've just been getting tightvnc server running on a SUSE 9.0 laptop (toshiba a10), apparently it's implemented in java on that distro. It's takes a little longer to load. There are some issues with keyboard layout though, which I think are to do with the laptop. I've also used it to connect to an XP box. Perfect! kr, Luke Luke (Terry) Vanderfluit Mobile: 0421 276 282 -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
[SLUG] custom buttons in KDE
Hi, RedHat9/KDE A while ago I tried to create some custom buttons in the Panel. I wanted to be able to use these to run some 'mount' scripts for USBFLASH, USBHDD etc. I had no problem extending the the menus in the menu editor, that was easy, but To create buttons on the panel that are able to run as 'root' so you can click and thus mount say the USBFLASH drive, how? Re: [SLUG] custom buttons in KDE
Hi, I've been able to create a 'Hard Disc' icon on the desktop, put an entry into /etc/fstab with the 'noauto' option and am able to mount and umount that at will, That's great, but I'd like to have a button that does this for me, I have created scripts that do the mounting and umounting, all I need to do is assign them to a button on the panel, any ideas? Re: [SLUG] /etc/profile
Hi, Just logout and login a user. /etc/profile is processed every time a user logins. No need to reboot. thanks for your replies, why did I think that I needed to reboot? don't know, but just logging out and back in catches any changes in /etc/profile great :-) kind regards, Luke -- Luke (Terry) Vanderfluit Mobile: 0421 276 282 -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

[SLUG] mail filters in evolution
Hi, I'm using RedHat 9, KDE, evolution, Is anyone using the filter options 'regex' or 'pipe to shell script' in evolution? I've created a vfolder of emails older than 80 days, I want the vfolder to delete the messages as they come in there. Because it's a vfolder deleting the messages means they have to be deleted from the original directories they were in. But there is no way to get the vfolder to do that, it has to be done manually. If I create a real folder that corresponds to a real mbox, then I suppose I could delete the contents of the mbox periodically. any suggestions? kind regards, Luke -- = Luke (Terry) Vanderfluit Mobile: 0421 276 282 = -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
