[SLUG] How to get files off hard drive?

2009-02-18 Thread Leslie Katz
I'm conscious that I haven't acknowledged quite a few suggestions that
people have made in response to my question.

I apologise for that. I won't have a chance to get back to this problem
till Saturday and that's what's made me tardy.

Thank you to everyone for their suggestions. I'll try to absorb them on
Saturday.

Leslie

If you're going to use a live cd he might as well use the fedora
live/rescue disk.

Re lvm well I've found it it be pretty useful. It's not that complicated,
and you can selectively mirror more fine-grainedly which I like.

The issue here is lack of backups, not so much anything else.

Sorry to be blunt, but I've had the same (actually worse) situation
(lost about 8 months worth of baby photos) and have been cursing myself
ever since.

EVERYBODY BACK UP NOW. -- (but read Mary's note/presentation too)

I've been in Sydney so if you have solved the problem already just
ignore this.

If you have an older machine it should be pata which means that the
CD/DVD will probably be on a separate pata connection. If so you could
just connect both HDDs in place of the CD/DVD using the cable from the
dead machine.
An alternative would be to replace the HDD in the good machine with the
two HDDs in the dead one using an ide cable with a double connection(the
one from the dead machine probably will be) and boot the machine. you
could then copy the data you want to memory sticks.

Unless you are lucky AND have an older mobo ie tiny heatsink and fan, the
dead fan machine is irretrievably dead, mobo and cpu.

Leslie, being burnt by the absolute bizareness of some Dells I say this oh so
softly ...

a) Don't be silly
b) Connect both A drives on an IDE cable, one as master one as slave if you
had not already configured them so to (presumably) the single port on B
c) Put them on the table or on a book, whatever. If you don't have 2 power
cables, use the power supply from A
Turn on and off both supplies at the same time (but don't be tragically exact)

Now 50% chance B will boot from the A disks, if not use your favorite boot
disk.

To put this in perspective this is a 1 hour task for me

Now the sage words: Until you can use your stats math to show that you need 20
(odd) bods in a room before 2 share a birthday, accept LVM is silly !!! Play
with it, use it as appropriate, but do not rely on it !!!

If the mechanical drudgery is too much heed Marys words about backups and
never use LVM. Go away older wiser and sadder.

if its only to get the stuff of the drives. open the case leave it open
- maybe get an external house fan and point it at the open case
(although with the temp right now it might not be a problem)

and just turn it on, should last long enough to start up and copy the
files over

You might like to try a live distro, such as PCLINUXOS, with which I have no
problems mounting "foreign" drives. Basically, the live distro runs from the
CD and you muck around with mount arguments (someone else may have a more
structured approach here) until it can read the drives. Once you have that
its pretty easy to copy precious stuff to a USB drive or etc.

I have used this several times to do exactly that. It seems that the live
distros are better placed to do this than installed systems.

Re: [SLUG] How to get files off hard drive?

2009-02-12 Thread Leslie Katz

Thanks for replying so quickly, Jake.

After posting, I kept looking. I found a document on the web called
"Accessing a Fedora Logical Volume from Ubuntu".

You were right about the need to install software. I did.

The document next told me to load the dm-mod module. I did.

It next told me to run vgscan. I did.

I was told that all physical volumes for the volume group VolGroup00
couldn't be found. That confirms your point about needing both disks
connected.

I think I might get a second gadget and see what happens when both
physical volumes comprising the logical volume group are connected.

I think that's my best shot, because I haven't got a clue about how I
might get the CPU fan on computer A going again. If I knew that, I would
also have known enough not to accept the default installation in Fedora
9, in so far as it used LVM!!

Thanks again,

Leslie

You need to install the stuff to handle LVM in ubuntu, as i recall it
doesn't come with it by default.
if you spanned the LVM over both disks you will probably need to have
both of them connected to use the volume effectively.

If you can get the fan spinning again it'd probably be enough to get
the other one to boot.
