No. A copy is a copy, and licenses are licenses to make copies. That's why the licenses explicitly say you can make one backup - if they didn't, you couldn't make any backup. It's the number of copies you're granted (although there may be other terms, of course). It's copyright law - the license grants deviation from 'natural' circumstance, which is that no one but the author can make copies for any purpose. It may be necessary to restrict running to one - also note that I was looking at the W98 EULA. MS may have become wiser in later versions. I think that is the point: the purpose of the clause is to restrice usage to one running copy on one machine. That isn't violated. In the event that the clause is ambiguous (which this discussion verifies) then looking at the purpose is one way forward.
