Personally, I like how my Futaba 9C has a servo test feature, where it
slowly cycles all the channels/servos back and forth with many small
discrete steps.

That way, you just set your TX down, and walk off with the plane for a
range test. As long as the servos are steadily moving back and forth,
you're good. If they start jerking or stuttering or stopping
completely, then you're not good anymore. This works with whatever RX
you've got, be it PPM, PPM w/ DSP, or PCM.

If you're holding the plane, you can hear the servos all going
tick-tick-tick-tick and anything going wrong is very obvious just from
the sound alone, though of course you can watch the control surfaces
yourself too.

The problem with looking for glitches is that some RX's don't glitch
(or glitch rarely), and as for waiting for it to go into the signal
loss mode, well, it won't do that until several frames have been lost
in a row.

I've no idea if other radio gear has a servo test feature (my 8U
didn't, my Hitec Eclipse 7 doesn't, and I don't have any other higher
end gear from other manufacturers) -- but they should!

2006-06-05 Thread David Register
Don't know if I'm the only one with this experience but both Rxs that
I've used with DSP and other front end signal processing have failed
miserably in my discus planes. These are the Sombra 7 and the FMA M5V2.

I had (still have) very good response from my standard M5s (no longer
available) but get lock-outs and swamping with the V2 at contests. Same
with the Sombra, even after the temperature problem had been addressed.
They are both retired now.

Not limited to low and slow and coming back. I have several metal roof
buildings at the field where I fly and both these Rxs run into problem
within several hundred feet of these structures. My Futaba's, Hitec E6's
and old M5's go through these regions without any problems but both of
the other units tend to go crazy, lock out and crash. I suspect that the
bounce from the metal roof presents a stronger signal than the direct
path RF and the slight time offset confuses the filtering circuitry.

This is probably an excellent technology but may not be fine-tuned yet
for some applications?

[RCSE] For Sale, Polk Seeker 2 8 Channel Synth RX's

2006-06-05 Thread GordySoar

Hi guys,

I have used Polks for the past 4 or 5 years, they are compatible with any
brand, fit Sharons to Pikes to Supras and work great in Pike Carbons.

I am not flying as much or as many ships as I did, and am going to trying
the new Fusion Hitec Synth and JR Synths.

So if you would like to pick up my Polks for $50 each, shipping $4. let me
know quick, I leave for Pensacola and Maryland/Delaware Wednesday morning.

I have 5 of them available. New price is $80, plus shipping. All in perfect
condition, I'd say they have never been crashed but I don't want to jinx myself
for the future :-).

Wait and Wail.

RE:[RCSE] For Sale, Polk Seeker 2 8 Channel Synth RX's

2006-06-05 Thread Jerry Leach
I beg to differ. I tried to use a Polk 8 on a scale sailplane using a
Vision and had interaction between channels. Of course I was using all
channels. Particular channels were tow release and retract, which were
full throw commands, but the end result was an unusable system. I tried
getting a remedy or at least an explanation from Polk's but they were
not helpful at all.
I assume they work correctly with the current brands and models but I
thought I should convey my experience.

Sorry Gordy- hope it doesn't kill any deals.

[RCSE] Re: DSP issues

2006-06-05 Thread Jeff Thompson
I've had problems with the earlier Berg receivers glitching badly
ultimately causing crashes on the slope; same with the Polk Seeker 6
synthesized RX (two receivers, two out of control gliders that
crashed.) Everyone seems to be rushing to DSP, while I'm lamenting
Hitec's changing the Super Slim to DSP and the loss of the bulletproof
555. Fortunately JR (Sport) is starting to make small negative shift
receivers (but a 7 channel would be nice) they're as reliable as can
be. Apparently ABC W is quite different than DSP. The results sure
are different.

I thought that may be the first hardware item lost. Good thing it is
silver color and not black. Although the best method for finding
small hardware parts in the grass will not work with that special
nut, it's aluminum, so a powerful magnet will not attract it. Maybe
I should paint it fluorescent orange.

I can't remember exactly but a Legend probably has something like a SD7037

be indicated.

A rule of thumb is only a starting point, test flying is the proof.

Looking for Advice on Wing Incidence.

I am looking forward to flying in the June ESL event at LISF on Long Island.
I hope to see some of you there.

I have a old yellow and blue Airtronics Legend that I am trying to tune up.
I picked up a wing incidence meter and am trying to set the wing/h-stab
incidence. I don't have a recommended spec so I am trying to shoot for
something reasonable.

If I set the stab at 0 degrees on my GP incidence meter, the wing measures
1.5 degrees below the zero. I guess that would be 1.5 degrees positive
relative to the stab, correct?

Any recommendations on a good starting target?

It used to be more but I added 1/32 in shims under the rear wing hold down
to raise the back of the wing about 6 months ago and it seemed to fly
better. So I bought the incidence meter and want to set it correctly.
Unfortunately I have no idea if I am right on the money or way off. I have
the build manual but there is no recommendation in the book.

Would a 0 degree difference between the wing and the stab be a reasonable
starting point? I am thinking that there should be some difference but I may
have too much.

I hope to be able to upgrade to a Mantis or similar by the end of the
summer, but for now this is what I have to fly. Until then, I will chalk up
the work I do on this plane as a learning experience. Any advice would be
appreciated.

Don --

Good to hear about the new Berg stuff being able to stand up to Poway!
It's true the early, early versions of the Berg 4- and 5-channel
(pre-Castle) receivers had issues with the DSP, and hence released the
DSP II, which I can only assume is at least what they are using in the
new Castle Bergs.

For what it's worth, I fly Berg 5's (pre-Castle stock) in my DLGs, and
have never had a problem. Flew my Polecat EZBD to great new heights
(2000 ft or more) on Sunday (beating Gordy and his Super AVA, of
course!) using a spare Berg 5 DSPII. Yeah, I certainly thought Oh man,
I'm 2500 feet up with a Berg!, but that thing never failed me. Two
weeks ago I managed an LSF IV 1-hour flight with the same ship. This
Sunday, however, I only managed 45 minutes - which was not the fault of
the receiver. :)
