Re: [Soekris] Impossible to boot on hard drive... Please help
The Ready light doesn't light up on my net6501 either. I'm not familiar with the Linux distribution you installed. I had similar troubles trying to install the pfSense 2.0.1. It tried to load the system over PXE. The boot loader would start up but then it ended up being stuck. I posted on this mailing list and someone pointed out that I was trying to boot the distribution that expected keyboard and video, instead of the serial console. Try installing pfSense on a memory stick from the link below and see if that works for you. If it does, at least you know your machine is not faulty. http://files.chi.pfsense.org/jimp/pfSense-memstick-serial-2.0.1-RELEASE-i386.img.gz Good luck, Ovidiu 2012/3/9 Eric F 3rik...@gmail.com: Hello, It's been two weeks since I've received my net6501-30 board, and since I haven't managed to install smoothroadster-2.0.2, a firewall that is ready for COM port communication. After installation, it says installation finished, reboot When I reboots, I have the message GRUB Loading stage2... then nothing else. Just like if GRUB was not installed well. I've thought my net6501-30 board was damaged, so I've ordered another one. Now it automatically boots on me USB key (the first board didn't) after searching the PXE boot (the first one didn't too) So I think that my first board is damaged. I'm still stuck at GRUB Loading stage2..., it's getting on my nerves. My 2.5 HDD is Port-00: Hard Disk, FUJITSU MHZ2250BH G2. May it not be compatible with net6501-30 ? Please help me, I do not know what to do :/ A last question : On the 2 boards I have, the Ready LED never goes on, is it normal ? I thank you very much for your help ! Re: [Soekris] confused about installing pfSense on net6501
Stuart, this is a good point. I did some research and it appears this is the case. I found this document very useful: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/serialconsole-setup.html Too bad I found about it after installing it the hard way :( I might give it a try just for the kicks. Robert, thanks! It looks like none of the official mirrors have the -serial version: http://www.pfsense.org/mirror.php?section=downloads Ovidiu 2012/3/1 Robert Guerra rgue...@privaterra.org: Make sure you are using a version of the pfSense installer that works well with a serial console, as is the case with Soekris Devices. Here's where I downloaded the image: http://files.chi.pfsense.org/jimp/ http://files.chi.pfsense.org/jimp/pfSense-memstick-serial-2.0.1-RELEASE-i386.img.gz - I then plugged in the USB drive to my mac. - Then I used a combination of gzcat and dd to write the downloaded image to the USB (ref http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/HOWTO_Install_pfSense#Mac_OS_X ) gzcat pfsense-embedded.img.gz | dd of=/dev/disk[n] bs=16k (where n = the drive # corresponding to your USB drive) - unmount the USB drive from your PC - connect up the serial cable to your PC - load drivers (if needed) to get the serial cable to work - Start up your soekris, and change the default connection speed to 9600 N1 - Reboot the device - Set your serial terminal program to 9600 N1 - connect the USB drive to the external USB connector on your Soekris - Watch for control-P to be displayed, then press it on your PC . This will bring the Soekris into terminal mode - Type - boot 81 - to have the soekris boot from the USB drive - The PfSense installer when then start... Robert -- R. [Soekris] confused about installing pfSense on net6501
Hi there, I just got two net6501 boxes and I'd like to install pfSense on them. I'm new to both pfSense and Soekris hardware, so please bear with me. I tried at least three methods, with various degrees of success. Method 1: PXE install I first tried to use PXE to do the install. I have a small machine that runs dnsmasq as DHCP and TFTP server. I downloaded the pfSense-2.0.1-RELEASE-i386.iso.gz and installed the contents of the file in a directory accessible to the TFTP server. I'm serving the boot/pxeboot file from the tftp server. The net6501 box finds the pxeboot file, but it gets stuck shortly after: Building the boot loader arguments Relocating the loader and the BTX Starting the BTX loader It looks like the next load phase never happens. Method 2: nanobsd install On a Mac machine I put the contents of pfSense-2.0.1-RELEASE-2g-i386-nanobsd.img.gz on a 2GB memory stick. I placed the stick in the internal USB slot where it's recognized just fine: Controller Bus#02, Device#06, Function#00: 02 Ports, 01 Devices Port-00: Hard Disk, INTEL SSDSA2CT040G3 Port-01: No device detected Soekris USB Expansion ROM ver. 1.01 20111203 81: USB 01 Single Flash ReaderXlt 997-64-63 2011 Mbyte When I type 'boot 81' I get 'Missing operating system' Method 3: Install pfSense on hard drive on a different machine I installed pfSense on a machine with screen and keyboard and selected the embedded kernel. When I plug the hard drive back in, I do get past the initial loader stage, but then the screen is garbled. I do set the serial to 9600 8N1 as pfSense is supposed to use that once it boots. What am I doing wrong in my attempts? I'd prefer to install over PXE, but I'd love to install through other means as well. Re: [Soekris] confused about installing pfSense on net6501
An update on this. I gave method 3 another try (install pfSense on a SATA hard disk inside another computer, then move it inside the net6501). I chose again the embedded kernel and this time it worked. I don't know why it didn't work in the first place. Another install method I tried was with a SATA CD connected to the internal SATA bus, but that didn't work. The installation process is painful, I wish the net6501 would boot directly off a USB CD. Thanks for the help and pointers!
