The Ready light doesn't light up on my net6501 either. I'm not familiar with the Linux distribution you installed. I had similar troubles trying to install the pfSense 2.0.1. It tried to load the system over PXE. The boot loader would start up but then it ended up being stuck. I posted on this mailing list and someone pointed out that I was trying to boot the distribution that expected keyboard and video, instead of the serial console.
Try installing pfSense on a memory stick from the link below and see if that works for you.
