RE: Painting weights smooth tool trouble

2012-07-16 Thread Eric Cosky
It turns out the object scale was set to 0.01 and normalizing the scale
allowed smoothing to work as expected. It seems as if the smoothing calcs
are perhaps using untransformed points for the math or something. Either
way, problem solved. Thanks!

Check the scale of you object center as well as your mesh size relative to
do units. Extreme values can mess with smoothing math results.

Naturally the moment I hit send, I learn something else possibly useful...

If I dial the paint radius up to a value large enough to encompass the
entire object, it will in fact smooth. If I dial the radius down to anything
small enough to be a useful painting tool, it doesn't seem to do anything.

Hi,

I've been working on the envelope weights for a fairly simple model and I am
hitting a problem where the smooth weight paint tool seems to have no effect
at all. The mesh had weights originally set up by automatic enveloping using
inclusion/exclusion/limit volumes, and I need to tweak the values. I can
paint the weights using Abs and Add. Reveal shows grey while I'm painting
but reverts back to what it was. The problem is that Smooth and Erase don't
seem to do anything at all (I'm really just interested in smooth).

Opacity is at 100, the mesh is selected and the weight panel is visible. I
expect I'm just doing something obviously wrong, but after spending way too
much time trying everything I can think of and getting nowhere I have to ask
if anyone might have an idea what silly thing I'm overlooking here? I just
want to hit the smooth button and smooth a few weights (not the 'apply
smooth' command to selected points but I'll probably resort to that if I
can't figure out this seemingly trivial feature); I've done it plenty of
times in the past and I'm not sure why it is failing now. Already tried
restarts, freezing, time on Google, disconnecting the wacom, and banging my
head on the wall a few times..

Painting weights smooth tool trouble

2012-07-16 Thread Eric Cosky

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

I should add that I already tried to extract the arrays from the command's
input arguments like this, but resulted in zero-sized arrays:

   Application oApplication;
   Context oContext( in_ctxt );

   LONG n = 0;

   CValueArray aArguments = oContext.GetAttribute( L"Arguments" );
   Parameter oParameter   = aArguments[n++];

   CTimeArray   aFKeyTimes  = aArguments[n++];
   CDoubleArray aFKeyValues = aArguments[n++];
   CTimeArray   aFKeyTangentsLeftX  = aArguments[n++];
   CDoubleArray aFKeyTangentsLeftY  = aArguments[n++];
   CTimeArray   aFKeyTangentsRightX = aArguments[n++];
   CDoubleArray aFKeyTangentsRightY = aArguments[n++];
   CLongArray   aFKeyInterpolations = aArguments[n++];

Subject: SDK: Converting CValueArray to array of another type

2013 SP1 has a bug (regression) where it takes forever and a day to write data
onto FCurves using scripting. Therefore I am writing a self installing command
in C++ to work around that bug. The command needs to accept 7 values.

The command's argument list looks something like this:

   // Arguments
   ArgumentArray oArguments = oCommand.GetArguments();

   oArguments.AddWithHandler( L"Parameter", L"SingleObj" );
   oArguments.Add( L"FCurveType", siStandardFCurve ); // FCurve key
value type (float, int, boolean, ...)
   oArguments.Add( L"Interpolation" );// FCurve
interpolation
   oArguments.Add( L"Extrapolation" );// FCurve
extrapolation
   oArguments.Add( L"SI3DStyleFlag", false  );// FCurve curve
type (Cubic vs. SI3D)
   oArguments.Add( L"FrameOffset",   0  );// offset for key
time(s) to adjust for pasting.
   oArguments.Add( L"aFKeyTimes");// 1D array of:
FCurve key times
   oArguments.Add( L"aFKeyValues"   );// 1D array of:
FCurve key values
   oArguments.Add( L"aFKeyTangentsLeftX");// 1D array of:
FCurve key tangent
   oArguments.Add( L"aFKeyTangentsLeftY");
   oArguments.Add( L"aFKeyTangentsRightX"   );
   oArguments.Add( L"aFKeyTangentsRightY"   );
   oArguments.Add( L"aFKeyInterpolations"   );// 1D array of:
FCurveKey Interpolations

//==
// _Execute()
//
//==
SICALLBACK ML_FCurveWrite_Execute( CRef& in_ctxt )
{
   Application oApplication;
   Context oContext( in_ctxt );

   LONG n = 0;

   CValueArray aArguments = oContext.GetAttribute( L"Arguments" );
   Parameter oParameter   = aArguments[n++];

   CValueArray aFKeyTimes  = aArguments[n++];
   CValueArray aFKeyValues = aArguments[n++];
   CValueArray aFKeyTangentsLeftX  = aArguments[n++];
   CValueArray aFKeyTangentsLeftY  = aArguments[n++];
   CValueArray aFKeyTangentsRightX = aArguments[n++];
   CValueArray aFKeyTangentsRightY = aArguments[n++];
   CValueArray aFKeyInterpolations = aArguments[n++];

But in order to apply the incoming data onto an FCurve, the 7 CValueArray
arrays must be converted to specific data types to satisfy FCurve.SetKeys()
like  this:

LONG NbKeys = aFCurveTimes.GetCount();

   CTimeArray   aFKeyTimes;
   CDoubleArray aFKeyValues;
   CTimeArray   aFKeyTangentsLeftX;
   CDoubleArray aFKeyTangentsLeftY;
   CTimeArray   aFKeyTangentsRightX;
   CDoubleArray aFKeyTangentsRightY;
   CLongArray   aFKeyInterpolations;

for ( LONG i = 0; i < NbKeys; i++ ) {
  aFKeyTimes[i]  = (CTime)aFCurveTimes[i];
  aFKeyValues[i] = (double)aFCurveValues[i];
  aFKeyTangentsLeftX[i]  = (CTime)aFCurveTangentsLeftX[i];
  aFKeyTangentsLeftY[i]  = (double)aFCurveTangentsLeftY[i];
  aFKeyTangentsRightX[i] = (CTime)aFCurveTangentsRightX[i];
  aFKeyTangentsRightY[i] = (double)aFCurveTangentsRightY[i];
  aFKeyInterpolations[i] = (LONG)aFCurveInterpolations[i];
}

   // Apply the FKeys onto the FCurve

   oFCurve.BeginEdit();
  oFCurve.SetKeys(
aFKeyTimes,
aFKeyValues,
aFKeyInterpolations,
aFKeyTangentsLeftX,
aFKeyTangentsLeftY,
aFKeyTangentsRightX,
aFKeyTangentsRightY,
true
);
   oFCurve.EndEdit();

Anybody know of a typecast that can be performed on the entire array upon
extracting from the command's argument list so I don't have to iterate and
convert each array?

London Softimage Creatives drinks meet up

2012-07-16 Thread Andy Nicholas
Hi everyone,

I'm pleased to announce a drinks meet up for the Softimage user group in London
next week. It'll be on Wednesday 25th July at 7pm, upstairs at The Wheatsheaf
pub.

http://www.softimagecreatives.com/siclondon/?page_id=955

Following the overwhelming feedback we received from the last event, we've
agreed to use this meeting to consult the putting together of a survey to poll
users about how they'd like to see Softimage improve. After the event, we'll
design the survey and send it out to everyone in the community to fill in.
We'll then collate the results, and send the data directly to the Softimage
development team as well as publishing it on our website for all to see.

In a nutshell; it'll be a survey designed by the community, for the community,
and we hope that it gives Autodesk some quality feedback of how we'd like
Softimage to move forward.

We're planning to send the final survey to everyone, not just the London user
group, so no matter where you are, please feel free to contribute your views
and opinions using the online form (see below) or our website. Note that the
form linked to below isn't the actual survey, it's just a way for us to
understand the breadth of opinion, and it'll be part of helping us design the
survey that we'll send out in a few weeks time.

Those who registered for the event in May will have already received an email,
but for those who didn't, make sure you check it out below as it has all the
links and details.

Thanks for your support.

All the best,

Andy

Dear Softimage Creative,

It's been nearly two months since the amazing event we had back in May, and you
may have been wondering what we've been up to. Fear not! We've been listening
to your feedback, and now we're ready to take the next step.

So what's next? Well, we're announcing an informal drinks meeting upstairs at
The Wheatsheaf pub (which is right opposite where we held the last event at
Jerusalem). It's going to happen at 7pm on Wednesday 25th July. That's just
over a week away. There's no need to register.

We've approached Autodesk and asked them if we can provide feedback about
Softimage and it's future development. When I say "we", we actually mean YOU!

It just so happens that this is perfect timing in the release cycle of
Softimage. If we can give Autodesk quality information and feedback about
Softimage now, there's a good chance of us influencing the development over the
coming year. As ever, there are no guarantees or promises, but I'm sure you'll
agree that this is a great opportunity.

So how are we going to gather this information? The plan is for it to be a two
step process. First, we meet for drinks on the 25th and you tell us how you'd
like Softimage to move forward. This will help us design a survey that we will
send out to a wider audience. The survey is the second part of the process and
is what we use to gather the information that will eventually get sent to
Autodesk.

To get the conversation started, we'd like everyone who comes along on the
night to think of the top 5 things that you'd add, fix, or change in Softimage.
If you have some suggestions for survey questions too, then we'd love to hear
them.

We'll hand out forms so that you can tell us your thoughts on the night, but if
you can't make it, you can use this online form
(http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PGXLTT3), or contact us at any time via our
website (http://www.softimagecreatives.com/contact)

Get the full details and latest news for this event on our website
http://www.softimagecreatives.com/siclondon/?page_id=955

Finally, thanks to everyone who filled in the survey about the event we held in
May. The results are now online here:
http://www.softimagecreatives.com/siclondon/?page_id=928.

Best wishes,

The Softimage Creatives Team

Hello,

I'm trying to get my head around ice modeling again after not succeeding the
first time around and I have a few questions.

I can build a basic shape with Create Topo, easy enough. If I then want to
repeat an Extrude Poly Island, the repeat loop doesn't repeat.

Is there a good resource for ICE modeling I should maybe be looking at? It
currently seems everything I try doesn't do what I expect.

Thanks

I can build a basic shape with Create Topo, easy enough. If I then want to
repeat an Extrude Poly Island, the repeat loop doesn't repeat.
Is there a good resource for ICE modeling I should maybe be looking at? It
currently seems everything I try doesn't do what I expect.
Thanks
Chris

That's good news, I new there were a few things broken in the initial release,
I was hoping most if not all were taken care of with sp1.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Hey Folks,

This may have been asked here before but possibly not since sp1...
What is the general opinion of Soft 2013 in production?, I guess as it has been
indicated there will not be another release for quite a while AD feel it is
ready.
Of course I am far more interested in hearing real life stories of woe/joy.

Cheers, Nick

Have you guys heard there are problems? As far as I know it's fine. We've
been using it here with no problems. I'm sure there are niggles as with any
major release, but unless you have good reason, I'd jump straight in and
start using it.
