Thank you.

I did some more digging an tried the username instead of my email address
and was taken to a seemingly different account with Softimage in it. Seems
like some database mix up that got me two accounts for some reason. Will
talk to support when I have the time.

RE: Wiki EOL soon

2016-08-19 Thread Maurice Patel
My problem is I cannot actually gauge whether this is really a serious issue or
not.
I know quite rightly that people are upset with the EOL of Softimage so I am
not sure if what is being expressed here is just a reference of that anger
(which I can do nothing about) or really related to the wiki being a useful
resource rather than an obsolete website no one visits. There is no point
trying to save an obsolete website hoping to fix anger at the EOL of Softimage
because it will not. Anyway I am still researching options including releasing
the data (if it can be done so in compliance with our privacy rules) to the
community– I do not know how feasible anything is.

So what you are say, Maurice, is because some people have been making
comments that you don't like, or are not constructive, you are going to get

You either want to do the right thing or you don't.

Your message had the same tone as a parent getting upset with children,
and then acting childish to get back at them.

Everyone is being a bit childish now, but none of the people you are upset with
started any of this.
It started with Autodesk killing Softimage, and continues with killing the wiki.

You didn't personally "do" any of that, but the company you work for did.
I may have missed it, but I did not see anyone personally insulting you
(and if they did, that was wrong). But your response was as if they did.

Which honestly, and with no malice intended, is not exactly helping the
situation either.

Right, that website produces only 0.1% traffic of all AD websites.
Therefore it has to be killed.

RE: Wiki EOL soon

2016-08-19 Thread Schoenberger

Sorry that I made a joke about it. But This does not mean that this wiki is not
an important place in case you have an issue with
Softimage.

Let me explain:
>From the experience with Autodesk, the Softimage user are always confronted
>with a made decision. Made by people who have little or
no connection to Softimage and their user base. This time, it is "The Wiki will
be dead". Instead of reaching out and asking this
Softimage group if the wiki is still important and useful, an admins check the
traffic and decides this it is not important any
more.
The Wiki is not used for the every day job, it is used if we hit a wall and
need help. Therefore it does not produce that much
ammount of traffic.

As you have seen it is still important this and then. And with that in mind, we
(Autodesk and the users) could have found a way.
Instead it is another "Live with it" notice. And now, users think again they
are on their own and start downloading the website page
by page with tools.
And as I think that we can not influence anything at Autodesk regarding
Softimage, I prefer some gallows humor.

Some questions and more background:
Did the admin reach out to the Softimage departement to ask if the wiki can be
shut down?
I could not assume that an admin will remove a website without asking the
responsible departement, does he?
And the Softimage departement, did they know that the wiki means? If they do
not know, why don't they ask us? Because a dead
software does not require any websites? Another of these "Softimage is dead and
therefore " decisions that we have to struggle with
since years.

Softimage users have tried to influence Autodesk right from the beginning. When
Softimage was bought by Autodesk, many customers
have not continued their maintenence, because they did not know what will
happen. Will it be another app that gets killed like some
others have already been? Or will it continue and rise? They waited to see at
least some signs if Autodesk will support Softimage
and continue for exampple the road map for ICE. Instead we heard that AD build
up a new non-SI-experienced dev group in Singapore.

At that time Softimage users have tried to get in contact with Autodesk and
tried that Softimage will be seen as one of the 3 3D
applications at Autodesk. But we failed. All flyers had Maya and 3dsmax only.
The main AD website has not listed Softimage beside
3dsmax and Maya. And so on...

Sorry that we have lost faith that Autodesk will be doing something in the
interest of Softimage users.

I can't find Softimage listed under products. Is the old subscriptions

Re: Wiki EOL soon

2016-08-19 Thread Morten Bartholdy
That is very generous of you Matt. I hope it will be possible.

Maurice, I understand your resentment/frustration over bitter remarks made
here, but try see it from our perspective. Again Autodesk is removing a tool
which is very valuable to a great number of os - low traffic or not. And it
seems it would do little to no harm to Autodesk to just keep that server
running or copy the Wiki to a new server, if yuo need to replace hardware or
set it up elsewhere.

We have known about Softimage EOL for some years now, but it has definately not
made me any more happy about Autodesks decision, and having started learning
Maya, I am beginning to grasp just how lucky I have been having chosen to use
Softimage instead, that is until you guys decided to stop the fun and make 3D
tedious again.

Rescentment aside, I appreciate all your efforts on this list to try and help
us out Maurice. It goes to show that the people employed at Autodesk are not
always representative of the Autodesk corporate position - you guys are human
and oftentimes nice guys :)

Best regards
Morten Bartholdy
