There has been a new development concerning the Softimage-Wiki.
Autodesk will keep hosting it "as is" for the time being.
As it turns out, it is legally very complicated to transfer the usage rights
for the content to a "third-party"...

Thanks goes to Nicolas Leduc for trying and for convincing Autodesk to at least

Re: Wiki EOL soon

2016-09-13 Thread Patrick Neese
So...i had a thought a while back. Maurice may already be all over it,
but...

As far as I know they have not open sourced (not sure they can) the content
of the site and most websites have policies that at the very least grant
this permission to the site owner (Autodesk) concerning user submitted
content; if not actual ownership of submitted content. I believe the person
hosting will want and , Autodesk should send, a legal document giving the
person hosting it permission (in a limited and specific way) to use, copy,
store, distribute, modify, grant third parties the ability to
distribute/copy/etc on their behalf(their hosting and CDN), etc.. Both
Copyright and Trademark items will need to be outlined. Concerning
trademark at least hold the host harmless for improper Trademark usage as
it exists on the site currently, as this could violate their current posted
terms of usage. I'm certain not every instance of "Softimage" is "Autodesk
Softimage®". Autodesk's EULA for their sites doesn't allow these things
currently and should a trademark/copyright issue arise, from Autodesk or a
person who originally granted permission to Autodesk to use the content
they created, this paperwork will be needed. Not that and issue will occur,
but it could. This was my primary reason for not volunteering my webspace.

That's not good! I am thinking of setting up a totally new wiki for Softimage,
but I haven't got a clue, if the current content could easily be transferred to
such a new wiki. Maybe others can chime in. It probably would be best to host
the original wiki as a static archive and build a new one independently. It's
somewhat disappointing that no action has been undertaken by the community "at
large", as earlier posts in this thread seemed to indicate the wiki was
well-worth preserving... I myself have little experience in these matters, so
any help would be greatly welcomed...

RE: Wiki EOL soon

2016-08-22 Thread Sven Constable
As for the tutorial vids on YT and vimeo I started to grab them a few years
ago, when I was concerned about the diminishing of content on the web. May it
be wikis, forums or videos. Eg. Psyop had some very interesting and advanced
tech demos (vids and papers) about procedural UVing lagoa simulations. I also
grabbed all of the ICE and FaceRobot tutorials by AD. Oh, and not to forget the
brilliant ICE tutorials by Paul Smith.

I don't expect these gems to be available forever. Unlike the site by Ed
Harriss. That stuff apparently won't die :-)

(Thank you Ed, btw.)

So what you are say, Maurice, is because some people have been making
comments that you don't like, or are not constructive, you are going to get
upset and not make an effort to do the right thing?

You either want to do the right thing or you don't.

Your message had the same tone as a parent getting upset with children,
and then acting childish to get back at them.

Everyone is being a bit childish now, but none of the people you are upset with
started any of this.
It started with Autodesk killing Softimage, and continues with killing the wiki.

You didn't personally "do" any of that, but the company you work for did.
I may have missed it, but I did not see anyone personally insulting you
(and if they did, that was wrong). But your response was as if they did.

Which honestly, and with no malice intended, is not exactly helping the
situation either.

Right, that website produces only 0.1% traffic of all AD websites.
Therefore it has to be killed.

Or Autodesk is now part of a secret www group that has the ambition to remove
outdated websites. As, beside from that website, all other website (including
the first forum posts on the area) are brand new.

Re: Wiki EOL soon

2016-08-22 Thread Patrick Boucher
Hi Fabian (and others),

This message was brought to my attention and I’d like to let everyone know that
although I am now working for Shotgun and haven’t touched Softimage (or been in
production for that matter) in a few years…

*I have no plans to stop hosting SoftimageBlog.*

The site is privately hosted by myself on my own infrastructure and not
dependent on Autodesk in any way shape or form. You can count on it being there
as long as you’ll be using Softimage.

Thanks for the continued support throughout the years.

Cheers,
Patrick Boucher

locally, but the error message and 1,3 GB discrepancy (from the 3,7 GB Patrick

I hope Maurice and the dev team can find a way to let perhaps Matt host it

So you would like a showing of hands who still uses Softimage in production and
are to some degree reliant on having access to help such as the Wiki every now
and then.

One big hand here! To me this is very real.

And more reliant than ever since this list is getting smaller as people are
migrating to The Dark Side or other and better alternatives.

2016-08-19 Thread Maurice Patel
My problem is I cannot actually gauge whether this is really a serious issue or
not.
I know quite rightly that people are upset with the EOL of Softimage so I am
not sure if what is being expressed here is just a reference of that anger
(which I can do nothing about) or really related to the wiki being a useful
resource rather than an obsolete website no one visits. There is no point
trying to save an obsolete website hoping to fix anger at the EOL of Softimage
because it will not. Anyway I am still researching options including releasing
the data (if it can be done so in compliance with our privacy rules) to the
community– I do not know how feasible anything is.

Imagine all the young artists searching for a Maya issue and accidentally

RE: Wiki EOL soon

2016-08-19 Thread Schoenberger

Sorry that I made a joke about it. But This does not mean that this wiki is not
an important place in case you have an issue with
Softimage.

Let me explain:
>From the experience with Autodesk, the Softimage user are always confronted
>with a made decision. Made by people who have little or
no connection to Softimage and their user base. This time, it is "The Wiki will
be dead". Instead of reaching out and asking this
Softimage group if the wiki is still important and useful, an admins check the
traffic and decides this it is not important any
more.
The Wiki is not used for the every day job, it is used if we hit a wall and
need help. Therefore it does not produce that much
ammount of traffic.

As you have seen it is still important this and then. And with that in mind, we
(Autodesk and the users) could have found a way.
Instead it is another "Live with it" notice. And now, users think again they
are on their own and start downloading the website page
by page with tools.
And as I think that we can not influence anything at Autodesk regarding
Softimage, I prefer some gallows humor.

Some questions and more background:
Did the admin reach out to the Softimage departement to ask if the wiki can be
shut down?
I could not assume that an admin will remove a website without asking the
responsible departement, does he?
And the Softimage departement, did they know that the wiki means? If they do
not know, why don't they ask us? Because a dead
software does not require any websites? Another of these "Softimage is dead and
therefore " decisions that we have to struggle with
since years.

Softimage users have tried to influence Autodesk right from the beginning. When
Softimage was bought by Autodesk, many customers
have not continued their maintenence, because they did not know what will
happen. Will it be another app that gets killed like some
others have already been? Or will it continue and rise? They waited to see at
least some signs if Autodesk will support Softimage
and continue for exampple the road map for ICE. Instead we heard that AD build
up a new non-SI-experienced dev group in Singapore.

At that time Softimage users have tried to get in contact with Autodesk and
tried that Softimage will be seen as one of the 3 3D
applications at Autodesk. But we failed. All flyers had Maya and 3dsmax only.
The main AD website has not listed Softimage beside
3dsmax and Maya. And so on...

Sorry that we have lost faith that Autodesk will be doing something in the
interest of Softimage users.

I have had HTTrack running for approximately 6,5 hours after which it reported:

I have got 2,43 GB worth of Wiki now and upon brief inspection it works

I hope Maurice and the dev team can find a way to let perhaps Matt host it

Re: Wiki EOL soon

2016-08-19 Thread Morten Bartholdy
That is very generous of you Matt. I hope it will be possible.

Maurice, I understand your resentment/frustration over bitter remarks made
here, but try see it from our perspective. Again Autodesk is removing a tool
which is very valuable to a great number of os - low traffic or not. And it
seems it would do little to no harm to Autodesk to just keep that server
running or copy the Wiki to a new server, if yuo need to replace hardware or
set it up elsewhere.

We have known about Softimage EOL for some years now, but it has definately not
made me any more happy about Autodesks decision, and having started learning
Maya, I am beginning to grasp just how lucky I have been having chosen to use
Softimage instead, that is until you guys decided to stop the fun and make 3D
tedious again.

Rescentment aside, I appreciate all your efforts on this list to try and help
us out Maurice. It goes to show that the people employed at Autodesk are not
always representative of the Autodesk corporate position - you guys are human
and oftentimes nice guys :)

Best regards
Morten Bartholdy

I recently renewed my web hosting for 3 more years. I can host the

RE: Wiki EOL soon

2016-08-18 Thread Matt Lind
To be fair, Autodesk has demonstrated a consistent lack of forethought for
things concerning Softimage customers over the years. Instead of being
honest, they've been opaque. Instead of being pro-active and thinking in
terms of customer service like any good reputable company, the actions taken
have leaned more towards company's interests, and only responding to
customers when they complain. There's nothing wrong with discontinuing a
wiki, but the way it was handled was pretty much a hands-off non-customer
oriented fashion like everything else. Basically, Autodesk hasn't
demonstrated it has learned the lesson that keeps getting raised by
customers time after time. That's why the so called pot shots continue.

Much of the wiki's content should've been part of the user guides as primary
information that ships with the application. For example, details on how to
write operators in the C++ SDK. This is fairly important information for
developers, but there is exactly zero information in the SDK guides that
explain port connections and how they affect operator behavior and
interfacing with the application. The wiki is the only place that contains
such information. Why? Answer: the wiki was treated as a dumping ground
for information that didn't make the shipping deadline of a particular
release. What should've been done as regular practice is for someone to go
through that wiki after each release and flag articles to be folded into the
user guides for the next release or service pack, but that never happened.

As for the low wiki web traffic - I can say in all honesty I keep forgetting
the wiki even exists because it's not a main traffic area of the
application. I do believe the information in the wiki is very valuable to
users, but because it's on the sidelines out of view, it's always an
afterthought to consider. I often don't think of consulting the wiki until
I've already gone down a deep path of troubleshooting or trial and error
when trying something new. Then it's a 'duh' moment epiphany that reminds
me the wiki exists, so I go there, and sure enough some important bits of
information to resolve my issue are there. I'm sure many other customers
are in the same boat. It's not due to lack of interest, it's due to lack of
organization of information.

Rather than have all the customers try to simultaneously crawl the wiki and
try to download it. It would be much more practical if somebody from
Autodesk would package it up and localize all the links and content so it
can be downloaded and installed locally on one's computer much like the user
guides are made as downloaded local installs of HTML documentation.
Honestly, this should've been done at time of retirement, or at the very
least, when support officially ended a few months ago. If there are other
loose ends out there, I would suggest looking into doing the same for them.

OK, I am not getting much rational feedback here and if you are just picking
apart every word I say with inaccurate speculation it is hard for me to
gauge how serious the need is and whether it is actually worth any effort on
my part. From what I understand the server was maintained by a Softimage
dev, that person is now doing other things, the server will be replaced and
that will be the end and even by "Softimage" standards it has no traffic. As
far as I see this has turned into just another excuse to take pot shots at
Autodesk which while they may be fun is not convincing me that I really need
to do something about this.

Softimage itself when Autodesk bought it (the way they informed

Plus, one can't help but find the wording of the below notice as somewhat

availability but not all.
If you need anything it may be best to save a local copy to your machine before

Out of curiosity - as it is hardly taking any time for AD employees and hardly
any ressources compared to what else AD supports, why not just keep it running

You should be able to snag a copy of the site using wget and it will
probably be more functional than a backup since wget will convert all the
embedded page links etc.

I think the privacy issue can be overcome. Have a look in the link I
sent you under the section "Backup the content of the wiki (XML dump)".
That method doesn't include account information.

Hi Maurice,
Is it conceivable that Autodesk would be willing to backup the wiki according
to the instructions found here:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Backing_up_a_wiki

and then provide that data to an individual in the community to host on their
own publicly available server?

RE: Wiki EOL soon

2016-08-17 Thread Maurice Patel
I have asked if we can look into this and got a first response. Apparently it
is non-trivial as the site enabled users to create accounts and there are some
privacy issues around publishing the data as is. I can't promise anything but
we are looking into what is feasible.
