The fact that the only mentions I can find of the shader in the Maya docs are in conjunction with XGen might account for my own little tests that seem to indicate that the shader doesn't seem to do much in Softimage. mib_illum_hair_x?
I'm quite possibly looking in all the wrong places, but there seems to be a shader present in Softimage 2015 that doesn't seem to be documented, namely the mib_illum_hair_x hair shader (hiding in the basehair.dll), it's also present in Maya 2015, but documentation seems sparse there also. what I know of it is that is a hair shader based on the Marschner method, and seems to be experimental.
