[spectre] CALL FOR ENTRIES: DIGITAL LATIN AMERICA

2013-09-02 Diskussionsfäden ANDREA POLLI
CALL FOR ENTRIES: DIGITAL LATIN AMERICA
June 7 - August 30, 2014
?
APPLY AT: http://tiny.cc/DLAcall (you must first create a free account with
CaFE to apply to call)?

DESCRIPTION:?
516 ARTS presents Digital Latin America, an international exhibition with a
weekend symposium and Downtown Block Party. The project is an outgrowth of the
Latin American Forum for the award winning 18th International Symposium on
Electronic Arts (ISEA2012) produced by 516 ARTS last fall (www.isea2012.org).
Digital Latin America explores the North/South axis of cultural development and
exchange between South America, Central America and the Southwestern United
States, with a focus on New Mexico as the Northern tip of Latin America.

Connecting individuals, cultures, traditions and social histories to a rapidly
expanding global network remains not only a pressing challenge, but a profound
opportunity and necessity.  The utopian notion of closing the digital divide
represents a paradigm shift that encourages the participation of all
communities and cultures to express themselves through contemporary methods and
continue the complex terrain between global and local, virtual and real, and
political and private, in the creation of work that proposes alternative
understandings of technology, art and cultural exchange.

ABOUT THE CALL AND VENUES:?
This call for entries is for both gallery projects to be in the exhibition and
a variety of visual art, demonstrations and performance works for the Downtown
Block Party.

The exhibition will be based at 516 ARTS, a museum-style venue in the center of
Downtown Albuquerque, with off-site projects at The Albuquerque Museum of Art
History and possible other sites. It will highlight contemporary artists from
Latin America and the Southwestern United States, including New Mexico, and
will showcase high caliber, innovative, interactive artworks that are
accessible to the general public and presented in an educational context. The
exhibition will include digital media as well as work that addresses technology
through traditional mediums. The exhibition opens Saturday, June 7 and runs
through Saturday, August 30, 2014.

The Downtown Block Party is a one-day, outdoor event that will feature
artworks, demos, interactive projects, hands-on activities as well as music,
dance and food, all celebrating the cultures of Latin America and New Mexico.
The event will take place on Central Avenue between 5th and 6th Streets in
front of 516 ARTS in Downtown Albuquerque to allow for a wide range of projects
that include those intended for both daylight and darkness.

JURY
?The exhibition will be both juried and invitational. The juried work will be
selected by the project planning committee, which includes leading minds from
academic and cultural institutions in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia and Argentina as
well as New Mexico and the region.

ELIGIBILITY:?
The exhibition is open to emerging and established contemporary artists working
in all digital media formats or working with concepts that address digital
media in relation to Latin American culture.??Artists of Latin American, Native
American and Indigenous heritage are encouraged to apply, but the exhibition is
open to all cultural backgrounds and artists who reside anywhere in the world,
as long as their work proposes alternative understandings of technology, art
and cultural exchange.??Submissions for the exhibition may include work that
addresses technology through traditional mediums.??Submissions for the Downtown
Block Party may include performances (dance, theater, music), performance art,
interactive projects and demonstrations. Please note pieces submitted for the
Block Party will be temporary, to be featured only during the one day event.
Works that require daylight and/or darkness are eligible.??Artists must be 18
years or older.??Artists are encouraged to submit new works and/or
installations. Proposed artworks must have been created within the last four
years and must not have been previously shown in Albuquerque or the surrounding
region.??Completed artworks are not necessary to apply. Proposals for
unfinished work or work that does not yet exist will be considered if the
submission provides enough information.

[spectre] ARID: A Journal of Desert Art, Design and Ecology seeks submissions for Fall 2012 Launch Issue

2012-04-21 Diskussionsfäden ANDREA POLLI
ARID: A Journal of Desert Art, Design and Ecology is a peer-reviewed bi-annual
journal focusing on cross-disciplinary explorations of desert arts, design,
culture, and the environment for both scholarly and new audiences. ARID seeks
submissions of scholarly articles, curriculum, visual essays, and other media
including sound and video that investigate diverse aesthetic, social, cultural,
historical, ecological, and political subjects related to desert regions of the
American Southwest and beyond. ARID emphasizes the convergence of art, design,
and culture with science, ecology, geography, and other related disciplines to
create a unique snapshot of and dialog about desert environs and cultures with
a vested and active interest in the desert as a point of creative
investigation. ARID is an interdisciplinary online project jointly published by
multiple institutions launching in fall 2012.

ARID seeks written submissions from independent scholars, writers, researchers,
and journalists that showcase innovative, compelling, and intellectually
rigorous storytelling. We also encourage visual, film, and audio submissions
including photo essays, illustrations, cinema, soundscapes, music, and other
forms of cultural production.  We encourage both scholarly articles and papers
as well shorter, more informal essays.

Authors are encouraged to submit related art and photography with their written
pieces. Artists and photographers may submit stand-alone visual essays.
Articles and essays must be original and unpublished and not under
consideration by other journals at the time of submission. We will consider
previously published media works on a case-by-case basis.

Submissions will be accepted for our first issue beginning April 1st through
June 1st, 2012. For more information and media submission guidelines please
visit: www.aridjournal.org.

We will consider submissions for the following categories:

attempting to redefine an education in art, media, and design along
environmental and social practice lines. We are particularly interested in
field-based pedagogy with an emphasis on desert geographies.
Practices?Practices, projects, and ideas referencing art, design, media, and
other works related to ARID's mission.

Policies?A place for discussion of the frameworks, rules, regulations and other
structures that govern and legislate place, a vehicle to converse with our
co-inhabitants, and a means to link to other desert communities.

Perspectives? An ongoing archive of dialogues, fictions, and freeform ideas
concerning desert geographies from an array stakeholders, viewpoints, and
positions. This section includes book and exhibit reviews.

Submissions have just now opened for ISEA2012 Albuquerque: Machine Wilderness,
Re-envisioning Art,
Technology and Nature at http://www.isea2012.org/ - deadline October 1st

events exploring the discourse of global proportions on the subject of
art, technology and nature.

Proposals may include:

* Artworks/Performances

* Panels

* Workshops

* Papers

* Residencies/Site Projects

The ISEA2012 symposium will consist of a conference September 19 - 24, 2012
based in Albuquerque with outreach days along the state's Cultural Corridor
in Santa Fe and Taos, and an expansive, regional collaboration throughout the
fall of 2012, including art exhibitions, public events, performances and
educational activities. This project will bring together a wealth of leading
creative minds from around the globe, and engage the local community through
in-depth partnerships.

life on Earth. Machine Wilderness focuses on creative solutions for how
technology and the natural world can sustainably co-exist.

The program will include: a bilingual focus, an indigenous thread, and a focus
on land and skyscape. Because of our vast resource of land in New Mexico,

for artworks to extend into the sky as well.

The lead organizations hosting ISEA2012 are 516 ARTS, The University of New
Mexico and The Albuquerque Museum of Art History. There are a total over 50
partnering organizations to date representing museums, colleges, nonprofit arts
