[speedtouch] silver modem

2004-01-23 Thread acjt
Hi,
I have just got a silver modem and I'm unable to get it
working with Gentoo. I have read on this list there seems to
be issues with the firmware uploading (and I'd agree with this
happening on mine also).
I just wonder whether it is worth me keeping this modem, or
getting a different type?
Perhaps there is a fix for it already?

Thanks.
AJ.

As of yet, I haven't had the time to work on a fix, and I don't believe
anybody else has either.

I'm keeping my modem, I don't like to walk away from it.

The choice is yours.

This is the first time I have been able to get broadband, and
as you could imagine I'm busting to use it!! :)
I wish I was more technical so I could help, but I'm pretty
useless in hardware things.
How long does it usually take to get these types of things
fixed, not that I am pushing, just for information so I can
decide what to do (I only have 6 months use out of it). I
appreciate you do it when you can of course.
Thanks.

Hi, one day one of the developers will get one of these modems
and then all your problems will be solved... It will happen, but
it may take a while. Of course, you could try to fix it yourself.
Some work was already done towards fixing the firmware upload
problems - what happened with that?

Duncan.

[speedtouch] Re: Silver Rev 4.00 SpeedTouch 330 firmware - progress?

2004-01-23 Thread Duncan Sands

Hi Lewis,

Snooping the behaviour of the modem in windows, it would seem that it is
doing something very different in the 'run tests' phase, but omitting
the run tests phase from modem_run doesn't make the modem work. I would
stress, however, that I have very little experience with USB, and
interpreting the sniffed interactions, so I could be very, very wrong
 about this.

I don't think you should take the name run tests too seriously. Remember,
the whole thing was reverse engineered so we are just guessing as to what
that step does. I guess it is some kind of extra initialization.

At this point, I'm stuck, lacking the understanding of USB and the
internals of the speedtouch to identify and fix the problem.

Well, the thing to do is to log all the USB packets sent and received during
this phase under windows, and try sending the same stuff in that part of
modem_run.

My guess, however, is that the firmware for the 4.00 behaves differently
to the others in some way, rendering it incompatible with the linux
driver. Hopefully, the 'french' firmware will be compatible with the
4.00, but behave in a way the linux driver can understand.

A little bird tells me that the Thomson engineers may have a fix in the
works. But I wouldn't let that hold you back.

All the best,

Duncan.

If every owner of a silver speedtouch would mention
the town, where they're living in, a willing developer
in the neighbourhood could 'switch' modems for a while and
take a look at it..

Would that be a good idea?

Ok

I'm another new USB Silver Thomson SpeedTouch 330 modem owner with firmware
issues.
I'm currently running it on a Windows ME box but ideally want to run it on a
SUSE 8.2 linux router I have.

What can I do to help?
I have some programming skills and a bit of time to test stuff but don't
have much firmware knowledge. Perhaps someone could point me in the right
direction??

Yes, I can certainly write code, well, browse it even :P, but
firmware and hardware I'm pretty clueless, but willing to give
it a try. Even if I get a new modem for the time being, it
would be an interesting thing to play with and give me
something to do!
So, pointers to this sort of thing could be helpful.

[speedtouch] Speedtouch on Fedora Core 1 with 2.6 kernel

2004-01-23 Thread Miel H.

Dear all,

I've succesfully installed the kernel-model driver for the (red) Speedtouch USB modem
on a standard Fedora Core 1 installation using the HOWTO from Eric Brasseur (see
http://www.4p8.com/eric.brasseur/speedbundle_fedora.html). Next, I've upgraded my
kernel to 2.6 by using the HOWTO from Jorge Gallegos (see
http://www.fedoranews.org/jorge/howto/howto01.shtml). However, after rebooting into
the 2.6 kernel, the Speedtouch modem isn't working (as I more or less expected). What
are the required steps to get it to work? Should I redo the procedure as outlined by
Eric Brasseur (i.e. reinstall speedbundle)? Or is there another way of doing this. Any
help would be very much appreciated.

Regards,

Emiel.

Did you turn on support for the kernel module in your 2.6 kernel .config?

Ciao,

Duncan.
