Have you tried checking the routing? Maybe it hasn't updated your
default route.

[speedtouch] Dual line ADSL with Speedtouch 330

2006-08-23 Thread Andrew Meredith

Hi Folks,

I am having a problem getting a second Speedtouch 330 set up on my FC5
router/firewall. Up to press I have been using a pair of ADSL routers on
two ethernet cards, which has been working ok, but would like to
simplify the BoM and get more control over the WAN endpoints.

Getting one Speedtouch 330 up and running was no issue, but the second
one gets caught up with the first and in fact bings both lines down.

I suspect the issue is that both ISPs use VPI=0, VCI=38 and as this is
now presented in the same kernel, they are now clashing where they
wouldn't in two separate boxes. As I doubt that I can get either ISP to
change their settings, I suspect that this is game over for this
approach ... but would like confirmation from someone who knows more
about this stuff than I do.

In case it is important, I am using the kernel drivers and PPPoA on
Eclipse and PlusNET, with 8 IP addresses from each.

Hope someone can help

Andy M

There is some hope then !

Part of my due diligence was a poke around to see if I could specify a
connection number as well as VPI/VCI in order to nail everything
together. I was wondering if this was where the issue might break.

Excellent .. I don't suppose you know of any references I can use to
pick this up. My searches so far have not brought this out.

The ADSLs are both MaxDSL, so float around up to 8MB. The USBs are both
USB 2.

Tried various .. just in case.

ppp-2.4.3-6.2.1

I am not trying to do multilink as such. The two DSLs are from different
ISPs (deliberately .. redundancy) so there's no way I could bond them.

Sadly

I'm wondering if the pppoatm.so plugin would need another parameter for
this layout to work. There is nothing to tell the two pppd instances
which one has which modem. The suggestion from Matthew is that the
second pppd tries to connect into the kernel and, knowing no better,
crashes into the circuit set up by the first modem.

2006-08-23 Thread Andrew Meredith

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

The kernel does the firmware upload and line grabbing thing with no
problem, across both modems.

  kernel: ADSL line is up (4800 Kib/s down | 448 Kib/s up)
  kernel: ADSL line is up (3328 Kib/s down | 832 Kib/s up)

Then the scripting goes round and round and out pops:

/usr/sbin/pppd ipparam ppp0 linkname ppp0
plugin pppoatm.so 0.38
noipdefault noauth default-asyncmap defaultroute
hide-password nodetach mtu 1492 mru 1492 noaccomp
noccp nobsdcomp nodeflate nopcomp novj novjccomp user
[EMAIL PROTECTED] lcp-echo-interval 10 lcp-echo-failure 2

If this is fired off with only one modem connected (either one) then the
line comes up and all is well.

If both are connected:

pppd[14249]: Plugin pppoatm.so loaded.
pppd[14249]: PPPoATM plugin_init
pppd[14249]: PPPoATM setdevname_pppoatm - SUCCESS:0.38
pppd[14249]: pppd 2.4.2 started by root, uid 0
 >> pppd[14249]: connect(0.38): Address already in use
pppd[14249]: Exit.

This (>>) line seems to come from the connect call in pppoatm.so

 if (connect(fd, (struct sockaddr *) &pvcaddr,
 sizeof(struct sockaddr_atmpvc)))
 fatal("connect(%s): %m", devnam);

Digging futher into the code there is a third parameter, that is
currently set to zero, the itf. According to the Linux ATM API Spec "itf
is the number of the local interface (zero-based)".

As it stands the argument parser rejects arguments with 3 fields (eg
1.0.38).

I guess I need to cook up a patch to pppoatm that will take an optional
3rd argument, but first I will do a hardcoded variant that takes a 2
part field as normal, but sets the itf to 1.

I will post my progress to this list.

Thanks for the pointers everyone.

Sadly none.

I did cook up a patched version of pppoatm.so and edited it into ifcfg-ppp1.

I then dropped ppp0 and plugged in the second Speedtouch 330.

The existing ADSL connection emmediately dropped and the pair of them
seemed to then fight with each other, going up and down seemingly at
random. There were times when they both announced they were up, but they
didn't last long. I can tell the lines from each other because they have
radically different upload speeds.

I did try and run up both ppp0 & ppp1, but the lines were not up long
enough to get any meaningful results re the itf patch.

I guess at least part of this problem rests in the kernel code.

[speedtouch] To reset a hung Speedtouch 330 via cron job

2010-03-08 Thread Andrew Meredith

Hi There,

A question I have had for years and to which I have found no answer is
how do you reset the Speedtouch 330, without resorting to unplugging it
and plugging it back in again. I have now found a way of doing this and
have written a script to be run by cron that keeps the machine connected.

I have attached it below. I hope the commentary is sufficient to explain
what is going on. It is release as GPL. If you have any fixes or
improvements I would hope you would return them to me.

Cheers

Andy M
