Re: [Spits] dash cap

2014-07-20 Thread Berger Bob
Back in the 90's I installed one of the dash overlays. It was made from a
thicker material than what they are selling nowadays.
Mine still looks great and the only way anyone knows is iOS an overlay is that
it doesn't extend all the way back to the wood dash and if you feel under the
lip you can tell it's there.

I had received a dash overlay that came with a car that I bought but didn't
like the way it looked. It all depends on how much you want to take your
dash apart. I was doing a full restoration, so the car was in pieces and I
thought I would try this. I went to the trouble of carefully removing the
original cap from the metal dash top trying to salvage the foam underneath
the vinyl. I disconnected the entire dashboard from the top which requires
removing gauges and everything else that goes with it. I then cut off the
raised lip of the split or splits with a razor blade to make it as flat as
possible, filling in the split with body putty and sanding it down. Then I
used contact cement to glue just the edges under the cap close to the
windshield, wrapped it around to fit under the dash panel and glued it
there. I was able to form fit using a heat gun around the ash tray and the
raised area above the gauges but just glued the area around the ash tray to
keep the indentations on both sides of the ash tray. I don't believe that
I
used glue all over the entire dash top so the vinyl can flex a bit. I then
glued it back onto the metal dash top and bolted up the dashboard to it.
This was done at least four years ago and it still looks like day one. Back
in the 70's I did this to my tr4 dash top and it too still looks good after
all these years. They now have a full replacements for these dash tops but
I
am still too cheap to go that route. Hope this helps. Bob Krivenko

I did a dash cap about 10 years ago (before remanufactured originals were

cracked

 If I remember correctly,
I completely removed the dash pad, clued on the cap, and re-installed the
 pad.

Re: [Spits] Front Bumper

2012-05-22 Thread Berger Bob
The valances have a bracket that connects them to the frame with 4 bolts - 2
into the frame and 2 into the valance. Each of the bolt holes in the bracket
are slotted for lots of movement in every direction.

The corner of the valance closest to the wheel controls the location of the
ends of the bumper.

After you remove the bumper to check if it is flat but before you put it back
on is the time to adjust the valances.

1st step is to make sure you have good gaps between the hood and the body.
These get adjusted at the hood hinge bolts.

Next loosen all 4 of the bolts that hold the valance on - just loose enough
that you can move the valance but not floppy loose.

Then, with the hood closed, move the valances so that the seal along the top
is just touching the underside of the hood along the whole length. When happy
tighten the 4 bolts back up.

Reinstall the bumper.

I had to do this after poor assembly by a body shop.

 Thanks everyone. Good insights.

I'll remove the bumper and check for straightness. Visually (still on the

My concern about trying to lower the bonnet in the front is that it is
already touching the front valance on the passenger side. That valance
doesn't seem to have much/any adjustment in it. Perhaps I'll remove the
valance, lower the bonnet in the front and then see what it will take to
get
the valance back on and line up. I can always create some custom brackets
to get the valance to go back on right, but doing that would seem to
indicate I'm compensating for a misalignment or unobvious accident damage
 somewhere else.

As for frame damage, that was actually my first thought but I dismissed it
after looking closely at it. I couldn't see any obvious signs of bending
or
distortion. Does anyone have any measurements as reference that might tell
me if the frame is out of whack. I suspect the problems are a result of a
complete disassembly and then not being correctly reassembled rather than
 accident damage, but who knows.

Doug - This Spit came with the license plate frame, so I'm not sure where
to
get one. Although, I did have a previous Spit with one just like it so
they
may be available somewhere. . . Actually, I just checked ebay, but it's
 kinda spendy.

When I split mine I just found a matching o-ring that was break fluid

could get help. Then I just tightened the bolts back in as tight as I
could get. I think I took them apart with my normal 3/8 drive handle

Re: [Spits] Spitfire speaker - original location??

2010-07-27 Thread Berger Bob
The single speaker in the parcel shelf was mounted vertically in the
outside corner of the shelf. You may have an angle bracket mounted to
the sheet metal above where the shelf rail mounts. The speaker was
attached to a separate square piece of the same material the shelves
are made out of. I think the mounting board was bent at the end where
it attached to the fire wall with one of the same screws that hold up
the back of the shelf.

I don't have the speaker but I can take a picture and point out the
mounting points if you want me to.

[Spits] Stromberg Vacuum Ports - Follow-Up

2008-10-14 Thread Berger Bob
All,

The suggestions I recieved were that the port on the bottom of the
Stromberg should have vacuum at idle and that the retard unit would
be fine if disabled.

I took the air cleaner off this evening and here is what I found -
the port is indeed on the engine side of the butterfly valve and when
the car is idling I can feel suction on my finger when I hold it over
the port, the suction goes away when I ran the idle up.

I set the timing to 10deg BTDC but I haven't taken it out for a drive
yet.

I'm planning on butting a screw into the port on the carb to cap this
off.

a timing light and check the timing at idle and at 3000 rpms with and

show you if the retard is operating as it should.

The other question in my mind is why you would even want
vacuum retard, IMHO leaving it unplugged is the most sensible
 option.

I currently have this disconnected and the timing set to 10deg Before
TDC.

Thanks for your help.

Re: [Spits] Just what is a Spitire Ignition Reluctor?

Joe Dan,

This is a part that goes inside the late model distributor and works
with the Opus Electronic Ignition. This fits over the distributor
shaft and the little black bits fire off the electronic contacts.

The only reason I know this is that I just took my distributor apart
to install a NOS replacement Opus electronic ignition module. This
is what I bought:

I am assuming that this listing is significantly incomplete and
 needs to
also include a description of the rest of the after-market

 required to make it work.
