Something Raspberry Pi based (either 3b+ or 4). Cheap to buy, and very
cheap to run.

There are 'dedicated' solutions, like PiCorePlayer, or DIY, like
installing LMS on Raspbian.

The former is simplest -- just "install and go" -- but the latter
doesn't require more than novice Linux skills + enthusiasm (I know,
because even I managed to do it).

Also, using a 'full' OS (eg, Raspbian, rather than a dedicated solution)
gives you more flexibility -- eg, for using the Pi as a more general
file server, if that's something you might want.

Basically, whatever you want to do, there's almost certainly a way of
doing it with a Pi -- and there's a terrific community here who will
give you all the help you need to do it.

If you're looking at a dedicated LMS server I'd think the PiCorePlayer
with LMS installed is what you're looking for. I think a Raspberry Pi
3B+ or 4B would do the job. If you want it to also be a player you would
probably want a daughter board with your choice of output, analog or
digital or you could go the USB DAC route.
https://www.picoreplayer.org/main_getting_started.shtml
Several threads in the Linux section on different versions of
PiCorePlayer
https://forums.slimdevices.com/forumdisplay.php?3-Linux-Unix
I built just a player using a Pi 3B and a HifiBerry DAC without LMS and
it was very easy.
You could also look at Max2Play
https://www.max2play.com/en/

Main system - Rock Solid with LMS 7.9.1 Official on WHS 2011 - 2 Duets
and Squeeseslave
Cabin system - Rock solid with LMS 7.9.1 Official on Win10 Pro - 1 RPi 3
Model B/Hifiberry DAC+ Pro/PiCorePlayer and Squeezeslave
Headphones and car - Android phone/Bluetooth w/full library on MicroSD
card - PowerAmp music player app (similar to Material Skin)

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Eco Friendly LMS Survey

2019-12-13 Thread noexit

I'm being warned by Microsoft now that my Windows 7 PC that I run LMS on
will soon be extinct as far as support goes. Since this PC is on all
the time, perhaps I could save some money on monthly household electrons
by migrating to more "environmentally friendly" hardware that doesn't
have a 400w-500w power supply.

To the Community: What would be your vote on the best hardware platform
to effectively run LMS on that I could leave on indefinitely and keep a
low power consumption footie-print?

As an aside, my Linux skills are weak but slowly developing. I'm going
to, in the interim before migrating hardware, install LUbuntu on the old
PC and reinstall LMS just to see if I can. I have a backup LMS on
another Windows box to keep the tunes rolling while I work.

All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Michael

"Squeezelite version is non R2, assuming is compliant. See players." is
just an INFO message, because a non R2 version will not understand the
actual sample rate of a pcm stream anfd play a loud white noise. That
means you could use the Ralphy version, but need to use -W in command
line.

Other than this, C-3PO was made when the Ralphy version had no DSD
support in it.

"Unable to run C-3PO transcoder, fault back to PERL. See server log."

means the executable (C-3PO) is not working for some reason (probably it
miss the X capability), the C-3PO.pl is used instead, nothing more.

In general, I wrote to Micheel to know if is there any opportunity to
point to GitHub (or elsewhere) and not to my server for the repo, too
bad my provider went default and I'm currently struggling with
bureaucracy to have my domain back, if someone is willing to host it,
feel free.

R2 is a version of squeezelite built on top of the last one made by
triode, back at the days there where no one maintaining it.

What R2 added was:

1. capability to look at the Wav header, so it could receive upsampled
PCM content. The same patch was adopted by Daèhile first and then Ralphy
(-W)
2. includes the DSD playbach patch from Daphile.
3. forget the 'length' in header to solve the problem with long tracks.

I sent all of them to Ralphy, I believe 2 is implemented in a slightly
different manner, I don't know nothing about 3.

There is no reason to use R2 today, if not that is 'lighter', missing
all the other was added to squeezelite.

Thanks, Roland. I'm going to try to do the latter today. Of course, as
is to be expected for Arch Linux, I'll have to spend some time studying
the documentation on how it handles logs first.

If it comes to that I'll create a new SD and try to boot, but I'm almost
sure it's a configuration problem. I've learned that the Wandboard has a
bug that prevents it from properly recognizing an HDMI monitor.
Meanwhile I'm waiting in a USB-to-serial cable so I can try to boot via
TTY.

I'll keep you posted. I owe this forum a full description of how I
(almost? maybe?) created a small NAS that will run LMS.

Cheers,
Les
