For a couple of years now I too have been running my LMS on a RasPi 2
server- and been very happy with it. However, I often felt that it was
right at its limit, especially with high bit rate files. I also found
the slow Ethernet links frustrating when transferring large music files
or making full backups.

I recently resurrected a Tranquil PC BBS server unit (Intel atom cpu,
4GB RAM, gigabit ethernet) which, years earlier had, not very
successfully, used WHS 2011 to stream both music and video. With the
very basic Linux know how I've built up by fiddling with the RasPis, I
took the plunge and installed Ubuntu x64 server on SSD and a 4TB
internal HDD for the flac files. I'm using Webmin along with SSH to
administer it. This is now exclusively for my music streaming and I must
say I'm more than happy with to result so far. Scanning or synchronising
a large music collection is so much faster on the Linux based file
systems compared to when the same hardware ran WHS 2011 and NTFS, and
the atom cpu makes the server run more like a little BMW to the
Raspberry Pi's Morris Minor (for those old enough to remember them!).

Perhaps this will encourage you to take the plunge too. I don't think
you'll regret it.

Thanks for that - I did go ahead and install Daphile on mine, but I
didn't really get on with Daphile, which decided it could't find my
music files after a few days of playing them happily. I've gone back to
my Raspberry Pi LMS for now, but I think I'll rebuild my intel box into
a Linux based NAS and run LMS on it - probably use ubuntu, as I'm
reasonably familiar with it...

Hi jemhayward
I have nearly the same machine for my main LMS server with following
exceptions
- 32GB SSD for the OS and LMS Server (just to be "green" compliant)
- Internal 3TB HDD for my music collection (+ external for backup)
But I'm using UBUNTU server (64 bit) and not Windows
I don't see any advantage to have a better computer for LMS even when
music need to be down-sampled (I have many 192 & 384kHz FLAC files and
my Touch and my DAC are limited to 96kHz)

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Intel Atom 1.6GHz 2GB RAM - Linux LMS build?

2017-01-17 Thread Michael Herger

My music collection is about 500GB and it is unlikely to grow much as I
use Tidal for half my listening now, so I was wondering about fitting a
1TB SSD instead of the small HDD and this would also make the box silent
as it is already fanless.

Sounds like a great plan.

Does LMS allow the collection to be split over different discs? I
think it does but I've never tried it...

Yes, you can define multiple music folders.

Also, any opinions about using a standard distro like Ubuntu and
installing LMS on that vs a specific system like Daphile?

I don't, as I've never used one of the specialized distributions. One
issue you're likely not to face with them, but likely to face with
Ubuntu is the latter's desire to always run bleeding edge code. Eg. the
next update might come with a different Perl version, breaking
compatibility with LMS etc. That's unlikely to happen with
Daphile/Vortexbox etc.

Hi,

Intel Celeron M CPU 420 1.60GHz with Debian stretch/sid 2 GB Ram, 1 TB
WD Black as boot & music disk.

runs fine - could be faster but i did have any issues playing tracks or
searching them.

I'm running my main system on this kind of platform on a CentOS based
linux (SME Server). Make sure you pull the database memory option to the
max (Settings/Advanced/Performance).

The big difference to my system: the 150GB disk might be rather slow,
compared to a recent 1 or 2 TB disk. This _could_ be a bottle neck
scanning the system.

Should work fine. I'd go with Daphile; seems more up to date. I used an
Atom running Win XP as an LMS server for many years.

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Intel Atom 1.6GHz 2GB RAM - Linux LMS build?

2017-01-17 Thread jemhayward

I have an old Acer mini PC that is presently running windows 7 and was
my LMS server for a time. I Don't need it for any of its other duties,
so was thinking of turning it into a pure LMS server, and maybe using
Linux, or an off the shelf build like Vortexbox or Daphile.
The machine has an Intel Atom processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 150GB HDD
(not SSD) - I have an external USB HDD which is 1.5TB that has my local
music collection on it.

Anyone got experience to share?
