Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Software Updates - time to revisit?
Ah, sorry. macOS like you. I never have any idea when the LMS update dialog will pop-up indicating a download is ready to be installed. This morning, the web interface said there was an update available, I checked via Check for Updates, and yes, there is an update. Hours later, no update dialog has appeared. It'll only check every 24h. That can be many hours later. Please understand that this is totally good enough for the regular user. But sure, if you want to have the latest and greatest build at all times, then that mechanism is too slow. Improving the update mechanism admittedly is low on my priority list. In particular on macOS we're likely facing bigger issues, like eg. Apple Silicon support... Any help would greatly be appreciated! ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Software Updates - time to revisit?
I run on Windows. What I don't like is my LMS runs on a headless Windows Server. My UI is through Material and it notifies me when there's an update available. This is fine for plugin updates as I can do that all through the UI. When it's an LMS update I must RDP into my server to accomplish the update. I realize there's probably no way around the UAC dialog, but... If there was a way to do the update from the UI it would be much nicer. It would also be sweet if the install had the option to not place an icon on the desktop as I always delete it. Currently, when you Check for Updates, or if an update is "available" (you see the message in the web interface), the links take you to an info page, and then offer to take you to an a page with even more info. This depends on the system you're running LMS on. Each has its own quirks... [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Software Updates - time to revisit?
Maybe it's time to revisit Check for Updates, making it more immediate, actionable, and helpful. Currently, when you Check for Updates, or if an update is "available" (you see the message in the web interface), the links take you to an info page, and then offer to take you to an a page with even more info. But you can't do anything from there. From a user's perspective when you Check for Updates, nothing happens, and it's unclear what should happen, or what is happening in the background. It's a tease. If I recall correctly, LMS will download the software eventually, and offer to install. The problem is, that might be tomorrow, or the next day, when yet another update is available, and the non-deterministic waiting repeats. Maybe this very lazy download made sense 10 years ago. But today, the 40-50Mb is trivial, and there should be an Update Now button that starts the process for users. I'm using LMS 8.2 nightly, and so go manually download the update anyway. I have no idea if LMS had already downloaded it, often it has, and so the downloads are doubled, and sometimes the installation requires two runs. Any possibility that entire procedure can be advanced to modern practices?
