I changed from using a supported ReadyNAS to using a Pi with a hard drive storage plugged into it, but could just as easily have used the ReadyNAS as the storage. There is a FreeBSD LMS port which can used, or you'd have to build LMS yourself. I saw that but I hoped things might have moved on with an official plug-in. I'm not sure what is involved in creating a plug-in. Your easiest "plug-in" might be a Raspberry Pi 3B+ with piCorePlayer...
