For Tomcat plugin, you can check the documentation on the gived link.
For EasyStruts, documentation will be available soon ;)

If I use Eclipse, do I have to use the plug-ins (Tomcat ...etc)? Is there a guide on

Thanks

Under eclipse you can get the plugins :

- EasyStruts : http://sourceforge.net/projects/easystruts/ (in developpement)
- Struts Console : soon...

Under JBuilder :

Re: Please recommend a IDE

2002-06-05 Thread Nicolas De Loof

I use WSAD,

it has some prety functionalities, but need a well powered PC (I've got a
P3-500/256Mo and it goes very sloow !). My opinion is it is a too heavy
environment for current PCs generation. You will need 512Mo as WSAD process
uses 150Mo for itself...

I used to make my development with a simple java/xml/text editor (ultraedit)
and JDK command line javac, test it on tomcat (that reloads application on
JPS/class changes), and then import into WSAD for CVS support. So I can open
a JSP without waiting 30 seconds for JSP validation and so on. It's also a
good way to get used to write well formed code without editor help (but not
bug free !).

I tried just one time WSAD included tomcat test environment and got time to
go drink a coffee. On the other side, standalone tomcat does not provide
debugger, profiling tools...

I don't know about Eclipse perfs, or WSAD usage on recent PCs.

Is another list. Netbeans is free and a lot like the next line:
I did not like JBuilder and Oracle and Eclipse and Visual Cafe, to big.

I like http://www.omnicore.com/htmls/codeguide.html.
But Text editors are ok as well, like TextPad, and GVIM (GUI VI for
X-Windows).
But the tool will make little difference. You should know more than one
IDE. It is how you use it. Also, I unit test each layer by itself and
hence do not used debug tracing.

RE: Please recommend a IDE

2002-06-05 Thread Bartley, Chris P

If you haven't already, you owe it to yourself to check out IntelliJ IDEA.
It doesn't have Tomcat integrated like i hear Forte does (which, if you ask
me, is a *good* thing not to have), but it's hands down the best application
i've ever used.

It's helped make me a better programmer, and produce code much faster than
with any other tool I've tried. Check it out at:

   http://www.intellij.com/idea/

Here's a features list:

   http://www.intellij.com/idea/overview.jsp

You can get a free evaluation license for the production release (2.6), or
join their Early Access Program (also free) and get the latest development
build (code name Ariadna) at http://www.intellij.com/eap/. If you do join
the EAP, don't miss the What is the Ariadna project? link for a list of
completed and planned new features--it's amazing.

Enjoy.

Is another list. Netbeans is free and a lot like the next line:
I did not like JBuilder and Oracle and Eclipse and Visual Cafe, to big.

I like http://www.omnicore.com/htmls/codeguide.html.
But Text editors are ok as well, like TextPad, and GVIM (GUI VI for
X-Windows).
But the tool will make little difference. You should know more than one
IDE. It is how you use it. Also, I unit test each layer by itself and
hence do not used debug tracing.

you should also check out the new version on their eap process. Does a whole lot more than Pandora (2.5), including tag support and code completion in JSPs etc - all you need to do is register at http://www.intellij.com/eap and download the latest build.

RE: Please recommend a IDE

Well, it currently runs on 1.3, but you can target 1.4 for compilation. And
they say that with their next build (630), IDEA will *require* jdk 1.4 to
run, but you'll of course still be able to target older jdk versions.

This isn't strictly true. The current release runs on 1.3 but supports any
JDK as a target for compilation. Therefore it doesn't really matter what it
runs on. The latest EAP build now runs on 1.4 and in the near future all eap
builds will only run on 1.4

Checkout OptimalJ from Compuware.
http://www.compuware.com/products/optimalj or
http://javacentral.compuware.com

It is the only tool to implement OMG's MDA. It
utilizes NetBeans as the IDE. It has JoNas integrated
to allow complete unit testing at the desktop, the
ability to assemble and deploy on WebLogic, WebSphere,
and iPlanet quickly. The biggest plus is that the
tools is pattern driven, and I do not mean code
templates, with the ability to create your own
implementations of patterns.

My 2 cents...mb

RE: Please recommend a IDE

2002-06-05 Thread Joseph Barefoot

I think Rick is correct about your choice of IDE depending on your system.
If you have the resources, I emphatically support Netbeans. It is
feature-rich, with many optional modules available via an automatic update
center, and many more unsupported ones out on the net that you can install
manually. OptimalJ plugs in to it, as does refactorIT
(http://www.refactorit.com/). You can get CVS support, code completing for
.java or .jsp files, remote debugging, Ant support, JUnit code skeleton
generators, and tons of other stuff. Some guy actually wrote a plug-in for
it to allow you to control your music software (WinAmp on Windows and
another program for Linux, can't remember which) from within Netbeans
(useless for development, but amusing).

Netbeans projects are filesystem-oriented vs. project/class oriented IDEs
like Eclipse. It's also open source and infinitely configurable. It is,
however, a memory hog, and I wouldn't recommend using it unless you have
100MB or more of free memory to dedicate to it. Have fun.

 I vote for JEdit http://www.jedit.org/

and also I'm finding GEL pretty nice on a windows platform:
 http://www.gexperts.com/

Both of the above editors are free and they do all that I need
(JEdit is more customizable with the plugins).

I like NetBeans also but don't need all the bloat it comes with on
a day to day basis. If you need an advanced editor that has code
insight (you know method completion after the '.') then go with
one of the lighter weight editors above vs using one of the big
boys. With JEdit you can choose what you want to add .. need
debugging..add the plugin. etc. Of course if you have a 2GHZ
processor and over 550MB of RAM I guess it doesn't matter too much
what you choose. Play around. It's a nice work diversion trying
 out new editors:)

 Hi,
I think running Struts application in Eclipse IDE is more easy than JBuilder IDE (due
tomcat classpath).

Under eclipse you can get the plugins :

- Tomcat : http://www.sysdeo.com/eclipse/tomcatPlugin.html
- EasyStruts : http://sourceforge.net/projects/easystruts/ (in developpement)
- Struts Console : soon...

Under JBuilder :
- Struts Console : http://www.jamesholmes.com/struts/
- Struts Wizard : http://www.mycgiserver.com/~eboudrant/#wizard
- Struts support : Make a search in http://codecentral.borland.com or see tutorial in
http://www.netstore.ch/mesi/strutsTutorial/
