I went through Nikhil's weekly blogs, also viewed some of his pull requests
and tried to understand the changes.
Seems like Nikhil is doing a great job. :-)

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2019 - Learn about another project

2019-07-01 Thread Rahul Bothra
G'day,

We've completed the first set of evaluations for all GSoC projects. Since
the students have made significant contributions now, we are trying a new
activity to increase community engagement.

Each student should understand about a different student's project, and
accordingly, will be explaining his project to a third student. Here's the
list of projects every student should understand,

Nikhil Mehra - Create a Sugar Dashboard
Hrishi Patel - Performance in Music Blocks
Favour Kelvin - Create write activity for Sugarizer
Ashish Aggarwal - Improve and Maintain 25 sugar activities
Swarup N - Expand Sugarizer's Excerciser Activity
Avinash Agarwal - Reconciling rhythm with pitch in Music Blocks widgets
Sparsh Agarwal - Port to Python 3
Aniket Mathur - Improve Sugarizer Server Dashboard

To understand a project, you may talk to the student, it's mentors, or ask
questions on @sugar-devel.

Your responsibilities include;
 - Understand the goals of the project and how is the student accomplishing
them
 - Test the work done in the project
 - Explain your project to the student to which it is assigned

For any questions or feedback, feel free to reach out to the Org Admins

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSoC 2019 - Welcome to Sugar Labs

2019-05-17 Thread Rahul Bothra
We'll have our first group meeting for all GSoC students on,
Monday, 20/05/19, 4:30 PM UTC, 10 PM IST.

The meeting will be a place for you to update the community of your
progress, as well as a peak into other GSoC projects. This post from
James summarizes how you can keep logs and use them in the meeting,
http://lists.sugarlabs.org/archive/sugar-devel/2019-May/056835.html

All the GSoC students are expected to be present for the meeting.
We're excited to hear about your projects and the work that you've
done already.

It'll be great if mentors and interested community members also join in,
if the timings are convenient.

Thank you, James.
I got a clarification from your reply. I don't think that a meeting is
required now. I will surely ask for a meeting if I am stuck anywhere. ;-)

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSoC 2019 - Welcome to Sugar Labs

2019-05-16 Thread James Cameron
Thanks for asking.

I've removed CCs, as these people are all on sugar-devel@, and replies
do trigger limit on addressee count reported by Mailman software.

I don't think a meeting is needed, but I can attend one if you call
it. Please choose a time that both Rahul and I can be available.

What to do and how to start is summarised by our GitHub project "Port
to Python 3 via Six";

https://github.com/orgs/sugarlabs/projects/1

It is a big job, but completing any part of it brings the finish
closer. Rahul did good work on it last year.

Each step will bring new errors and seemingly impossible problems that
have to be solved. We don't necessarily have the solutions until we
can consider the problems in detail. It isn't a class exercise. ;-)

In general the sequence is;

- port, test, and package the toolkit,
  https://github.com/sugarlabs/sugar-toolkit-gtk3
  https://github.com/sugarlabs/sugar-toolkit-gtk3/issues/382

- port, test, and bundle the Hello World sample activity,

- port, test, and bundle all the other activities in the core set,

- port, test, and package the shell,
  https://github.com/sugarlabs/sugar
  https://github.com/sugarlabs/sugar/issues/787

- port, test, and package any dependencies,
(Xapian has been mentioned by our Fedora people),

- port, test, and package the datastore,
  https://github.com/sugarlabs/sugar-datastore
  https://github.com/sugarlabs/sugar-datastore/issues/7

- port, test, and release any of our own dependencies used by
activities, such as collabwrapper, or gwebsockets,
  https://github.com/sugarlabs/collabwrapper/issues/11

- port from Telepathy to TelepathyGLib,
  https://github.com/orgs/sugarlabs/projects/4

- port, test, and bundle as many non-core activities as we can.

Do ask questions to clarify, but with changed subject line. I suggest
a subject prefix of "Port to Python 3".

I've checked; all students and assigned mentors are subscribed to this
mailing list now.

Posts can avoid large recipient lists, and thereby avoid moderation
delay.

For messages that are directed to a specific person, yet are public,
please continue to add them as recipient in addition to the mailing
list.

e.g. a public question to me you would send like this;

To: qu...@laptop.org, sugar-devel@lists.sugarlabs.org

If you have any questions about how to use the mailing list, please
ask.

There is no preference for writing blogs. You may use any platform which
doesn't require authentication for viewing posts.

 Greetings everyone,

Congratulations to the 9 students selected for GSoC 2019 with Sugar
 Labs. We
hope that you are as excited as we are. We had some great proposals to
 go
through and yours' really stood out.

Here are a few things to get you onboard,
 1. Please subscribe to sugar-devel if you haven't already,
 See http://lists.sugarlabs.org/listinfo/sugar-devel

 2. Contact your project mentors to get started. Decide a weekly meeting
 time
which suits you and your mentors. Regular communication is an integral
 part of
working on a project of this scale.
It can be tempting to communicate in private, but please use public
 forums like
#sugar, #sugar-meeting, or @sugar-devel while communicating, so that
 other
community members can also join in.

 3. You are required to write weekly blog posts about your GSoC
 progress. You
can start off by setting a blog up if you haven't already. Reply to
 this thread with
 the link to your blog.

 4. We'll be having a weekly group meeting on #sugar-meeting, where all
mentors and students will discuss their progress. Since we have people
 from
Australia, France, India, Nigeria, and the US (pardon me if I've missed
 anyone),
it'll be difficult to find a time suitable for everyone. Reply to this
 thread with your
preference of time. Here are a few suggested options,
 * Monday 4:30 PM UTC / 10:00 PM IST
 * Monday 6:30 PM UTC / 12:00 PM IST

 5. If you have any issues with your mentor, or otherwise during the GSoC
project, please feel free to get in touch with the GSoC Org Admins.
 They are
James , Rahul , and Walter
 .

 Welcome to Sugar Labs.
Looking forward to a productive summer with you guys

2019-05-07 Thread James Cameron
Good point. Any new assisting mentors should introduce themselves to the
students now, and CC sugar-devel@. Be sure to mention your skills, special
focus, and experience with Sugar Labs.

This is also a reminder to the coding mentors and students that as much as
possible of what you say and do together should be in public, so that the
assisting mentors and others in our community can be involved.

 Greetings mentors and fellow students,

 I have created a github.io blog at
https://github.com/nswarup14/nswarup14.github.io. It is empty at the
moment. However I plan to customise it soon and start adding content
 regularly.
Regarding the weekly meet timings, I am alright with either of the
above mentioned options, and willing to discuss it further, in case people
 have other preferences as well.

I thank my mentors and the rest of the Sugar community for selecting me
as a GSoC student. I am excited to begin and am looking forward to
interacting with all of you over the next few months.

 Regards,

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2019 - Welcome to Sugar Labs

2019-05-06 Thread Rahul Bothra
Greetings everyone,

Congratulations to the 9 students selected for GSoC 2019 with Sugar Labs. We
hope that you are as excited as we are. We had some great proposals to go
through and yours' really stood out.

Here are a few things to get you onboard,
1. Please subscribe to sugar-devel if you haven't already,
See http://lists.sugarlabs.org/listinfo/sugar-devel

2. Contact your project mentors to get started. Decide a weekly meeting time
which suits you and your mentors. Regular communication is an integral part
of
working on a project of this scale.
It can be tempting to communicate in private, but please use public forums
like
#sugar, #sugar-meeting, or @sugar-devel while communicating, so that other
community members can also join in.

3. You are required to write weekly blog posts about your GSoC progress. You
can start off by setting a blog up if you haven't already. Reply to this
thread with
the link to your blog.

4. We'll be having a weekly group meeting on #sugar-meeting, where all
mentors and students will discuss their progress. Since we have people from
Australia, France, India, Nigeria, and the US (pardon me if I've missed
anyone),
it'll be difficult to find a time suitable for everyone. Reply to this
thread with your
preference of time. Here are a few suggested options,
* Monday 4:30 PM UTC / 10:00 PM IST
* Monday 6:30 PM UTC / 12:00 PM IST

5. If you have any issues with your mentor, or otherwise during the GSoC
project, please feel free to get in touch with the GSoC Org Admins. They are
James , Rahul , and Walter
.

Welcome to Sugar Labs.
Looking forward to a productive summer with you guys

"What Makes a Good Mentor?" "already part of the developer community".
https://google.github.io/gsocguides/mentor/what-makes-a-good-mentor.html

So if you're not doing the work of a developer now at Sugar Labs, you
are not a good mentor.

--

"Mentors should expect about 4-5 hours a week for each student"
https://google.github.io/gsocguides/mentor/notes-for-first-year-organizations.html

"Google expect they would be willing to mentor students for 5 hours a
week for the next 4 months"
https://google.github.io/gsocguides/mentor/defining-a-project-ideas-list.html

So I'm only in favour of the mentors whom I've seen spending at least
five hours a week on Sugar Labs. I don't mind having some backup
mentors, but they wouldn't be the best backup we could have.

--

"It is important as a mentor that you are cognizant of the basic skill
set required for the project."
https://google.github.io/gsocguides/mentor/selecting-a-student.html

"During the coding phase the student will be implementing the
project. The mentor will be providing advice not just on the technical
aspects of development, but on issues related to the interaction of
the student’s work with the organization. "
https://google.github.io/gsocguides/mentor/the-quick-guide.html

So I'm only in favour of mentors who can do the same work the student
is being asked to do. I don't mind having some backup mentors who
can't do the same work, but they wouldn't be the best backup we could
have.

--

"Look critically at mentor volunteers. Wanting the job is not a
sufficient qualification. The mentor should be well-known to the
community, and known to be someone reasonable and collegial. The best
technical person is not necessarily the best mentor; look for teaching
and…well..mentoring skills."
https://google.github.io/gsocguides/mentor/selecting-students-and-mentors.html

So I'm only in favour of people who are well-known to the developer
community, are reasonable and collegial, and can teach. I don't mind
having some backup mentors who can't do this.

--

"a mentor acts as an ambassador to help student contributors integrate
into their project’s community."
https://google.github.io/gsocguides/mentor/index#program-structure

So I'm in favour of engaging the other skilled people in our community
using the mentor as channel. Mentors are to come and find you, even
if you aren't listed as a mentor. This worked for me as a non-mentor
last year.

--

"At the end of the day, the org admin is responsible for the student
and mentor selection decisions. If your org doesn’t give you full veto
power, or gives you grief about executive decisions, consider stepping
down. Sometimes somebody has to make the final decision."
https://google.github.io/gsocguides/mentor/selecting-students-and-mentors.html

So the decision is up to Rahul and Walter. I'm fine with that. When
they don't agree, they'll have to compromise.

Stepping down as an organisation administrator or mentor is always an
option, and best done before we get underway.

(By the way, the oversight board did not select our co-administrators,
they selected themselves, and I think that's great. Be nice to them.)

--

This thread can damage our engagement with students, as it highlights
our failure to communicate and collaborate.

This thread can damage our reputation with the Google Open Source
Program Office.

It is, at heart, a mentor-mentor conflict. Google has something to
say about that too;

https://google.github.io/gsocguides/mentor/managing-your-mentors.html#sorting-out-conflicts

As the representative "non-coder" contributor to SL project Music
Blocks, of course I think that software development gains a lot from
various skill-sets.

In terms of policy, I agree that for mentorship we should not have a
limit.

I really appreciate having been let on board for GSoC my first year
without having to have studied coding before. This being said, I have
learned some basic coding-concepts along the way, which is fun too.

2019-04-07 Thread Jaskirat Singh
Hi,

Thanks for your opinion. We have been participating since last 9 years, I
guess in GSOC and other related programs and Walter has been doing great
job controlling the projects, students and mentors.
I think this Google also don't segregate about "Coding Mentors" and
"Assistant Mentors" what we have done. I agree with walter that every
project has different aspects and need various role people like Designer,
Tester, Coder, etc.
If google doesn't do then I think we too should not imply these thing,
that's embarrassing for the people who don't code but are doing great job
by putting their efforts in various other fields like testing, designing.
And if you think that Sugarlabs has suppose 10 projects and 2-3 people can
handle all those projects by mentoring then I think they should be good to
go and 2-3 people can mentor all projects why other volunteers needed.
("for which google does allows only 1 project per mentor")

I don't know in what way we are trying to shape the things. Community has
changed from last year GSOC Hope to see community getting back to the
previous roles.

Thanks

We need to do lot more stuff than we already are engaged with, and for that

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2019: Create a new set of activities

2019-04-07 Thread Suryansh Srivastava
Hey
I am Suryansh Srivastava, a second year Computer Science undergraduate, at
International Institute of Information technology, Hyderabad, (A reputed
research oriented computer science institute in India). I was interested in
being a part of sugarlabs developing and adding a new set of activity to
the sugarlabs for GSoC 2019.

I propose the following ideas for the same:

   - machine learning (in reference to
   https://github.com/sugarlabs/GSoC/issues/16), something which i self
learned, after learning prerequisites from relevant courses, last semester.
   - Quantum Computing and Information theory (With introduction to quantum
mechanics): Something which I will be taking up as my research project and
has been reading up on this semester through interactive resources which I
   can duplicate.

   - Bioinformatics: i have implemented various python scripts (and C )
related to bioinformatics and DNA and protein (PDB files) in my second
semester as a part of an Intro to biology course.

I have studied the codebase of sugarlabs and can make a new activity with
the help of proper guidance.
I request you to take a look at the proposed ideas and get back to me about
which ones I should be submitting a proposal on.

no argument with the list Lionel shared, although while comprehensive
regarding administrative details, it is pretty short on the actually
mentoring. And maybe our disagreement lies in the distinction between

benefit from input from a variety of perspectives: coding, design, UX,

2019-04-05 Thread Apoorv Jain
Dear Sir/Ma'am,

I am Apoorv Jain, a final-year undergraduate student of Computer Science &
Engineering from Bharati Vidyapeeth's College of Engineering. I have
knowledge & experience of working on various python modules such as OpenCV,
Scikit-learn, Scipy, NumPy, MatPlotlib, Pandas, Chatterbot, Flask, NLTK
and, scrapy etc. Along with it in the domain of deep learning, I have
experience of working on Keras, Tenserflow and great experience with
transfer learning as well. I even worked on several Image processing
projects out of my curriculum.

I am interested in contributing to the Sugar Labs as it has some really
great projects to work upon and also they align with my experience. I am
mainly interested in "Port Sugar and core activities to Python 3" as I have
done the importing of opendr library from Python 2 to 3 and "Improve and

We don't have many use cases in elementary school for Machine

I'd suggest you to go ahead whatever you feel is the best. You're free

Hi Ketki,

For the heatmap, you can use various colors to show different information
as stated in the project idea - last activity worked on, last project
opened -, you can also add colors for
most used activity, least used activity and other info you can think of.

For Tamagotchi, the widget is meant to replace the current XO in the center
of the screen - but still retain it's functionality -.
Ideally it would still look like the XO, but have some personality.

I think that your best bet is to send mails to sugar-devel and not
personally.

Always try to cc sugar-devel@lists.sugarlabs.org even when you send emails
personally.

While I do think that you might want to choose another project if you need
a lot of handholding from mentors in this project, you can also use your
wisdom to tackle issues and improve the dashboard yourself.

Go ahead, design good stuff and start implementing. Just keep in mind who
are we making it for (students/kids), why are we making it (to enable
learning). This high level understanding of how things work here will help
you make useful decisions yourself.

A few of our previous GSoC students have made the most amazing
mistakes or wasted time by working without a wider community
consensus.

Other projects we work with, such as Debian, have in their social

Hope that helps!

You're missing one layer; the Sugar Toolkit. The toolkit provides
activity instance sharing. CollabWrapper uses the toolkit.

See attached digraph.

The difference between using the toolkit directly and using
CollabWrapper is;

- simplified API, making it easier to add to an activity that does not
  yet support collaboration,

- one additional dependency (CollabWrapper),

- ongoing need to maintain source files copied from another
  repository.

CollabWrapper is recent compared to the toolkit. We have many
activities that use the toolkit and Telepathy directly for
collaboration rather than use CollabWrapper. Unless you can give a
good user-experience reason, there is not a good justification to port
such an activity to using CollabWrapper.

> What I propose now as a GSoC project is to make use of CollabWrapper
> and enable several other activities to support collaboration.

Good. We had already thought of that though. ;-)

We have these compatible project ideas listed;

- "Improve and maintain 25 Sugar activities",

https://github.com/sugarlabs/GSoC/blob/master/Ideas-2019.md#improve-and-maintain-25-sugar-activities

- "Port Sugar and core activities to Python 3",

https://github.com/sugarlabs/GSoC/blob/master/Ideas-2019.md#port-sugar-and-core-activities-to-python-3

- "Create a new set of activities",
https://github.com/sugarlabs/GSoC/blob/master/Ideas-2019.md#create-a-new-set-of-activities

So please add your name to assisting mentors in one or more of the
above ideas if you'd like to be involved. The only requirement for an
assisting mentor is knowledge of the project.

Please also briefly edit the project descriptions to include
collaboration where appropriate. We'll review your edits in pull
request.

Going over the recent threads on sugar-devel mailing lists, I came across a
thread that proposed to implement adapter like modules for pygame, GTK and
other third party libraries that sugar runs on. There, I noticed the
mention of CollabWrapper as a module that certain activities use to enable
collaboration over multiple running sugar instances. I understand that
CollabWrapper uses Telepathy, GLib as the underlying C code.

What I propose now as a GSoC project is to make use of CollabWrapper and
enable several other activities to support collaboration. Sugarlabs has
over 300 repositories and wide set of activities, and many such activities
has the potential to be run on several instances at once, basically
supporting collaboration, but do not do so at the moment. I feel the
project aligns with the pedagogical requirements that need to be met by
project. At the same time, we can also fix existing issues regarding
collaboration that some activities currently have. We can identify 20-30
activities that can support collaboration but do not so at the moment, and
thus, make them support collaboration.

I sincerely welcome suggestions and changes to what I've proposed from the
developer community. I wish to see what other features and proposals we can
add to this.

Regards,
Swarup N.

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSoC 2019 call for assisting mentors

2019-02-13 Thread James Cameron
G'day Amaan,

Thanks for your interest. When you have had the time to confirm,
please make a pull request to our GSoC 2019 Ideas, or if you can't do
that let me know and I'll make one for you.

We did change requirements for mentors, as you can see here;
https://github.com/sugarlabs/GSoC/blob/master/Ideas-2019.md#coding-mentors
https://github.com/sugarlabs/GSoC/blob/master/Ideas-2019.md#assisting-mentors

Our GSoC 2019 Ideas shows who have offered to be mentors. Sugar Labs
will select mentors based on those offers and the student proposals
received. It might be all of the mentors, it might be a few of them,
we can't really know yet. Walter will be the most involved, but don't
go trying to contact him directly, that's unfair on everyone else.

Timeline for GSoC 2019 is here
https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline

I don't know if there is a final date for mentors to apply, and I'm
not sure if the question makes sense.  As an organisation we agree to;

* "Select and invite trusted, capable, and qualified mentors",

* "Oversee activity of all mentors and students ensuring
   responsibilities are being met", and;

* "Ensure adequate and appropriate mentoring coverage, particularly
   near holidays".

https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/help/responsibilities

Given the timeline;

* mentors _should_ get themselves listed by 26th February so that the
ideas are well defined, and the mentors are visible when the
   mentoring organisations are published, and;

* mentors _must_ get themselves listed or delisted before the 9th
   April student proposals deadline.

Hope that helps!

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSoC 2019 call for assisting mentors

2019-02-06 Thread Amaan Iqbal
Hello Everyone,

I am interested in mentoring a few of the following projects:

   - Reconciling rhythm with pitch in Music Blocks widgets

   - Expand Sugarizer Exerciser activity

   - Write activity for Sugarizer

   - Colored desktop and activity icons

   - Improve Sugarizer Server Dashboard

But I am unsure of the time which I would be able to allocate during
May-June due to some specific reasons. I will mostly be available during
July-August.

So I need some time to confirm whether I would be able to mentor or not.

Can the board members please tell until when can an organization add
mentors to GSoC? And if there is any other pre-requisite to be done from my
side to be eligible to mentor.

You don't need to be able to code. Please reply to the mailing list(s) if
you'd like to help with non-coding mentoring, including gathering requirements,
visual design, testing, or deployment.

[Sugar-devel] GSOC 2019 Aspirant

2019-01-27 Thread ROHIT RAJHANS
Hi all,

I am Rohit Rajhans, an undergraduate sophomore pursuing B.E.(Hons) in
Computer Science from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani,
India. I have tried and tested MusicBlocks and find it really interesting.
I found the idea of "*Performance in Musicblocks*" exciting and critical
and I would love to contribute.

I am proficient in JavaScript. I have also worked with Reach framework. One
of my recent projects was to automate the process of providing car insurance
. It was a web application that
could predict whether a customer should be given car insurance or not based
on certain factors. I have also worked in development of websites for my
college festivals.
Other than JavaScript, I am familiar with C/C++, Java and HTML/CSS.

Could you suggest some beginner issues to familiarise myself with the code?

Sincerely,
Rohit Rajhans

Re: [Sugar-devel] GSOC 2019 Student

2019-01-17 Thread James Cameron
Welcome,

As chair of the board; Sugar Labs has decided to apply for Google
Summer fo Code 2019, and once our application has been submitted we
will wait in hope for Google to select us.

As for myself;

You can get started however you like. Don't wait for us to explain,
and don't expect us to set specific tasks to get started with. If

Hi developers,
My name is Farakh. I'm a first year undergrad from Air University,
Pakistan.
I've been coding for 1 years now and I'm just starting to explore the world
of open source. Came to know about Sugar Labs from GSOC Archives and I
loved the mission. I have some experience with C++ and I'm a big time
python and web development enthusiast. I want to start contributing right
away and I would really appreciate your help! I want to participate in
Google Summer of code 2019 on a Sugar labs project. Can you also guide me
in this regard to GSOC 2019?

Best Regards,
Farakh
