Re: [Sugar-devel] time for a design meeting?

2011-02-12 Thread Sascha Silbe
Excerpts from Walter Bender's message of Sat Feb 12 02:26:21 +0100 2011:

Thanks. This is very helpful. I have a couple of additional topics:
one trivial and one that needs some discussion.
[...]

I took the liberty of collecting the requested topics on the wiki
page [1] and arranging them according to urgency (i.e. 0.92 vs. later)
and guesstimated time it will take to discuss them:

Topics for 0.92:
* Size issue with icons in Random Layout (Home View) (walterbender)
* Speaker frame device: pop up palette on left-click instead of toggling
  mute (silbe)
* Don't hide Register menu item upon successful registration (silbe)
* Journal entries on external media:
Invalidate preview]
if the data file was changed? (silbe)
* Remove 'Keep' Button: Replace by 'copy to' functionality in the Journal
  (erikos)
** Alternative (if we can't agree on removing it): rename 'Keep' to 'Keep Copy'
   (silbe)
* Move more activities to the new toolbar (erikos)

I expect the 0.92 topics to take up all our time and would prefer to
schedule another meeting for the remaining topics. If, however, we have
still plenty of time left, we could start discussing some near-future
changes:

Topics for 0.94+:
* CPU and memory resource indicator for the Frame (silbe)
* Activity startup in the Home View: Introduce new concept to distinguish
between 'start new' vs 'resume' (erikos)
* Replace Naming Alert: a) switch to Journal detail view b) option in the
activity toolbar to do a description and tags (erikos)
* Control Panel

rework]
  (erikos)
* Frame: Expand hot corner on the upper left to be the entire grid cell
  (big enough for finger) (walterbender)

Hi Walter,

I can not attend the meeting, but here are the issues I am aware off:

(derived from [1]):

* Move more activities to the new toolbar

* Don't hide Register menu item upon successful registration

Introduction: The reset registration to the school server has a long
history [2][3]. The patch that landed in master is based on a request
from a deployment (re-register after an XS crash), other use cases are
to connect to another school server (different school). Another
deployment recently requested to hide the item altogether because
they're apparently doing the registration automatically in some way. To
consider in the design discussion is as well the lack of feedback when
registering [4].

Todo: We should describe the use cases and then find a good way of
fixing this issue. This would be best handled by an email discussion
streamlined in a Feature page [5].

* CPU and memory resource indicator for the frame

- Master work
I want to move on with these items. The first two have been discussed
already.

# Activity startup in the Home View: Introduce new concept to
distinguish between 'start new' vs 'resume', previous discussion [6]
Gary's design: introducing a selector [7] (I like that a lot).

# Replace Naming Alert: a) switch to Journal detail view b) option in
the activity toolbar to do a description and tags, discussion at the
design team meeting, previous discussion [8]

# Remove 'Keep As' Button: Replace by 'copy to' functionality in the
Journal [9]

   Simon

Re: [Sugar-devel] time for a design meeting?

2011-02-11 Thread Walter Bender
Thanks. This is very helpful. I have a couple of additional topics:
one trivial and one that needs some discussion.

1. Trivial: as per #2592, there is an issue with size of the icons on
the Random view. When I introduced the spiral, I increased the maximum
icon size to Medium when there are few icons on the screen. Random
forces these icons to Standard size. So should Random change the size
of the icons? If so, to what size?

2. It is clear that we have some issues with invoking the hot corners
to invoke the Frame under certain conditions: touch, VMs where Sugar
is not run at full screen, and in situations where there is a flakey
touch screen. We've added F6 to remind this under some circumstances
(but it isn't always a help, e.g., on a tablet.) I propose expanding
the hot corner on the upper left to be the entire grid in that corner
-- big enough to hit with a finger or with a cursor that would
otherwise slide off the edge of the window.

[Sugar-devel] time for a design meeting?

There are a few design roadblocks in the race to 0.92 that could use
