Just hover over an icon in the svg to see the name, or did you mean something
else? I was considering putting in dividers to separate the different sections,

too little space for the actual icons.

Re: [Sugar-devel] [DESIGN] Contact sheet for all sugar-artwork icons

2011-04-03 Thread Gary Martin
Oh blast, thanks Sean/Walter, I'd tested in Safari and Chrome with no problems.
Firefox was also working fine but recently I reworked the svg to define all
the images in the defs section and then using use to actually place them
(this makes inserting removing new icons in the correct grid position much
easier). I'll revert to the old technique and re-test in Firefox.

Probably time to make a quick python script to generate the xml...

O.T. I have a pretty much working process for generating the weekly mail list
SOM as SVGs, with working built in pan and zoom, resolution independent and
searchable text, and a smaller file size (the jpg's I upload are about 300Kb,
the svgz of the same map was about 200Kb). Unfortunately it looks like browser
support of svg varies enough to derail the practicality of this.

It's the icon Eben made for the My Settings menu (formerly known as the control
panel). Note that it's currently designed larger and as clean as possible for
menu item placement, rather than as a toolbar icon, much like the system-search
magnifying glass icon (that looks wrong as used in Wikipedia's toolbar).

Christian: maybe you want to use your 'pencil making a checkmark' idea for My
Settings instead (though I think Eben may have already been down that route
when finally choosing the spanner) ;-)

Oooh, I just noticed. Shouldn't the icon for Register at least be the nice
school server icon (at least until we drop Register from this menu and put it
where it belongs in the Neighbourhood view)? Looks like it's using the
media-record icon just now.

I'm pretty sure this icon was never intended in the usual toolbar button
placement, it is the system-search visual that appears inside search input
fields so needs to be as large and clear as possible given its intended
placement size. I'd flag WIkibrowse's use of it in the toolbar as incorrect.
It's been a while since I downloaded the Wikipedia activity (due to it's
very large size), could you post a screen shot or two (or upload them to the
 http://activities.sugarlabs.org/en-US/sugar/addon/4401 page so there are
some thumbnails for users to see)?

I have attached a image with the toolbar of wikipedia. May be I must use
 another icon?

Could you show a screen shot with the secondary toolbar open? Is it just a
search input field under there? This browses a local version of wikipedia, yes?
If so I'd be rather tempted to remove the primary location field and reload
widget, and put the search field up in all that primary space...

If you want to stay with the current design, it would be a quick svg tweak to
make a correctly sized custom version of the system-search icon for you to
include in your bundle, ping me by email if that's what you want.

The question: The arrows up and down with the media icon inside, are
supposed to be used to transfer media or to save/load from journal? I think
are better to transfer, but i saw these used to save to/load from the
 journal

You mean the ones starting at 11 along, 5 down? These are used for the 'send
to friend --' Journal feature for transferring Journal objects between
 friends:

http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/File:Send-to.png

The icons appear in the top frame and provide a palette that provides the
 user control and transfer information:

http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/File:Activitiestray_transfer_to_icon.png

Can you remember where you saw them being used to save to/load from the
 Journal?

 Yes, in TurtleArt.

Oh yes, Walter's snuck some very similar ones into Turtle Blocks (they only
appear in monochrome). I don't wholly object, we've been on quite a meandering
path trying to find suitable import/export to Journal icons (badging the keep
icon can get too fussy especially if you need to show direction for
differencing input and export). Though it would be nice if Walter could
standardise on naming them import/export rather than a mix of old school Save
as, Load, and one Import. ;-)

Yes, I've added the topic to the design meeting agenda next week as Record is a
very popular Activity. Hopefully this will also get you feedback from a
slightly wider audience.

A comment and a question about the icons: The loupe (6 along, 5 down) looks
bigger than the other icons (in WIkibrowse is very visible).

I'm pretty sure this icon was never intended in the usual toolbar button
placement, it is the system-search visual that appears inside search input
fields so needs to be as large and clear as possible given its intended
placement size. I'd flag WIkibrowse's use of it in the toolbar as incorrect.
It's been a while since I downloaded the Wikipedia activity (due to it's very
large size), could you post a screen shot or two (or upload them to the
http://activities.sugarlabs.org/en-US/sugar/addon/4401 page so there are some
thumbnails for users to see)?

Re: [Sugar-devel] [DESIGN] Contact sheet for all sugar-artwork icons

2011-03-21 Thread Christian Marc Schmidt
This is great Gary, thanks so much! Most of the icons are already very good
and quite consistent. And there are a few we could definitely improve.

I see we already have both a wrench and a cog. But the more I think about
it, it seems that preferences could be a form with checkboxes, or even a
pencil making a checkmark. Seems that the message we want to communicate is
having a choice, more than the inner workings implied by the cog/gear.
What do you think?

Oooh, sorry, I should have said the svg I'm playing with has hover over names
(and I was planning on adding markers for device, emblems, etc), just that I've
not uploaded the svg yet (it links to the files in git.sl.org so wanted a quick
standalone png first as a static point in time). I'm also re-looking at the
emblem icons as I have a git merge request still outstanding from last year
(makes them high contrast instead of the current grey scale), but just looking
again incase there's more tweaks – part of the reason for making this contact
sheet. There was one new badge icon (emblem-buddy) so I didn't post the svg yet
as it's not in mainline.
