Hello Kevin,

I really believe that this look is not only quite different but rather
attractive as well - I am incorporating it in my current design - thank you

Dear Colleagues

You may be interested in the attached chart of the Equation of Time for
2011. It is of interest for a number of reasons...
- it is an 'intrinsic' plot - not the familiar cartesian, polar or
analemmatic form.

An intrinsic plot has equal increments of the independent
variable along the curve of the plot rather than along the x-axis.

This allows the curve to be folded - making a very compact form.
- it is much easier to read than a normal plot, because the day
points are all equally spaced along the curve.
- it looks good !

RE: International Year of Astronomy 2009

2008-12-31 Thread Les Lombard
Hello Everybody!

Please do keep the Southern Hemisphere in mind – with that said we have a
sunnier winter than the North – surely the middle of winter is not such a
good idea for the North with high probability of a missing sun? So in
principle I would recommend a suitable day in the Northern summer?

I respectfully disagree with Roger.

Christmas is under attack here in the United States by people who don’t
observe it. But 83% of us do observe Christmas. This has caused a great
deal of friction and animosity between the two groups. The last thing that
we want is for people to associate sundials and dialists with the people who
are attacking Christmas!

I nominate the 25 December as International Sundial Day. It is the feast day
of Sol Invictus, the unconquered sun, and the start of the festive season of
Saturnalia. On 25 December the Equation of Time is zero. What could be more
appropriate.

Yes, the day has been co-opted by others who are now pretty established in
their beliefs but perhaps now is the time to recapture the true meaning of
the solstice.

Let's celebrate the Return of the Sun on International Sundial Day 25
December. Happy New Year.

I agree with you Reinhold, I believe that we have in this group the main
representatives persons around the world in relation to sundials! If there
isn't an internation sundial day, it's time to discuss about it and choose
one day to comemorate.

I wish a happy new year to you all.

O Riccardo! J

Look at the US-American sites which promote this “International Year of
Astronomy” and you will soon find out why sundials are not interesting at
all to them…

But why not “disturbing” positively some of these glamour-posters with
sundials?

We are a powerful group, well organized in different mailing lists around
the world J … and the year is long!

So I suppose the first “attack” will come from Brazil?!

Best wishes!

Hello Diallist community,

I wish everybody a happy an sunny 2009.

In several brazilian sites an blogs people are talking about IYA 2009.
Checking the monthly scheduled activities for the whole year around the
country I was not able to find anyone related to- or that even mention
sundials. Is this the same in the other countries? Does anybody know why
sundials are not being considered as something to be covered?

Best regards,

RE: In the Bible, what time is the 6th hour in GMT?

2008-03-22 Thread Les Lombard
Hello Willy and all on this topic,

I believe the version of the Bible you are reading possibly already suffers
from translation issues relating to the understanding of the time system -
examples of translation (ha,ha) old versions of the Bible God created woman
to serve man) latest versions (God created woman to be a companion for man)
- a significant difference only due to translation and current concepts!

I think Fer is right, Antique hours are periods not moments.

Nevertheless in Mat 20 1-16 I read AT the eleventh hour, not IN the
eleventh hour.

The (shortened) text:

The master of a household went out early in the morning to hire laborers for
his vineyard.

.

About the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle. He said
to them 'You also go into the vineyard, and you will receive whatever is
right.'

.

When the laborers who were hired at about the eleventh hour came to receive
their wages, they each received a denarius. When the first came, they
likewise each received a denarius.

When they received it, they murmured saying, 'These last have spent one
hour, and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the burden of the
day and the scorching heat!'

Roger, Wee-meng,

I think the timesystem in the Bible are antique hours, 12 hours from sunrise
to sunset.

With the latest Dutch translation of the Bible a few years ago it was
discussed to use our timesystem but I am glad they didn't. The antique
hours are still in use.

Many times is said that noon is 6 but it is the end of the sixth hour and
the seventh hour start.

With sunrise the first hour start.

Halfway afternoon 9 hours has past and the tenth hpour start.

Antique hours are not moments as we are used to but an hour is a period of
time.

It is in the nineth hour and so on.

Best wishes, Fer.

I would say noon for the 6th hour. An interesting point on Biblical time. I

am reminded of the workers in the vineyard Mat 20 1-16. Those that started

at the 11th hour were paid the same as those that bore the heat of the
day.
They needed a better union for fair wages.

Day started at sunrise. Was it unequal hours, 12 hours per day of
daylight,
every day of the year? Or was it Babylonian hours, equal hours starting at

sunrise. I suspect the former but the day starts at sunset for Jews.
Friday
night is part of the Sabbath Day. Does this time refer to equal hours
starting at sunset, Italian hours. What are the Biblical hours? I don't
know. Today at the equinox, it does not matter. Biblical hours,
Babylonian
hours or Italian hours using 12 hour cycles are all the same today.

I do know that many religious ceremonies start at at 3:00 pm , Good
Friday,
the ninth hour in Biblical and many other times.

 Hi,

Today as everyone knows is Good Friday. I was reading my bible and in
the
following verse it mentions about the sixth hour and the ninth hour.

Luke 23:44-45 It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the
whole land until the ninth hour, [45] for the sun stopped shining. And
curtain of the temple was torn in two.

I'm trying to figure out what time that is in GMT and the Israel local
 time.
Is it 6pm Israel local time? If so, does the Sun shine there from 6pm to
 9pm normally?

I'm staying near the equator and the Sun rises and sets about 7am, 7pm
 (our
local time is moved forward 1 hr so in solar time, it's 6am/6pm)
 respectively all year round.

 thx!
 weemeng
