Re: Strange sundial in China

Perhaps a geometrically convoluted gnomon.

Re: New indoor sundial with lens/mirror

2018-04-20 Thread R.Pauli

Spectacular! Techno-Modern-Gnomonics.

Almost a reverse display, instead of shadow, the point of light is the
display.   Sort of a reflecting gnomon -rather than a shadow.   In my
translated page it is called a shadow - but should there be a different
term for a concentrated spot of light? Maybe a 'negative' display?

For the next version, I would want to see a prism that eould expand and
colorize the light.  Although I am unaware of the challenges of
deploying glass optics.

Superb design.   thanks

Re: Sundial books for children

2017-11-05 Thread R.Pauli

Children's tale of  Mr. Stemwinder Finds the Time
Childrens' book written by Stephen Y. Bready, illustrated by Antoinette
Delaney.- around 1979

Mr Stemwinder collected clocks... loved to hear them chime on the
   hour and noon and midnight
But one autumn day he got lost walking in the woods
He could not return home in time to wind all his time pieces.
So they all stopped, He could no longer set his clocks, because he
   didn't know the time.
Distressed that his house was silent of tick-tocks and chimes,
He went out into his garden to be sad.
Among the piles of leaves, he sat on what he thought was a bench.
   He sat on a sundial!
He brushed aside the leaves and let the sun tell him the time.
That's how Mr Stemwinder found the time.

Hello,

I am looking for titles of sundial books for children. I particularly

to know some of your experiences in working with kids. What do you
think is the best approach to teach 10 year olds about sundials?

Same action, different view.

Sort of like having a fixed gnomon shadow and a rotating dial face

Astounding video... great, instructional experience.

Re: largest sundial

2015-10-27 Thread R.Pauli
I heard Bill Nye The Science Guy talk about his father wanting to set
out marks for the Washington Monument.

Great idea, but the problem was the fuzzy shadow.

Can someone please tell me what is the world’s largest sundial? If a
vertical tower, how high above the ground is the nodus? I have been
consulted by someone who is claiming that a tower he wants to use as a
sundial, which is 162m tall, will be the world’s largest dial. There
are many issues with a dial of this size, which will be explained to
him, but I would like to know about sizes of other large dials,
please. This is not just a tall building casting a shadow, but one
where there are hour markings on the ground.

With best wishes to you all,
