We also used to get a lot from Olark. I assume they improved
communication with their contractors (as I believe they still use, or
at least offer, Pidgin). I think it's because Oracle a) uses Pidgin
as official policy, and b) does not provide good guidance or tech
support to their users. I don't think it's any sort of complicated
scenario.

If that's it, I still don't understand such a disproportionality of Oracle
users among those asking site-specific questions.

The holy grail of this issue would be to find what or who is pointing all the
Oracle users to this mailing list.

The standard response to Oracle employees is now as follows:

"Try this Oracle knowledge base article:

You must be logged into the Oracle VPN to view it."

We do not know anything about Oracle services, this is a peer support
list for a third-party software package (Pidgin) used by Oracle.

Try this Oracle knowledge base article:

http://my.oracle.com/site/git/1591/index.htm

You must be logged into the Oracle VPN to view it.

There seems to be some confusion here. Oracle IT support have said they
don't support Pidgin, but that doesn't mean that it isn't the
recommended client for their internal IM system. There are just too
many Oracle employees failing to use it for it not to have been
recommended by someone in Oracle. My response was saying, if IT don't
support it, who recommended it, as they presumably have to support it.

(On the other hand, I think it was eventually concluded that this
particular case was an Oracle employee trying to use Pidgin for personal
use.)

I presume that no-one on this list actually knows what is in that article.

Who told you to use Pidgin? You need to ask them, as people on this peer
support list are not going to be able to support your use of Oracle's internal
IM systems.

Pidgin is not supported on Oracle's internal IM systems, as was told
you by Oracle support.
