There is a new project raising, at the moment in the phase of
crowdfunding, to bring a normal Linux system to a new hardware of a
mobile (i.e. the project is open hardware plus open Linux, not with
Android blobs). It is here: https://puri.sm/shop/librem-5/ and they have
already reached 91% of the goal and have 15 days left. I supported the
project by ordering one complete device, it's a risk but money risked
for a good sense. This device, due to it's software stack, would
perhaps allow to port libpurple to it.

No, I'm kidding. I know how to unsubscribe. I have used pidgin for many
years on my FreeBSD laptops/netbooks and I only want to say thanks for
the nice piece of software and for the support of the active members of
this list before I do unsubscribe me (only because I do not have any contacts

In general I'm with you, David. The nasty consequence of not having
OpenSource implementations of (reversed engineered) proprietary
protocols is that all, even willing people, are encouraged to buy mobile
device with iOs, Android, ... with all such crappy apps, instead
of Ubuntu mobile devices, or even worth, use WhatsApe or however this

 There's a lot of stuff on the web about this. I don't understand why
 you're getting that specific error, but it appears to be a missing
 library on the link line. This likely means that the Pidgin configure
 scripts aren't finding something that they probably don't know to look
 for; I'm not sure exactly how this is happening.

The linkage command is in both cases (the good and the broken) the same:

/bin/sh ../libtool --silent --silent --tag=CC --mode=link cc -g

-lgthread-2.0 -pthread -lglib-2.0 -lintl -L/usr/local/lib -lxml2
./libgnt/libgnt.la ../libpurple/libpurple.la -lm

so the problem must either be in one of the *.o file or in one of the two local
libs ./libgnt/libgnt.la ../libpurple/libpurple.la; needs further
debugging

It works fine with a small change in the ./configure script:

$ diff configure.orig configure
17455c17455
   GNT_LIBS=-lncursesw
---
   GNT_LIBS=-lncursesw -ltinfow

Maybe it's an issue only with FreeBSD, or even with certain environments
of FreeBSD. It is fine without this change on 11-CURRENT, while the
above issue is with 10-ALPHA.

I think, we can close this thread. Thanks for your help.

problem compiling pidgin 2.10.10

What could cause this problem? And can I somehow disable the use of

I think, it is the same problem. Without the Application Id fix, pidgin
is sending again and again with high frequency the request for the
contact list (I saw this with --debug set). Pidgin should give up after
certain amount of retries.

It's boring to read again and again the same question which are already

A short note on this for Ubuntu or Linux users (I normally use FreeBSD):

I've compiled Pidgin on the Ubuntu 14.04 laptop of my wife and it turned out
that the normal Ubuntu distribution of Pidgin is installed below
/usr/lib, while your compilation from source will end up below
/usr/local/lib; especially the libpurple.so will be in the way and your
new compiled Pidgin will not work with MSN until you 'atp-get remove ...'
pidgin *and* the libpurple packages.

 Unless your password is very, very bad, a base64 encoding of the
 password should be of roughly similar complexity. Therefore, anyone
 who can remember your password can remember the base64 -- and reverse
 it.

Not sure about this;

$ echo password | openssl enc -base64

While one can easy see with a short eye shoot and remember the token
'password', it is not so easy pickup from the screen the token
'cGFzc3dvcmQK'.

 If your assertion is that someone will remember Oj4=puC/8jq but not
 T2o0PXB1Qy84anEK, then your argument has descended into the realm of
 the absurd. To effectively snatch either one they're going to have to
 either see it for a long time, see it many times, or take some sort of
 photo/record.

I think 'Oj4=puC/8jq' is much easier to memorize due to the fact, that
it has 3 groups of 3 chars each: Oj4 puC 8jq, separated by '=' and '/',
while the token T2o0PXB1Qy84anEK is much complex to memorize, don't
you agree?

Btw: I'm fine with storing the pws in clear text in pidgin, because
it is a personal computer, and one will not bring them on the screen
without knowing why he/she is doing that.

 You can just extract this data from the blist.xml file, in the sense
 that the MSN user IDs are most likely email addresses of those people.

Yeah! UNIX is simple, as always. A simple

 This is likely Yahoo's doing. They had, last I knew at least, a hard-coded
 7-second resend timer on messages if they do not hear back from the
 recipient's client that they were received. So for conversations taking
 place over poorer network connections that timer will likely trigger more
 often than expected.

 It is always possible that this is pidgin's fault but I doubt it.

Ok; if I have some time I will try to catch such a situation with debug

 Given that the original poster didn't mention their OS, is using
 Outlook, and that ~90% of the desktop market uses Windows, it's
 reasonable to assume Windows unless otherwise specified. Also consider
 that users of less popular OSes are used to specifying their OS, whereas
 Windows users usually don't, so this alone can be reasonably assumed to
 be Windows more often than not ...

I do not question what you say, but do you think that someone asking for
help, even someone from the ~90% of the desktop market, has the right to
be lazy to provide information about the OS (and the used version of
pidgin)? That was my point concerning the OP.

Hi Kiran,

You do not say anything about the OS you are using (and so I supose it
is Windows, because Linux or FreBSD folks know that there are other OS
and would have mention this). On a normal Linux or FreeBSD OS the chat
dialogues are just plain UTF-8 text files and are store below:

~/.purple/logs/provider-name/your-account/remote-account/date.time.txt

You can later read them with any text tool, like for example 'vi'.

Try starting pidgin from a command line (also called DOS prompt) and

there is for sure a way to do). And watch what it is saying. In a normal

Normaly it should build fine with:

$ ./configure

Ofc the 'configure' is checking you installed environment for shared

In FreeBSD 9-CURRENT I build 2.7.9 and 2.7.11 with these option:

$ CFLAGS='-I/usr/local/include' CPPFLAGS='-I/usr/local/include'

Pidgin 2.7.9 does not compile on FreeBSD 9-CURRENT because this does not
have utmp.h anymore; see http://wiki.freebsd.org/PortsBrokenOnCurrent
for more details about the change from utmp.h to utmpx.h;

in our case it is enough to delete the line 33 in file
pidgin-2.7.9/libpurple/protocols/zephyr/Zinternal.c

For the rest it compiles fine and seems to work.

 There should also be an additional log entry here saying:
 (hh:mm:ss) gnutls: Dropping further peer certificates because the chain is
 broken!

 Are you sure you are not using an older libpurple with current Pidgin?

 What does pidgin -v report as the versions of Pidgin libpurple?
 Are you sure you don't have both self-compiled and distro-provided
 pidgin in your path and running the wrong one? Does running ldconfig
 as root fix pidgin 2.7.7 to link to correct libpurple 2.7.7 ?

 If libpurple version is correct are you sure the ssl-gnutls.so plugin is
 the one from 2.7.7? You'd probably have to check file timestamp to make
 sure it was compiled around the same time (it's in
 $prefix/lib/purple-2/ssl-gnutls.so)

 Please also check from running pidgin -d exactly which ssl-gnutls.so
 is being loaded.

I digged into this and it turned out that pidgin says:

g...@current:~ pidgin -v
Pidgin 2.7.7 (libpurple 2.7.7)
g...@current:~ ldd /usr/local/bin/pidgin | fgrep purple
libpurple.so.7 = /usr/local/lib/libpurple.so.7 (0x289e)

but the /usr/local/lib/libpurple.so.7 was an older one, installed from
the FreeBSD ports: libpurple-2.5.5_1; I deleted this package and compiled pidgin
again with:

$ CFLAGS='-I/usr/local/include' CPPFLAGS='-I/usr/local/include' ./configure
--disable-nm --disable-tcl --enable-gnutls=yes --with-gnutls-libs=/usr/local/lib

now it says:

g...@current:~ strings /usr/local/lib/libpurple.so.7 | fgrep Bad
...Bad or missing signature by %s

and pidgin uses ssl-gnutls.so:

g...@current:~ pidgin -d | fgrep gnutls
(10:10:44) plugins: probing /usr/local/lib/purple-2/ssl-gnutls.so
(10:10:45) plugins: Loading saved plugin /usr/local/lib/purple-2/ssl-gnutls.so

and it works fine now;

 As has been mentioned multiple times in this list, and would turn up if

No, even in 2.7.6 it is not fixed; it depends on which server you will
be directed by DNS for omega.contacts.msn.com; see my posting in this
list Message-ID: 20101122123145.ga90...@current.sisis.de

 When built with NSS/NSPR 2.7.6 does almost completely fix the problem.
 Some people still have initial connection failures but a retry or two is
 usually enough to sort that out and get things working.

 Unfortunately, when built with GnuTLS 2.7.6 is still broken for the
 incorrectly configured servers because of a difference in how GnuTLS
 handles presenting libpurple the certificate chain. A problem that was not
 detected in the limited testing that was done before the release.

 Fixes for both of those issues have been found and committed to mtn.

Do I have to checkout some special branch from Monotone to get this
fixes? Thanks

Re: Pidgin 2.7.3 on Maemo5 - SSL certificates for MSN invalid

 People don't understand certificates. At all. Which is why they were
 perfectly willing to download certificates for the omega server from any
 blog/host that happened to have them up. That page is hosted on the
 pidgin.im server, the pem files come from the pidgin source, those exact
 files will be in the next release of pidgin which people will implicitly
 trust when they upgrade, etc.

 Any text talking about verifying things is going to complicate and confuse
 the situation more than I think it could possibly help though I do
 appreciate the thinking that goes into requesting it.

 I'm open to adding a note to the bottom explaining the potential dangers
 with doing this sort of thing but anything more than that I think would be
 too much.

I've right now compiled 2.7.6 on FreeBSD 8.x. It has two issues:

1)
the MSN certificate issue; the certificate is not validated after the
start of pidgin; it takes a while and it seems that if pidgin contacts
some of the *.contacts server it works, while it does not for others;
I could run it with --debug to get a list of the IP addrs...

2)
to get NLS support (for example a Spanish GUI) I must run the
./configure as:

$ CFLAGS='-I/usr/local/include' CPPFLAGS='-I/usr/local/include' ./configure
--disable-nm --disable-tc

and enable '#define ENABLE_NLS 1' in config.h by hand; this was already
the case with 2.6.2 and easy to solve, because I saved the old mail :-)

Thanks for your work in any case

and here is the data from the debug log:

Pidgin resolves via DNS for omega.contacts.msn.com 5 times the IP addr
207.46.113.78 which has the following certificates:

(13:08:31) gnutls/x509: Key print:
ac:7e:e4:5f:97:b8:7e:f0:0b:ac:a6:51:9f:ba:51:f0:ad:73:17:8b

3d:29:1d:b8:ee:22:be:e1:33:70:06:f2:ef:c6:f9:db:dd:03:bb:25

Then it resolves to 207.46.118.183 which has other certificates:

(13:16:03) gnutls/x509: Key print:
c8:f3:b1:69:52:36:07:33:b5:02:1b:a2:b2:b4:ce:32:b9:68:37:36

(13:16:03) gnutls/x509: Key print:
e5:95:8d:48:fe:10:d7:34:03:11:e8:c0:3b:b2:29:40:da:ba:2d:a3

and it can verify with success:

(13:16:03) certificate: Successfully verified certificate for
omega.contacts.msn.com

i.e. it depends of the server in question :-(

  Hello,
  I LOVE using Pidgin WAY better than IM. Please tell me how I can fix this.
  I have been all over the website trying to find the FIX for this

  started yesterday morning and wouldn't allow me in all day until all
  of a sudden yesterday afternoon I was able to get in. But now this
   morning same thing.

 The answer can be found here:

 It's not too difficult a process, but make sure that the .pem files you
 download are renamed to remove the string before Microsoft_* in their
 filenames.

 If you need further help, please ask

Hello Brian,

I've downloaded and installed the certificates and they are read on
start of pidgin:

# cd /usr/local/share/purple/ca-certs
# ls -lutr M*
-rw-r--r--  1 guru  wheel  6153 21 nov 10:00
Microsoft_Secure_Server_Authority_2010.pem
-rw-r--r--  1 root  wheel  2202 21 nov 10:00
Microsoft_Secure_Server_Authority.pem
-rw-r--r--  1 guru  wheel  5764 21 nov 10:00
Microsoft_Internet_Authority_2010.pem
-rw-r--r--  1 root  wheel  1809 21 nov 10:00 Microsoft_Internet_Authority.pem

But, sometimes it still gives the error message about could not
validate the certificate for omega.contacts.msn.com, sometimes it
works after a few retries; what I am missing?

This is with 2.6.2 on FreeBSD 8.x

Thanks
