As far as I can tell, all the Twitter plugins are third party, so you
should seek support from whoever provided the plugins you are using.
The message will be from a plugin, not from Pidgin itself.

Most IM services and protocols have mobile phone apps. You would need
to choose one for the particular service. Pidgin would be irrelevant to
that.

Re: question about the nickname

2019-05-27 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Steffen,

If you right-click on a buddy and choose 'Get Info' does the alias for that
user update?
In the XMPP server, is the nickname of the ldap user set to update the
alias in the xmpp roster?

The sender is configured in the client through the 'Local Alias' setting in
Pidgin, through Tools->Accounts->Manage Accounts->{The XMPP
Account}->Modify->Local alias

question about the nickname

2019-05-27 Thread Much, Steffen
Hello,
we are using pidgin together with openfire.
The authentication runs with LDAP and we have configured openfire that the
nickname is filled with the LDAP information "displayname".

The login with pidgin works fine but the nickname is not automatically filled
with the LDAP information. The Nickname is empty and in conversations i see for
the sender the username@xmpp-domain/ info.

How can i achieve, that the nickname is automatically filled with the LDAP
information ?

Thanks

Question about Pidgin DBus API

2019-02-13 Thread Andrei Dobrescu
hello.

I am trying to develop a desktop utility app based on Pidgin purple DBus
api. I successfully managed to send a message to a particular user. I used
PurpleFindBuddies(accountId, NULL) that returned an array with the ids of
the buddies from the account's list. And then PurpleConversationNew,
PurpleConvIm, PurpleConvImSend to send the message to the buddy.

But I also need to send messages to groups / rooms. But i am getting an
error when I try to get the group list.. I am using d-feet DBus explorer
tool to find and execute the APIs. I am calling
PurpleAccountGetConnection(20306) -> 20392 and then
PurpleRoomlistGetList(20392).. but the output in d-feet is
'g-io-error-quark: GDBus.Error:im.pidgin.purple.ObjectNotFound: The return
object is not mapped (this is a Purple error) (36)'
Is this a bug or I am doing something wrong? Should I call another function?

Can you, please guide me how to find group ids, names and how to send a
message to a specific group?

I am using Pidgin 2.10.12 (libpurple 2.10.12)

Thank you,
Andrei

file transfer question

2018-07-03 Thread caoyuanshangdema
hi all
I have encountered some problems while using Pidgin+Openfire??

There are two users A and B. Login A with Pidgin, and B with Spark. After set
in Account Management:
(1)Basic settings

 Protocol: xmmp
User_name: my_user_name
Domain: my_domain

 (2)Advance settings

Link Security:need to encrypt;

Link Port:5222;

Link Server:my_domain;

File Transfer Porxy:proxy.my_domain;

BOSH URL: empty;

(3) Proxy settings

Proxy Type:No Proxy(default);

User B(with Spark) could send file to A(with Pidgin), but when A send file to
B, B could get the message receive request, when i click the accept button, i
got error:File has an error during transmission??

When i login B with Psi+ w64, B can also get the message receice request ,
click accetp button, chose dir to save, finally got the error:

??unable to connect peer for data transfer.

Ensure that your Data Transfer settings are proper. If you are behind a NAT
router or firewall then you'llneed to open the proper TCP port or specify a
Data Transfer proxy in your account settings."

I change Proxy Type in "(3) PROXY settings" from "No Proxy" to ??Use global
proxy settings??, or change File Transfer Porxy in "(2)Advance settings" from
"proxy.my_domain" to ??proxy.eu.jabber.org??. It did not work.

Do you have any suggestions, look forwark you reply, best wishes.

Notification sounds question

2018-04-02 Thread tracy hartley
I used to hear the notification sound when someone was on my website, even
if it was me from my own computer. That suddenly stopped happening. I
didn't change anything -- it just stopped! I tried to preview the default
sound and it works perfectly ... but not when someone goes to my website.
I know people are going to my website because there's a contact form there
that people have filled out since I stopped hearing the notification sounds.

Is there something I need to change to make this work again?

New user- Font color question

2017-12-15 Thread Ashley McDowell
I would like to save frequently used font colors for later use so I'm not
having to try and re-find the exact color on the color ring. I've noticed
in the rectangle white box below the ring it states "The color you've
chosen. You can drag this color to a palette entry to save it for use in
the future."

Now I'm not seeing where I'm supposed to drag the color too. I can't find
an option for a "palette entry."

Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

Yes you can join group chats for both those services without needing a web

Hi Cesar,

This probably means you're using gnutls as your ssl plugin. You can
double-check through the Help->Build Information screen to see if NSS or Gnutls
is enabled. You'll need to remove the gnutls plugin from
/usr/purple-2/ssl-gnutls.so (or equivalent) to be able to switch to use NSS and
then use the NSS Configuration plugin.

Re: Question about using with Cisco IM

2016-12-06 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Cesar,

This probably means you're using gnutls as your ssl plugin. You can
double-check through the Help->Build Information screen to see if NSS or
Gnutls is enabled. You'll need to remove the gnutls plugin from
/usr/purple-2/ssl-gnutls.so (or equivalent) to be able to switch to use NSS
and then use the NSS Configuration plugin.

Cheers,
Eion

Re: Logging Question

2016-06-04 Thread Eion Robb
Hi Paul,

Have a look in Tools->Preferences->Logging and make sure that the 'Log all
instant messages' is enabled, otherwise no IM's will get logged. Just to
reiterate, the logs are in %appdata%\.purple\logs which you can paste
into the Windows Explorer address bar or the Start->Run command; no
searching needed.

If it's easier, Pidgin has a built-in log viewer that you can access by
right-clicking on a buddy and choosing "View Log". From there, there's a
"Browse Logs Folder" button that will take you directly to the folder where
that chat log is stored.

Cheers,
Eion

Question for problem with certificate pidgin

2015-09-17 Thread Manuel

Hello I need support to configure pidgin, we are using XMPP protocol to
connect to a openfire server.

When I tried to connect pidgin send the message --> "Unable to validate
certificate"

"The certificate for jabber.policia.rionegro.gov.ar could not be
validated. The certificate chain presented is invalid"

I tried to copy the certificate from other PC that work (with old pidgin
version) on my computer but the message is the same.

I think with old version of pidgin work rigth.

We use Ubuntu mate 14 and pidgin 2.10.9

It is possible to install a old version of pidgin on my operating system.

I suspect that your Openfire server's SSL/TLS certificate is self-signed
(not verified by an outside authority). You have to either tell users to
accept the invalid certificate or get a CA-signed certificate:

https://www.igniterealtime.org/builds/openfire/docs/latest/documentation/ssl-guide.html

For what it's worth, this is expected behavior and is is not a bug in
Pidgin.

[solved] Re: perl plugin newbie question

2014-11-14 Thread Johnson Earls

Hey folks,

I figured this out. The plugin from which I copied the receiving-chat-msg
callback
code had no idea what the parameters were actually supposed to be.

FWIW, the solution to changing the message flags in the receiving-chat-msg
callback is:

sub receiving_chat_msg_cb {
my ($account, $sender, $message, $conv, $flags) = @_;
...
$flags |= ... ;
...
$_[4] = $flags;
return 0;
}

the flags can be found in libpurple/conversation.h in the pidgin source code.

Did you have the plugin pack installed before? There are some IRC
support plugins in there that change the behaviour a bit.

Latest version is 2.7.0, I think there's a link from the Pidgin site.

Pidgin is intended for use with, typically pre-existing, third party
server systems, of many different kinds. You will need to contact the
supplier of the system you intend to use.

Most people setting up internal servers use XMPP based servers. As far
as I know, XMPP doesn't provide end to end encryption.

Pidgin also supports Apple's Bonjour protocol, on a single broadcast
area. That doesn't use servers. I don't know what security features it
has, and therefore if it is possible to monitor. However, if it does
provide encryption, it will be intrinsically end to end.

I assume that your requirement is that the system be insecure as far as
the teachers are concerned. There are, I believe, Pidgin plugins that
try to make such systems end to end secure, but you would see the
resulting encrypted data, even if you couldn't decipher it.

There are generally a lot more questions on this list from people trying
to prevent intelligence gathering by central authorities, than trying to
allow it, although the financial services industry does have that sort
of requirement.

Once it has found the buddy in the list, you have to hit ESC or Enter

inherent to the GTK runtime that is used by Pidgin.

 Jeff,

Are you inquiring about CTRL+F on the buddy list or conversation window?
 Windows OS?

If you're speaking about the buddy list, it works for me in 2.10.7. What
version are you running?

Once it has found the buddy in the list, you have to hit ESC or Enter
afterward. If you don't, mouse and arrow navigation of the buddy list is
blocked (a pet peeve of mine, but I deal with it). I believe this is
inherent to the GTK runtime that is used by Pidgin.

libpurple license question

2013-10-04 Thread Kriel, Aileen J.
Hi,

We are evaluating libpurple for an application we are developing here at
Goldman Sachs. We like libpurple and would like to use it for our app, but
its GPL licensing presents challenge with our firm's policy. We'd like to
find out if there is any alternative licensing you can offer for the product?

If this is not the right email group to pose the question, could you please
direct us to the right person for this inquiry?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks,
Aileen

For better or worse, a change in licensing isn't an option.

There are several copyright owners who are unwilling to agree to a license
change.
Even if that weren't the case, the number of copyright owners makes it
impractical to attempt re-licensing.

I am surprised that it needs to be installed separately. Currently I am
using JITSI for my secure communication. One of the reasons I installed
PIDGIN is that I am looking to use TAILS and TAILS includes a default
installation of PIDGIN. In this context, I have expected that OTR would be
an integral part of PIDGIN. Not only it isn't part of the PIDGIN

What kind of comments are you looking for? And why did you restate all
of John's response to you as a new email thread?

We do not maintain a lot of plugins as part of Pidgin. OTR in
particular has a community of efforts to bring OTR support to various IM
clients, many of which do not ship the feature directly.

We have considered a relationship with the OTR plugin developers, which
has been discussed on the development mailing list[1] and our
tracker[2], but nothing is finalized yet.

Re: Question about a new feature

2013-07-03 Thread 1 2
I know how to save all my logs I've done it several times now. My councern was
that I have verry much files to transfer.
I was looking for some way to move almost all files in one bigger file and the
logs to be accessible.

In theory I see the problem like this: instead of having a separate file for
each separate conversation (10-15 files/id/day), I want to have something like
1 file/id/period of time (I should specify, maybe 1 month). I store also time
in the log files and have them in txt format.

I'm sorry to hear that your OS and/or backup program is so limited.
Unfortunately, this is not something that Pidgin handles, or should
handle.  The way Pidgin logs are stored, this is trivially handled by
an external program, and that would be our recommendation for this
case.  If you were on a Unix system you could handle this with a cron
job and a five line shell script.  On Windows, I don't know how you
would accomplish the same thing, but I am sure there is a way.

In the vein of Ethan's response, a .bat file can be trivially written to do this
on Windows, like so:

    @echo off
:: adjust these paths as appropriate
    set logdir=%APPDATA%\.purple
    set archivedir=C:\archive

    cd %logdir%

:: Comment out the line for the log format you DON'T use
    forfiles /d -31 /m *.html /c cmd /c move @file %archivedir%
    forfiles /d -31 /m *.txt /c cmd /c move @file %archivedir%

(Note to Windows XP users:  forfiles is not part of the OS.  Get it from the
resource kit or from a Windows Server 2003 system.)

Schedule the task to run as desired.  Server 2008's new task scheduler adds some
scheduling features that finally make it match cron's flexibility on UNIX-like
systems.

Not unless Microsoft change their licensing policy for Skype, or release
the protocol specification into the public domain (it is currently a
trade secret, protected against reverse engineering by encryption).
(That is public domain for the knowledge - the specification document

We don't know.

To expand on that, Microsoft have never approved the use of Pidgin, or
any other open source software, to access the MSN service. They have
therefore not provided any information to the Pidgin developers as to
how the transition to Skype will be achieved, and in particular, whether
or not the existing interface will be retained.

Because of reasons to do with licensing of the Skype libraries and the
trade secret, and encrypted nature of the Skype protocols, official
support for Skype will not happen within the foreseeable future.

Your MSN credentials should become valid for Skype, but will require the
use of the official Skype client. (I don't know if the non-Windows
Skype clients have been maintained across the transition.)

question regarding history plugin

2013-01-10 Thread Peng Shao
Hi. I am using pidgin-2.10.6 in KDE-4.9.5/Arch-x86_64 and I have a
little question regarding
the history plugin (I am using msn-pecan but I think this issue occurs
no matter what the protocol

is being used):

If I had a long conversation including say more than 200 messages and
won't fit in a single
chat page so naturally there is a scroll bar to allow me to move between
lines to review them.
Now if I enable History plugin and close the chat window, then when a
new message is received
from my contact, the new chat window will pop up with the _oldest_
historical message displayed
at the _top_ of the chat window. Since the conversation is too long,
the latest message is hidden and to view
it I had to scroll down the chat window to the bottom, which is really
inconvenient.

If I disable the History plugin, then no matter how long the old
conversation is, the pop-up chat
window will show the latest message at the bottom so there is no need to
scroll down/up.

Is the behavior of the History plugin I encountered normal, or did I
have a bug?

Thanks.

Pidgin's philosophy has been to blur the lines between protocols to

you can enable the protocol icon in the information area at the top of
each conversation (and in the buddy list) via Buddies Show Protocol
 Icons.

Pidgin's philosophy has been to blur the lines between protocols to
provide a more unified experience, which is why the icons are hidden by
 default.

Pidgin Help/Question

2012-11-01 Thread Name Here
I'm rather new to Pidgin, but I use it extensively as of late because it takes
up much less space than MSN and other clients. But I use multiple accounts, and
on each account I tend to have a different text colour. With Pidgin, this means
I have to reset my colour each time a new chat window opens, going through the
wheel and finding it again. Is there any way (or maybe a plugin?) that I can
have a colour for each account individually?

I believe it should be doable using a plugin. However, I'm not sure that such a
plugin exists. If you are a programmer, then you can write one yourself using
the API. If not, then you can pay or convince someone else to write it for you.

I should note that I am a programmer, and I would be interested to do this for

I can't provide you a solution on that, only say that in the past I would put

It wasn't elegant, but served its purpose.

Re: Pidgin Implementation question

2012-10-24 Thread Tres Finocchiaro
Jeff,

From my experience with *all *published Citrix applications is that Windows
applications generally work pretty well but may take some tweaking.

I would strongly suggest installing and piloting this in your environment
before deciding that it is a viable solutions.

Since Pidgin was originally designed for a Unix environment, multiple
simultaneous users is built into it's design, so you should be ok, but as
you probably know Citrix has it's own caveats when publishing an
application through the metaframe or through the web interface.

If you are very luckly, there may be someone on this mailing list with
experience, but you may get more traction on a Citrix forum or blog that
could have more specialized exposure to this specific setup.

Question on minimizing / closing in Windows 7

2012-07-31 Thread Lynne Seamans
I could have sworn that it used to be, if I minimized pidgin, it went to my
taskbar, but if I hit the X for close, it wound up in my systray. That is
the behavior I would prefer - and maybe I remember incorrectly, but that's what
I do think used to happen.

Can't seem to get it back - Windows 7, pidgin 2.10.4

Now what happens is minimize goes to taskbar, and close, well, closes and I
have to restart. Can't get to tray at all, and in tools - preferences -
System Tray Icon, I have Always selected.

Thanks for any pointers

What if the hacker decides to send indecent pictures out via file
transfer, or sends dirty messages, will you disable those features as well?

A better approach might be to avoid having your accounts compromised,
and when it happens, to deal with it as quickly and appropriately as
possible.

There's no way to disable avatars.

I agree. If you like to use IM inside you company, why do you rely on
ICQ/AIM? Did you every read the terms of usage of these services?

You could set up your own Jabber/XMPP-Server or using bonjour.

Re: Question

2012-07-20 Thread Ethan Blanton
Mark Palen spake unto us the following wisdom:
We are in a corporate environment and use Pidgin for those of us who
want to IM. We had an incident where one of our lady's AIM account
was hacked and the avatar was replaced with a very indecent picture.
When she sent an IM to others within the office this picture came up

Pidgin has worked very well for us, however, is there any way to block
 the avatar?

First of all, I apologize for the unhelpful responses from the peanut
gallery. This is a public mailing list, and sometimes users get too
zealous.

There are two things you can try. Both will require running a cleanup
script on every host that has the icon. If you couple this with
changing her actual online icon to something not indecent, it should
take care of your problems.

The first (easier) method is this:

1) Find a copy of the icon, or else find a user who has the
   indecent icon in their Pidgin

2a) If you found a copy of the icon, get its SHA-1 checksum; the
'sha1sum' command will do this on most Linux boxes, 'shasum'
on OS X. Call this checksum for the following instructions.

2b) If you found a buddy list that contains the icon, search for
the affected user's username in the buddy list in
~/.purple/blist.xml. You should see something like this:

buddy account='Ethan Blanton' proto='prpl-aim'
nameAffectedBuddy/name
aliasAffected Buddy/alias
setting name='last_seen' type='int'1319733408/setting
setting name='buddy_icon'
type='string'd8159b2f6217e8833e1eab4ee7cee4dd8e81a8ca.jpg/setting
setting name='icon_checksum'
type='string'd8159b2f6217e8833e1eab4ee7cee4dd8e81a8ca/setting
/buddy

Find the checksum of the buddy icon in the setting with the
attribute name='icon_checksum'. In this case, the checksum is
d8159b2f6217e8833e1eab4ee7cee4dd8e81a8ca. Call this
checksum for the following instructions.

3) On each computer that has cached the offending icon, remove
   ~/.purple/icons/checksum.jpg.

The second, slightly more complicated method (more complicated only
because it requires doing more than a single file deletion on the
hosts that have the offending icon) requires parsing
~/.purple/icons/blist.xml on each user's account, and removing the
icon you find marked there. If we call the user with the bad icon
username, you want to find the following XML item (in XPath
notation) in blist.xml:

/purple/blist/group/contact/buddy[@proto=prpl-aim and
name=username]/setting[@name=buddy_icon]

The value of this node is the name of a file in ~/.purple/icons.
Remove that file, and the offending icon will be gone.

All icon deletions (whichever method you choose) need to be done when
the local Pidgin is not running, or Pidgin may just restore the icon
the next time it gets an update over the network.

In both cases, you need to have the affected user change her icon to
something non-offensive, or these hosts will just re-fetch it when
they fetch their buddy lists again.

If you have lost control of the affected AIM account completely ... I
dunno. We can't block individual icons.

The peanut gallery advice on NOT using free public corporate IM
servers for business functions is good advice. There are numerous
open source XMPP servers, you may wish to look into using one.
