SeaMonkey 2.48 is still being developed. Thus, crashes might be
expected. Report them at so
that the developers can fix them before 2.48 is released to end-users.

That might not do any good, as there is no SeaMonkey 2.48 from the
SeaMonkey Project.

Nightly is 2.50a1

Aurora is 2.49a2

Beta is 2.46

Release is 2.46

According to the minutes of the 10 January 2017 SeaMonkey Status
Meeting, the next release is 2.48. See
.

I know, and they don't even have a Beta build yet. Wonder what the
reason for that is, or did I just miss it at:

Maybe they are waiting for next weeks merges, when 2.50a1 becomes
2.51a1, 2.49a2 becomes 2.50a2, 2.4?b(x) should be 2.49b1 and release
would be 2.48. 

Well, Firefox Beta merged to release today, so 51.0rc should be out
tomorrow. Isn't that what 2.48 is based on?

It's already there.

Go to File-->New-->Private_Window.
To open a bookmark or link in a private window,
right-click-->Open_in_a_Private_Window.

Just a problem.
We can right-click -> open in a private window on a link present in
a web page opened by the browser.
BUT we cannot right-click -> open in a private window on a link
present in a mail nor in a post of a newsgroup.

Can't have a link in Thunderbird open in a private window with
Firefox either.

But we have "Open in a New Window" so... why not the "Open in a
Private window" option ?

What if you are currently using a private window?

Answering my own question here:

Clicking a link in email or a newsgroup will open a normal window from
Thunderbird. The context menu items in Thunderbird are "Open Link in
Browser", "Copy Link Location" and "Save Link As...".

If I used a private window, I could use "Copy Link Location" and paste
it into the address bar of the private window.

I suspect SeaMonkey is similar.
YES BUT SeaMonkey is a mail/newsgroup reader AND a browser, so I don't
understand why right-clicking will not give me the "Open in a private
window" option.
I say that because right-clicking on a link in a mail give me the "Open
in a new window" option.

It's not there because SeaMonkey Mail uses shared MailNews Core code
with Thunderbird and that code doesn't have it, is my best guess.

Then again maybe it's shared Core code.

Or one of the other components.

Not the same thing.

Checking for updates and notifying the user doesn't install anything.

If you want to disable automatic updating, the box to uncheck is
"Automatically download and install the update."

I concur that wel-behaved installers should check system requirements,
compatibility, etc. before running. In the real world, developers can't
think of everything. And the older the user's HW and SW, the more
initiative he/she should take in this area.

Thank you. I'll be honest, this is the first time since Netscape 1.0
that an update has failed so disastrously. This really scares me, since
I don't know what I'd do without SeaMonkey.

Yep. I've been using Sea Monkey since Mozilla abandoned its predecessor
the Mozilla Suite and never had problems other than maybe a minor one
occasionally when upgrading. Upgrade to 2.46 was a disaster on my
default profile but ok on a newish profile with only two extensions. I
can't understand why we were not warned that no checking of extension
compatibility with this version would be done and that NO extensions
being used that were converted via LemonJuice's SeaMonkey extension
converter would work and that disaster would ensue if we tried to update
without first uninstalling all converted extensions. I'm left
wondering why SeaMonkey is being continued since it is now Fx and no
point in it.

I did not use an automatic update. I prefer to get the new installer
and install manually. I have not had problems with extensions, and most
of mine have been converted or tweaked to install into SeaMonkey. I
also have a habit of changing the max version for SeaMonkey in
install.rdf to 3.0 to stop the add-on from being marked incompatible.

No matter what I switched to for search in preferences, duckduckgo came

I went to the screen under search engine precedence, and moved
duckduckgo down to last. It still came up as my search engine.

Finally, I deleted it from the list of available search engines under
preferences and that got rid of it (for that user profile in SM).

Reading up on this subject, it appears I may have updated or installed
something, and didn't see a box checked to make duckduckgo my default
search engine (my bad). But there isn't a good explanation how to get
rid of it completely (says to uninstall the app but doesn't give a good
idea what that app is).

I notice my other SM profiles still come up with duckduckgo as search
engine. Any ideas (besides deleting that as an available search engine
in each profile)?

Running SM 2.46, W10, adblock plus, noscripts, and Norton Security Suite.

If I change the search engine in the search bar on my toolbar, SeaMonkey
uses that search engine with search terms in the address bar and with
selecting something on a page, and searching for that.

No you seem to be missing the point. You did not need to create a new
profile and "lose" your data just by uninstalling SeaMonkey and
reinstalling the previous version.

The issue of backing up is just a given! One should always have a backup
strategy. And since the downgrade does not corrupt your whole profile,
only the very limited scope of your browsing history, I mentioned how
your could restore most of that with your backup.

The original (and more important) question is -- is "shouldn't SeaMonkey check
System Requirements before automatically updating?"

I thought it did. Folks have posted issues where the newest version
would not install on Windows with CPUs sans SSE2. Maybe this is a Mac
quirk...

Disable automatic updating. In Preferences > Advanced > Software

Thank you in advance. :)

It's already there.

Go to File-->New-->Private_Window.
To open a bookmark or link in a private window,
right-click-->Open_in_a_Private_Window.

Just a problem.
We can right-click -> open in a private window on a link present in a
web page opened by the browser.
BUT we cannot right-click -> open in a private window on a link
present in a mail nor in a post of a newsgroup.

Can't have a link in Thunderbird open in a private window with Firefox
either.

But we have "Open in a New Window" so... why not the "Open in a Private
window" option ?

What if you are currently using a private window?

Answering my own question here:

Clicking a link in email or a newsgroup will open a normal window from
Thunderbird. The context menu items in Thunderbird are "Open Link in
Browser", "Copy Link Location" and "Save Link As...".

If I used a private window, I could use "Copy Link Location" and paste
it into the address bar of the private window.

I suspect SeaMonkey is similar.

I don't see a problem to open a link in a private window if the page is
already in a private window.
If a click on a link present in a private window ... it will be opened
in the same private window.
BUT if I choose "Open in a new window" this window will be a normal
window or a private window ?

Normal window.

Please don't hijack threads, start a new one with the new subject line.

This issue has been discussed thoroughly, with solutions, in relevant
threads. Just look.

On my 64 bit Optiplex 780, Win7-Pro, SM 2.40, I loaded uBlock Origin as
an 'add on'.

One of the things I don't understand is that I am required to enable
uBlock Origin every time I open SeaMonkey. If I don't specifically
enable uBlock Origin, it seems to remain inoperative.

I have never seen an 'add on' before that had to be constantly
re-enabled. Is this normal behaviour for uBlock Origin?

Many thanks, in advance, for any enlightenment.

will soon be inherent in SeaMonkey.

By default, SeaMonkey disables plugins in mailnews anyway. ;)

You can enable it in Edit-->Preferences-->Advanced-->Scripts_&_Plugins.

I've just done that, so will see what happens when I boot up again
tomorrow ... Oh, wait, it's tomorrow already! ;-)
