There wasn't a 2.50, 2.51 or 2.52.

The release notes for 2.48 also say in big red letters.

"Automatic upgrades from previous versions are, for most configurations,
disabled for this release. Please download the full installer from the
downloads section and install SeaMonkey 2.49.1 manually over the
previous version."

REF:

That is also in the current release notes for SeaMonkey 2.53.3.

The trick is to find the release notes and *read* them before installing
a new version.

Reading the first post in the announcement thread and following the 2nd
link is a good start.

Maybe you could suggest to Edmund that the links be posted this way.

You MUST absolutely do a full backup of your profile before using

I never saw anything like this on previous versions.

A similar wording was in all previous releases notes starting with

Is it something to be REALLY concerned with?

Not much if you are upgrading from 2.53.2 and have no language pack

Trouble is, I'm not sure which files I need to restore from the

Can anyone tell me what files I need to copy over? Thanks.

Along with logins.json, you also need the decryption keys.  I have
both key3.db and key4.db in my profile.

Thanks for that. I have both, I'll try that.

What files are needed for the bookmarks now? I'd hate to have to try and
rebuild that collection - it goes back years

Copying over places.sqlite should put back the bookmarks. You could
probably also copy over the bookmark backups as well.

:)  Found it - there are two other files places.sqlite-shm and -wal.
Missed them the first time. Copied them over and I've got the bookmarks
back as well.

I thought those were temporary files created while the SQLite database
is open, and deleted when it's closed. So if they're there it might
indicate that you had SeaMonkey running when you copied the profile, or
perhaps it had crashed. I usually close SeaMonkey while copying /
backing up the profile, to help ensure everything is captured in a
consistent state.

Apart from one email account which is timing out, everything is now
working. I'll have to check that mail server, but otherwise things are
back to normal. Liking the new version so far. If nothing else, a fresh
profile gets me a few things I've not seen.

Great. At least you got it sorted in the end.

As far as I know this was always the case. I just tried with 2.49.5. Do you
