One more thing to check, someone mentioned marking old messages as read,
you don't by any chance have view->threads set to "threads with unread"
do you? If so you will not see the threads marked read even though they
are still there.

Yeah, I checked that too.

Grasping at straws, but I often wish for more options in this area, much like
message filters. In particular I want:

1 - show threads if I have posted to them
2 - show threads if any post tagged XX
(I tag questions I will answer if someone else doesn't)

After that I'm out of ideas.

DOH! Yes, v2.12. Sorry. Dang versions confusing me! Ugh. :(

I seem to recall that when you set up a NG account, you specify a time
(several days to several weeks) after which messages will expire and be
automatically marked as read.

What I think you are experiencing is that you are downloading all the
headers from the newsgroup server and, as all the messages in the group
are old, they are being marked as read.

I cannot find where this time limit is set, maybe someone else will
drop
by with that info!!

Isn't this the same one as shown in each news server (right click ->
Settings -> Synchronization & Storage)?

Ant, both you and Ed Mullen have directed me to the same placeeven
if by different methods, and I believe this *is* *not* the setting I am
referring to, as I read the settings on that screen to apply *only* if I
wanted to download the news group posts that I want so I could read them
whilst off-line (which I did do when I was using dial-up a connection),
whereas you are talking about things happening whilst you are still
on-line, aren't you??

Don't know where that setting is!! Just sitting here, I'm thinking the
setting I'm talking about is tied up with the File->Get New Messages and
File->Get next xxx messages settings!

How does your settings screen compare to this?

http://edmullen.net/temp/capmn.jpg

Yes, Ed, my screen is similar to your image, and now, after reading
WaltS's post, I can see that, maybe, possibility, most likely, you can
set the expire time.

In the past, I've considered this *only* as part of the "downloading to
view offline" settings (i.e. "Diskspace" setting, and if I'm not
downloading the messages, this setting does not apply!!)!!

I don't use offline usage.

What does that have to do with the settings under "To recover disk
space, old messages can be permanently deleted"?

I don't use offline storage either.

I have my SeaMonkey, and Thunderbird applications set to "Delete
messages more than 30 days". I see the message headers deleted if they
are older than 30 days.

Your choices are:

Wasn't that covered in F1?

I am aware of that, but in the older SeaMonkey versions like v2.0.14, it
didn't purge them until AFTER I visited the newsgroup and not before.
Basically, I want the old behavior. :(

So what was your setting in the older version of SeaMonkey?

To keep only the last few days.

What is your setting now?

Same.

How long do you wait until you visit a newsgroup?

I download, and then either go quickly or wait for a while.

What newsgroup(s)? What news server(s)?

Here, Giganews, etc.

Are you sure it isn't the server removing them?

No, because I do a repair and I redownload the posts/threads that I am in.

I would think setting "Don't delete any messages", would be a good
starting point.

But I don't want to keep older than XX days I specified. However, not
right away right after I downloaded them.

AFTER I read the newsgroup like in v2.0.14 and earlier?

8/eight days. :(
