If you open the bookmarks manager window, you can pick a folder and
rearrange its contents into any order you choose by dragging and
dropping the files into place. Click on an item, keep holding the mouse
button and drag it to whatever position you want, then let go of the button.

No, you selected View | Sort. That only changes the appearance of the
list in the Bookmarks window at that time.

You should right-click the folder name and then choose "Sort By Name". I
wish there were more sort options, in particular I could use sort by

Install SearchEverything or something similar.

W7 indexing is turned off. Too much of a system drag for me.

Aha. I mistook "S.E" for "(the) search engine," presumably the Win7 one.

places.sqlite is a binary database blob (file) of type sqlite.
http://sqlitebrowser.org/ is home of an app available to do things with it, but
whether you could do any sorting and keep it compatible with SM, or at all, I
have no idea.

All may not be lost.
I experience a problem nominally unrelated to "sorting".
It may suggest thought paths "outside the box" that creative souls might
exploit.

My problem is accumulation of bookmarks over too many years.
They were categorized in ways that made sense *AT THAT TIMES* ;/

Now? "Hodgepodge" implies too much organization.
I've been experimenting with a sequence of :
  1. Export bookmarks in HTML
  2. Massage HTML representation
  3. Import tweaked HTML

The results to date have *NOT*:
  1. persuaded me to give up.
  2. encouraged me to publish anything.

IOW Does anyone have spare 96 hour days for 70 day weeks ?
YMMV

I am not sure, but I think the Sort option under View only affects the
current display and not the places.sqlite database.

Consider:
* Most state mandate that drivers have liability insurance.
* Employers are mandated to have worker's compensation insurance.
* If you live in a flood zone, flood insurance is mandatory.
* If your home has a mortgage, fire insurance is mandatory.

Why then is mandatory health insurance so bad??

Sort of Bookmarks will not save (remain) SM 2.46 Win's 7

2017-06-08 Thread DoctorBill

One of my most used bookmark folders needs sorting A>Z.
So I click Ctrl-B, go to that folder, then to Edit | Sort and click Sort
by Name (or)

A>Z and the list becomes sorted..great !
THEN, I go back to the SeaMonkey main window (desktop?) and click
Bookmarks Toolbar

and click on the folder I just sorted.
BAM ! Same as before ! The "sort" didn't stay, stick, remain - get
saved.

What am I doing wrong. Used to work with earlier SM's. Have I missed a
step ?
