Re: upgrade Seamonkey 1.1.7 to 2.0.2

2010-01-31 Thread Klaus Weber
Very likely the reason why a part of my mails have been distorted is not
the upgrade to 2.0.2 but an unsuccessful partition operation I made a
few weeks ago.

Certainly a high price.

Unless you have installed 2.0.x *over* 1.1.x (that is, right in the
same folder), there is no reason that should happen as it uses a
totally different profile. It simply copies the necessary data from
1.1.x to create a brand new 2.0.x profile

Now if you have installed everything over in the same folder, that is
a whole other story and a simple case of PEBKAC.

S.
As I mentioned I moved all the mails to another partition and
uninstalled and deleted S 1.1.8, leaving documents and settings
untouched. Then I installed 2.0.2 under c:/programs/seamonkey. It is
interesting that seemingly only a few mail files are distorted (only
the content but not the Re., sender and date) even though they have
been imported all in one stroke. Is there a possibility to restore the
mails? They become visible when I use a far east coding (e.g. chinese
below)

worked well. Certainly quite a dirty method.
Formerly on my notebook the upgrade was much easier. But somehow I could
not do it the same way this time.

The fact you found it tricky may have something to do if you don't
use the default locations for SeaMonkey and/or local folders?

I have reason to believe that in many cases, but other reasons may
also be a not so good previously maintenance of the OS.
After a few windows crashes I found it to be a good rule to save data
not on the system partition but on a separate partition, better even on
a separate hard disk. Unfortunately I could not find a simple
possibility to move also documents settings to another partition.

Well, there are a few tools and tutorials out there that claim to do
that. However, I never liked the idea of messing with the basic settings
of a system post-install -- too much room for it going spectacularly wrong.

A better approach, I think, is to do it *during initial setup*. nLite
(http://www.nliteos.com) is free and allows you to create a customized
XP setup disk, changing a lot of parameters -- including the default
location (and even names) of system directories. I did it when I
reinstalled XP a few years ago, and it worked without a hitch.

If you have Vista, there's a sister project called vLite
(http://www.vlite.net) that should be able to do the same. I never
personally tested it, though, so I can't give personal experience on this.

Details, Jim, details...what happens when you try to upgrade from SM
Ver 1.1.7 to Ver 2.0.2??

Have you tried upgrading from Ver 1.1.7 to Ver 2.0.0, then when you
have that working tried upgrading to 2.0.1 and then to 2.0.2??
