Re: [Sursound] Renting a TetraMic or other ambisonic mic

2016-01-22 Thread John Leonard
Just a quick caveat:

I did this for an immersive video thing to do with the Olympics on a boat down
the Thames. The end result (audio, that is) was phenomenally boring. Basically,
what I got was engine noise and a bit of water sloshing by. Nothing to do with
the mic, everything to do with the fact that this particular boat engine was
really noisy.

The mic (ST450 in this case) was mounted as high as we could get it on the roof
of the boat, but still, mainly engine noise. The only interesting bits were
when we went under a bridge or two and the helicopter doing the rehearsal for
Her Majesty The Queen’s parachute jump into the Olympic stadium.

You will need a really good shock-mount and a really good windshield, otherwise
all you’ll get is rumble and wind-blast.

Can we do pictures here? If so, here are a couple of the set-up. We also had
five MKH416s arranged in around the boat as a sort-of wide 5.0 system.
Manfrotto Magic arms and SuperClamps were invaluable.

Best of luck, I hope yours turns out better than mine…

[Sursound] Renting a TetraMic or other ambisonic mic

2016-01-22 Thread Billy Wirasnik
Hi everyone,

Does anyone rent or know who rent ambisonic microphones in the Greater
Boston Area? I'm finding that typical rental houses have nothing in the
form of surround microphones.

I'm filming a 10hr ride down the Hudson River in real time and would
ideally have a surround recording of the experience.

Cheers,

Billy

Re: [Sursound] Renting a TetraMic or other ambisonic mic

2016-01-22 Thread John Leonard
That’s my ST450 in the pictures and I believe that my Rycote & Windjammer set
up for it is the prototype for the current system. It does indeed work well.

If you’re using a TetraMic, you’ll definitely need something similar.

I suppose it depends on what you’re trying to achieve with the recording and
what sort of vessel you’re sailing in, whether the engine sound becomes boring
or a mere annoyance. I was mostly stuck below decks with the recording kit, so
didn’t have much to look at except meters.

Once again, best of luck with the session.

Regards,

John
