[Biofuel] Herbal Garden Sprays

2007-02-11 Thread Thomas Kelly
Hello All,
I've been reading the organic gardening/farming/composting areas on JTF.
They are great places to visit on cold winter days. One of the links had
recipes for herbal garden sprays. One of the ingredients for an insect spray is
liquid paraffin. It seems to have many synonyms, one of which is mineral oil.

Are liquid paraffin and mineral oil the same thing?

What is the reason for adding paraffin wax? (I'm concerned that it may be
harmful to the beneficial insects that I try to encourage in the garden.)

Seems like it's a shame that if they have working models that our
Government has stood back and let them struggle with such limited
financing. For a Texas Company to have to go up to Canada
and beg some (nice) but nickle and dime Auto Company to get involved
speaks volumes about the politics involved.
If this pans out there should be be a whole lot of shame.

One drawback is the -4 degrees F limit which may require insulation
and a warmer in certain applications.

Guess it's either snake oil or going to lead to a lot less
dependence on Terrorist Oil. Big US Corporations can't stop it now.
Ha,ha,ha. I love it.

Perhaps that's why they Had to get Canada into the act.
I'm no expert but my personal view is that Canada doesn't sell their
own people down the drain over a Buck very easily.
Last I heard they might not have as deluxe of a big money health
network as the US does - but then again they aren't throwing people
out on the street to die over no insurance either.
Big buck system only works if you have the bucks.
Health Insurance is so crooked now that you can't trust that either.
Cost a fellow I know $380,000 to be saved. He didn't want 4th rate
Surgeons and facilities so he went out of network.
Usual and Customary was $77,000 the Insurance company says.
The other $303,000 was on him.

[Biofuel] Biodiesel guy: More Reasons to Avoid Potato Chips

2007-02-11 Thread D. Mindock
This is a very interesting letter that Dr. Mercola received from a reader about
America's favorite fried junk food: potato chips.

http://www.mercola.com/2007/feb/10/more-reasons-to-avoid-potato-chips.htm
More Reasons to Avoid Potato Chips

One of our readers works with a company that converts used vegetable oils to
biodiesel fuel. He read the potato chip article in the January 20 newsletter.
His inside information will make you want to avoid potato chips even more.

After speaking with potato chip manufacturers, I would like to comment on
potato chips, and I hope this is a working email for you.

My company is researching the production of biodiesel from used vegetable oil,
and has contacted manufacturers which we suspected would produce the most waste
oil. What comes to mind? Well, greasy potato chips (just look at your fingers
after you eat them!) and donuts came to mind, after contacting the obvious
home-run hitters, McDonald's and KFC.

Contrary to what you might think, it seems the worst abusers of vegetable oils
were not McDonald's, but potato chip and donut manufacturers.

One manufacturer replied to my offer to purchase their used oil with the
explanation that they hardly have any used oil left-over after the process.
Tens of thousands of gallons come in, barely hundreds come out.

The reason? This manufacturer recycles the oil until it is entirely absorbed by
the food. All that dirty oil eventually ends up in the potato chips themselves.

One problem that occurs after re-using vegetable oils is that FFA's (free fatty
acids) concentrate. The manufacturer volunteered this fact and noted that their
solution is to chemically treat the oil to reduce the FFA's, after which it is
sent back to produce more potato chips. Mmmm -- re-used vegetable oil treated
with chemicals to reduce free fatty acids!

It turns out that these oils are so bad that biodiesel manufacturers shun them!
In other words, they are difficult to catalyze into methyl-esters (biodiesel)
and producers are reluctant to use them for engine fuel, yet people still eat
the potato chips!

That brings us to the last time I ate a donut, those nicely-colored sweet
confections. If you only saw the waste products. My offer to pick up one donut
shop's used oil for free was met by much enthusiasm by the management, and they
told me that I could pick up a 55-gallon drum once every 6 months.

Did you ever go inside the donut shop and look at how much oil they have in
those vats? Now consider that they only dispose of 55 gallons every 6 months!
They would have given me more if they had it because I offered to pick it up
for free, while they have to pay a renderer over $ 200 / month for disposal.

One closed-down shop asked me to pick up their barrel of used vegetable oil
from their parking lot because it was leaking and causing ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE.
I tried to drain the oil out, but it was so thick and sludgy that it clogged my
pump. I was considering using a heavy-duty sewage pump to drain it, but decided
not to, because the thick, smelly contents of that barrel were not usable as an
ingredient for fuel, and refining it would be too expensive.

The material had an uncanny resemblance to sewage. The only reason I knew it
wasn't, was that it had a sweet, donut-like smell to it, but entirely
unpleasant.

Scientific facts like knowing the carcinogen content of these foods is
interesting, but if you want real motivation to avoid junk foods, go to the
back of the restaurant were they dispose of their environmentally-harmful
by-product and take a look. Also, you can ask them why they have to keep the
stuff in barrels and wait for an expensive disposal service instead of just
sending it down the drain?

The reason: the Environmental Protection Agency does not allow it?

The utility companies know that one of the reasons that raw sewage leaks out of
the sewers and into our public water supply is that restaurants still illegally
dump their used oil down their sinks, causing build-up and clogs to occur. I
saw a picture of the clog once -- it looked like a blocked artery.

Go ahead, have another potato chip -- you are doing our environment a favor by
disposing of that garbage with your own internal garbage disposal system.
Your sink's garbage disposal system will wear out every five years and can be
replaced for about $80, but how will you replace your stomach, liver and
kidneys and arteries?

Regards,

Dennis Meizys

 Hi Keith,

Using wood waste to create bio-fuel will kill 2 environmental birds with
 one
stone. The air pollution from burning slash left over from logging
operations is causing health problems from poor air quality.
If we produce biofuel from the slash instead of burning it there will be 2
 benefits to the environment.

Let them eat grass...

Ooops, they're going to make ethanol out of all the grass too.

The ethanol production process can use grasses, woody plants, and
 wood waste, he said.

Anyone know where you can actually buy some cellulosic ethanol? Or
biodiesel from algae? LOL!

USDA Tells Ranchers Non-Corn Ethanol a Priority

US: February 5, 2007

NASHVILLE, Tenn., - US Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns assured US
cattle producers on Friday that the government will work hard to
encourage other ways of making ethanol to give them relief from high
corn prices.

The price of corn, an important cattle feed, have sped higher as more
of the grain goes to making the biofuel ethanol.

That is why the Farm Bill proposes a very strong federal commitment
to accelerating our research into cost-effective ways of producing
cellulosic ethanol from biomass, Johanns said during his address at
the convention here of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, the
largest US cattle group.

The ethanol production process can use grasses, woody plants, and
wood waste, he said.

The proposed 2007 Farm Bill released last week recommends US$1.6
billion in new funding over the next 10 years targeted at the
development of cellulosic ethanol. It also proposes US$2.1 billion in
guaranteed loans for cellulosic projects and construction of plants
in rural areas.

This constitutes a strong commitment to nailing down the knowledge
and building the infrastructure we must have to meet a much larger
share of our energy needs, said Johanns.

A US$500 million portion of that US$1.6 billion will be used for
grants to develop new energy sources, possibly methane gas from
livestock waste, he said.

All of that could be a part of this initiative, he said.

In a press conference following his speech, Johanns said he supported
exploring the use of sugar cane and sugar beets to make ethanol.

SOUTH KOREA FRUSTRATING

Reopening export markets for US beef has been a priority for the
NCBA. Overseas markets closed in December 2003 after the United
States reported its first case of mad cow disease.

Many markets have reopened, with some restricting the type of beef
they will accept. South Korea, once the third largest overseas buyer
of US beef, is one that remains closed.

Last year, South Korea lifted its ban on US beef, but tight
restrictions on bone chips and other material has prevented imports
from reaching consumers. The United States has been in talks to
restart beef sales to South Korea, and more talks are scheduled next
week.

The situation in Korea has been frustrating. I'm not giving up. Our
beef is safe and should be in Korea, said Johanns.

The beef issue has been a major barrier in establishing a bilateral
trade deal between the two countries.
