Mike,

Without doing any calculations, I can assure you that the process is 
wildly inefficient.  the question is how  much energy goes into 
manufacturing the  aluminum and NaOH. This is not to say that for some 
application, this is the simplest way to go. It is just energetically 
expensive.  Thermodynamics is one of those laws you can't break.

the reaction is  Al + 2 NaOH + 2 H2O -- 2 NaAlO2  + H2
