I"m not certain if I understand how you're suggesting to tie them together, physically or otherwise, but it's a thought. I'm pretty sure I read an article about a Mercedes on the Autobahn that is equipped with a new system to do some of the control (steering wheel, accelerator) for you, based on sensing some basics, like the car in front of you. I don't know how, if at all, the distance between cars is programmed to be different from what a human would be expected to maintain.
