When the discussion turned to what to do with navel rings under uniforms

According to the NHSF Case Book, they are legal, since they are not normally
visible (the case was about a hypothetical LJer whose singlet rose while in
the air).

I clerked one of the CT state indoor meets last month and had to tell at
least 25 per cent of the kids to remove ear rings, necklaces, etc. Many said
it was the first time they had heard of the rule.

Ironically, watches are legal since they are considered track equipment,
although it would seem to me that an athlete could gain an unfair advantage
from a watch, but not from a necklace.

t-and-f: Am I getting to old to coach? New rules in HS

2002-03-06 Thread Philip Weishaar

Am I looking at things wrong? Last night I went to our annual HS coaches rules
meeting. All Head Track Coaches of Boys and Girls HS and Middle schools and all
starters in the state of Kansas have to attend the rules meeting and pass a 100
question T or F test with a 90% each year.
New rules for the year are discussed. What a year for the Federation rules.
  1. All Head Coaches are to meet with the referee before the meet so he can ask us
if our athletes will
   a) display good sportsmanship at all times
   b) are legally equiped

  2. Now that the pole vault people got a bigger pit recommended the word is you
going to have to buy a cover that has a coaches box painted on it of a different
color for vaulters to aim to land in. We were told that one rules maker wanted to
make a vault unsuccessful if the vaulter's head and shoulders didn't land in the box.
I realize there is a great safety issue but do those half-pipe and aerial people have
all the same concerns and rules etc.
Oh and I LOVE this one. If you go to a meet and the host school doesn't have an
event facility that is safe all the coaches can get together and declare the event
over before it starts. All the team points will be divided equally between all
competitors except the host school which gets nothing.
Must have been somebody from New York or New Jersey who push that baby through.
Besides all this the IAAF Javelin comes on line this year and then out of the
blue they changed the Middle School Girls Shot Put back or down to 6lbs from 4K.
When the discussion turned to what to do with navel rings under uniforms I about quit
coaching.

Within this same discussion, WHAT IS JEWELRY? We were told that ANYTHING in
the hair except for a scrunchy is jewelry. This includes the obvious things
like bobby pins, clips, ribbons, and beads, but also such fun to enforce
things like hair extensions.

Also, one discussion centered around the idea that a tattoo could either be
considered jewelry or a multi-colored item under a jersey and must be
covered.

Can ANYONE make sense of this?

That has been a rule in Massachusetts for a long time - several decades. It
is primarily for the high jump and pole vault. I had to exercise this rule
a couple times when I was coaching 10 years ago. In one case, the pole
vault standards were bent about 3 feet inward so that many kids hit them on
the way up. In another, they only had two of the three high jump pads and I
refused my team's participation when a jumper in a warmup (from the other
team as I recall) flew cleanly over the pads without even brushing the it.
In both cases, the opposing coach did not complain at all and in fact
apologized profusely.

I think this rule makes good sense. I am NOT convinced that all the new
safety rules from the past few years are a good idea - the fact that a
school with a small budget can no longer have a 160 lb vaulter hold 2 feet
down on a 15' pole rated at 150 lbs is absurd.

And HS girls can wear bun huggers but not bicycle shorts You can
wear the bicycle length shorts under bun huggers though. Absurd!!! The
Nat. Fed. says it's ok for volleyballers to wear the bicycle shorts but not
tracksters?? Explain that one!!
