And I changed it to "de-facto".

Personally, I would consider vote just to change status to "approved" seems
pointless.

I sort of agree...I let myself get sucked into it, while I only wanted to
upgrade from "in use" by simply polling opinion.
On the other hand, it feels unfinished to skip the end vote.

I would like to see it through now, but I probably won't do it again! I do
think my action has led to some attention and improvement, though.

You wouldn't vote "no" because of this, I hope?

I believe setting up voting to approve a tag with "de-facto"-status is a
waste of time, particularly if you do not intend to refine the definition,
and an approval will only "downgrade" the tag from "de-facto" to
"approved". People have already voted on the tag by using it thousands of
times.

it'll not change the status of the tag :)

voting is about a proposal, not about "tags"

the proposals endorse tags, this is playing with words.
It has the merit of saying that several people have collectively
thought about the choice of tag and that it seemed coherent to them,
at at the end we document this with an approved status on the tag page.
it is on average of better quality than a tag that became defacto
because the automatic autocompletion of an editor encouraged the use

of the first occurrence of the tag without anyone having a critical look.

so for me if the person makes an RFC to have an opinion on the proposal,
I have nothing against his request, on the contrary, take care about
quality is always positive

Voting is about formal acceptance of the de facto usage.
I do not expect any no's, but maybe someone was against the tag al these
years and now finally gets the chance to say no.
A fail will not change anything to the de facto usage.

If a bunch of no votes appear, I will simply cancel my proposal. But I
trust it'll pass. So far, no criticism on the mapping itself has been
posted.

(If I had tried the same with landcover=trees|grass don't worry, I
won't)

are you going to change the definition with the vote? Let's imagine you
start a voting for the exact same text as is now on the tag definition
page.
If it wins it will change the tag status from "de-facto" to "approved". If
it fails, will it change the tag status from "de-facto" to what? Strictly,
voting is about a proposal, not about "tags" (it is about the
definition/meaning that should be associated to the tags).

Sorry, I wasn't clear. The current status of the tag is de facto (was: in
use, but someone, not me, amended that). The proposal intends to alter
that from de facto to approved, by voting.

No, it has not been 'approved' so it would be misleading to claim it is
'approved'. (Approval is given by voting on a proposal these days.)

The status might be 'de-facto'.

would there be opposition to change it to "de-facto"?
