Re: Microsoft Warns Windows 7 Has A Serious Problem

2016-05-05 Thread Tony C via Talk
I have had Macffee let two virsus in on two different PC's. Once was
serveral years ago on an XP Pc and the other was just a couple months ago on
a brand new Del. The only reason I had Mcaffee on it to begin with is it cam
with the PC and I got a one year free subscription to it. I only used it 1
1/2 months before I got virus on my PC. I had the paid version ofr AVG on my
Win 8 PC, so I went ahead ans sprung for AVG for the Win 10 pc and now mo
jproblems.

Russ,

I don't know where all of the windows 10 bashing got started, but go ahead
and upgrade to windows 10. Its free until July of this year and unless you
have some really old peripherals, they should work just fine in Windows 10.
I'm running Windows 10 on all of our computers and I do not regret
upgrading!

RE: virus protector

2016-05-05 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
I'm not Brian. But, the answer to your question regarding Windows Defender
is yes, it works well with Window-eyes. Windows Defender took the place of
Microsoft Security Essentials beginning with the release of Windows 8. I am
now using it with Windows 10. Just because a computer comes with a specific
antivirus software, you don't have to use it. Windows Defender is free,
runs in the background, and is unobtrusive.

I have noticed these things since I have installed the newest version of

First, when reading a certain email, a kind of minicatalog, WE is very

Second, when I am writing a message in Thunderbird, the backspace

get the Windows sound.

O, I almost forgot. I have WE 9.4.

Thank you.

Re: Forbes article on windows 7

2016-05-05 Thread Evan Reese via Talk
Okay, here's the text of the article. Don't know whether the links in the
article will come through, but you'll at least be able to read the text. And
I haven't edited out the ads, so you'll just need to arrow down through them
and pick up the thread on the other side.

Earlier this year
Microsoft
MSFT +0.15%
warned users that
Windows 7 has serious problems
. I dismissed its claims as a desperate attempt to shift copies of Windows
10 (and
I still do), but now Microsoft has warned of a new serious Windows 7 problem
that

is very real – even though it makes
no sense whatsoever…
In short: Microsoft has made a seemingly small yet completely bizarre tweak
to Windows

Update on Windows 7 and confirmed it is crippling many users’ PCs.
The tweak? It switched the status of Windows 7 update KB3133977 from
‘Optional’ to
‘Recommended’. The bizarre part? Despite acknowledging the problems,
Microsoft knew

they would occur in advance and it has no plans to do anything about it.

Ok, let’s put some meat on these bones.
PCs That Suddenly Won’t Start
It all centres around Asus motherboards.
Now 27 years old, Asus is one of the largest PC component makers and
supplies motherboards

to many of the world’s biggest PC makers. Recently it enabled Secure Boot in
UEFI
on all its motherboards. This wasn’t a problem for older PCs because Windows
7 didn’t
support Secure Boot, that is until KB3133977 came along in March and enabled
it.

Initially the fallout was small. Asus
confirmed
the problem, Microsoft
confirmed
the problem. But the best news was KB3133977 was an optional Windows 7
update so
it had to be manually installed to take effect. The solution was simple:
just steer

clear of KB3133977 (aka do nothing) and you’d be fine.
Then last month – for some bizarre reason – Microsoft made KB3133977 a
‘Recommended’
update. The result was every user running Windows 7 and default Windows
Update settings

(the vast majority) would find the update now installed automatically.
And then everyone with an Asus motherboard was hit.

A Global Problem
As InfoWorld’s Windows expert Woody Leonhard
notes
“I’m now seeing problems reported from all over the globe about Windows 7
machines
that suddenly won’t boot”. Affected machines simply show a red box which
says:

update KB3133977. Image credit: Asus
All of which does nothing to pinpoint the problem or solve it for those
without a

second secured boot device. In short: you’d be screwed.
The Good News And Staying Safe
The good news is Asus has now
issued a workaround
to get PCs booting up again. Furthermore Asus must take some of the blame
for not
reacting faster when KB3133977 presented a potential landmine and issuing
new updates

to its motherboards.
How do you know if you have an Asus motherboard in your Windows 7 PC? Go to:
All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
and select System Information
. This will list your PC’s components, including the motherboard.
One downside: some major PC makers like
Dell
and HP rebrand the motherboard as the computer’s model number. In which case
you

should do a web search on your model or call the manufacturer directly.
The Bad News And What Comes Next
As for the bad news? It’s Microsoft’s reaction.
On the plus side, Microsoft did update
the support document
for KB3133977 with a warning which states: “After you install update 3133977
on
a Windows 7 x64-based system that includes an Asus-based main board, the
system does

not start”.
But Microsoft also uses the document an opportunity to promote upgrades to
Windows

10:
Microsoft's KB3133977 support page now advises users to install Windows 10
to fix

their problems. Image credit: Microsoft
Microsoft’s KB3133977 support page now advises users to install Windows 10
to fix

their problems. Image credit: Microsoft
Microsoft has also done nothing to modify KB3133977 or release a new patch
so users
with Asus motherboards don’t run into this problem in the first place.
Furthermore,
at the time of publishing, KB3133977 remains a ‘Recommended’ in Windows
Update for

Windows 7.
Needless to say, conspiracy theorists will have a ball seeing it as yet

Very interesting, and pretty much par for the course for Microsoft. But that
is not the Forbes article I read, the one about the Important update that is
checked by default, and, if you have a certain motherboard, and you install
that update, your system won't boot. That's the scary one, especially since
Microsoft knew about it and didn't fix it..

Microsoft Warns Windows 7 Has Serious Problems
Gordon Kelly , Contributor

Speaking to Windows Weekly, Microsoft Marketing chief Chris Capossela
explained that users who choose Windows 7 do so “at your own risk, at your
own peril” and he revealed Microsoft has concerns about its future
software and hardware compatibility, security and more.

“We do worry when people are running an operating system that’s 10 years
old that the next printer they buy isn’t going to work well, or they buy a
new game, they buy Fallout 4, a very popular game, and it doesn’t work on
a bunch of older machines,” Capossela stated. “And so, as we are pushing
our ISV [Independent Software Vendor] and hardware partners to build great
new stuff that takes advantage of Windows 10 that obviously makes the old
stuff really bad and not to mention viruses and security problems.”

He also stressed it is “so incredibly important to try to end the
fragmentation of the Windows install base” and to get users to a “safer
place”.

There’s only one problem with Capossela’s statements: they are complete
rubbish.

Windows 7 is no less secure than Windows 10 (it will be supported until
2020) and no less compatible with new hardware and software. In fact its
far greater market share means it is developers’ priority and has greater
compatibility with legacy programmes and peripherals. If Fallout 4 won’t
run on your Windows 7 computer, it will be upgrading your components not
installing Windows 10 which fixes that.

As for fragmentation, the only issue that creates is for Microsoft and its
target of getting one billion devices running Windows 10 within 2-3 years
of release. And this is where the true motivation for Capossela’s
statements become clear:

“We think every machine that is capable of running Windows 10 we should be
doing everything we possibly can to get people to move to Windows 10…We
are going to try to find that right balance, but we just know there’s a
lot of people out there who constantly kick the can down the street
without a little bit more of a, frankly, a push. And so, there’s no doubt
with a base as big as ours, it is hard to move anyone to a new model
without angering some people. We don’t want to anger anybody, but we do
feel a responsibility to get people to a much better place, and Windows 10
is a much better place than Windows 7. We will always give you a way out,
but we’re trying to find the right threat balance.”

This phrase – “threat balance” – is telling. Microsoft has been cranking
up the pressure on Windows 7 and Windows 8 users to upgrade and, in my
opinion, the ‘balance’ was replaced by ‘threat’ a long time ago due to
mandatory Windows 10 downloads, automatic upgrade attempts and now
Capossela’s claims which add up to nothing more than deliberate
misinformation designed to unsettle users.

As I’ve written before, at its core Windows 10 is a very capable operating
system with immense promise but it is also overly controlling and I can
respect those Windows 7 and Windows 8 users who choose to stay where they
are. And this is the part Microsoft has forgotten: technically it keeps
giving users a choice, but by enforcing nagging pop-ups, cutting opt-out
options and spreading groundless fear for the average user it appears
there is no choice at all…

I admit, I'm a little behind on my updates on this Dell laptop. So I checked
my Important updates, and that KB3133977 is in there, and it's checked. I
have no idea as to whether I have an Asus motherboard in here, so I
unchecked the update, just to be on the safe side. I can't find anything
about my motherboard in my System Information. I can find my processor, hard
drive numbers, Ram and all that, but nothing about a motherboard. I'm sure
not gonna take the chance of installing that update.!

don’t want to anger anybody, but we do feel a responsibility to get people to a
much better place, and Windows 10 is a much better place than Windows 7. We
will always give you a way out, but we’re trying to find the right threat
balance.”

This phrase – “threat balance” – is telling. Microsoft has been cranking up the
pressure on Windows 7 and Windows 8 users to upgrade and, in my opinion, the
‘balance’ was replaced by ‘threat’ a long time ago due to mandatory Windows 10
downloads, automatic upgrade attempts and now Capossela’s claims which add up
to nothing more than deliberate misinformation designed to unsettle users.

As I’ve written before, at its core Windows 10 is a very capable operating
system with immense promise but it is also overly controlling and I can respect
those Windows 7 and Windows 8 users who choose to stay where they are. And this
is the part Microsoft has forgotten: technically it keeps giving users a
choice, but by enforcing nagging pop-ups, cutting opt-out options and spreading
groundless fear for the average user it appears there is no choice at all…

Re: Microsoft Warns Windows 7 Has A Serious Problem

2016-05-05 Thread Chris Skarstad via Talk
Well, these days I really do believe it's safe to upgrade, now that
Microsoft has ironed out a lot of issues in the initial releases of
Windows 10. But I also understand that people don't want to be
constantly reminded that they should upgrade something that's working
for them just fine. Since I'm getting a new pc I figured it was time to
just go ahead and make the jump.

I've ordered a new pc running Windows 10 and have no worries about the
upgrade. I was able to mess around with my room mate's new laptop

around. Sure, some things are different like the use of the ribbon in
file explorer but that can be worked around. I'm not very good at it
but I can learn.

Russ,

I don't know where all of the windows 10 bashing got started, but go ahead and
upgrade to windows 10. Its free until July of this year and unless you have
some really old peripherals, they should work just fine in Windows 10. I'm
running Windows 10 on all of our computers and I do not regret upgrading!

Hi Veronica,

If you're on Windows 10 then the antivirus which comes with it is
sufficient.

Hth,

Rod

So recently I found out that my Norton Virus protector could be the cause of
all my problems with Window Eyes. If that is true, then what is a good
choice for me?

Veronica

I have noticed these things since I have installed the newest version of
Thunderbird.

First, when reading a certain email, a kind of minicatalog, WE is very
slow to respond when I arrow down through the message. This does not
happen with shorter messages.

Second, when I am writing a message in Thunderbird, the backspace
doesn't always work when I want to correct a mistake; when I press it, I
get the Windows sound.

O, I almost forgot. I have WE 9.4.

Thank you.

Peace.

Linette
