take a look at the near by explorer app if you have a i phone or android fone.
or tablet if it has gps built in.

http://tech.aph.org/ne/
it only costs $80 for the full version.
if you use the on board maps and points of interest it will not use any
cellular data so it is low cost to use.
you could try the free android version. but this one uses the google maps and
points of interest so it would use cellular data and it is less responsive then
useing the on board data files.

tonite I was surfing the Blind Tech Podcasts on my iPhone and came

in with the new and out with the old and how Window-eyes is no more.
One of them stated words to the effect that VFO wanted everyone to use
one screen reader. Also, mention was made of Jaws market share (my
words) in the voc rehab community.

I'm wondering if Window-Eyes will be the beginning of a trend where
awesome technology gets gobbled up and lost in the future.

I ask this because I'm toying with purchasing Sendero's Seeing Eye
GPS-Xt app. Thing is, Sendero lists a bunch of companies they are

to be affiliated with GW. Hims used to make the book Sense, but that
has changed into a product called, I think, Blaze, probably no more
support for Book Sense although, like W-E, it is probably still in use.

Hims-GW -- Window-eyes gone. could Hims-Sendero mean the Seeing Eye
GPs XT app will be short lived?

This may seem like an off topic question, but being Window-Eyes loyal
users perhaps listers will best understand my concern and perhapsprovide

RE: Window-Eyes as a trend setter anda question

2017-07-14 Thread Sky Mundell via Talk
Unfortunately, JAWS was and still is always the screen reader of choice for
voc rehab. Due to this, other products like Window-Eyes had a harder time of
getting to the top due to JAWS having the lead in the market. The reason
why JAWS came into existence in the first place was that Ted Henter, who
originally developed it, found shortcomings in the other dos products. He
used one called Vert but he found shortcomings in Vert so he got an investor
and he developed JAWS for dos and then for windows. There are a lot of
people where I live who have never even tried Window-Eyes before. Some do
own it but the majority of them have always used JAWS right from the start
and they don't see the need to change screen readers. They probably might
stick with JAWS until the day they die.

Please remember that system restore has many roll back points. I would
select a restore point just before I had accidentally uninstalled a
program. Just be careful not to roll your machine back too far, but
just where you made a mistake. Windows updates would automatically be
restored if any were affected by system restore.

Re: QUERY

2017-07-14 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk
I have been following this thread and strongly agree. I had to do System
Restore twice with sighted help to recover Windows. I have used it myself to
get rid of programs that ci couldn't remove with Programs and Features. One
would certainly not use System Restore if there is a risk of restoring a
virus. You should be careful in using it. It can be used without sighted
assistance when run normally. If you are concerned about security updates,
these usually can be reapplied easily since Windows or your security program
will likely prompt you to reinstall them after the System Restore is
complete.

Mine hung at my work location at 97 percent and I tried 2 additional times
to update. Will revisit it on Monday as can't afford a lot of downtime.
Profiles are rather secured here but they did give me Power User Access so
doubt it's related to my type of access or lack there of.
At least good to know that others besides myself are fffected.

IN my case, having the non tandom version, the check for updates was not
available. Now that I now have the tandom version, the check for updates is
available.

Are you saying that if I have the choice in help to check for updates,
that I do indeed have the tandem version?

Well, yesterday I tried updating Jaws to it's latest release through Help,
check for updates. It reported an update and I went through the procedure
of
updating, it reported starting download and stayed at zero percent. Tried
it

twice and gave up. Never had this problem with wineyes in 20 years. I'll
just wait until fall's major update. Anyhow, Jaws is my last choice, I use
wineyes, then NVDA before using Jaws!

O.T. Window Events Sound Effects Sometimes not Working

2017-07-14 Thread peter Chin via Talk

Hello List,

Sometimes I just can't get my sound effects under the Windows Events to
work. Can anyone explain why that happens and how I can get it to work
consistently?

Thanks.
