The reason Windows wifi cards are off by default and behave according to their power management settings is to save power. So, if you disable the power management setting for your wifi card, your laptop will consume more power. This is a windows 10 laptop computer. I use WIFI to connect to my home network. I also use it to connect to a WIFI network at a different location. With my ipad I can set the WIFI settings for each network and I can connect to each one without doing anything.
