using window-eyes 9.3.1 to navigate difficult web sites

2016-01-18 Thread Rebecca Ilniski via Talk
Hi. I have the latest version of we on a windows 7 64 bit laptop. I
occassionally do surveys online and find that some of the web sites are
difficult to navigate with we either because the questions aren't
reading correctly or graphics are not labeled. Also there's one site I
use www.instantcashsweepstakes.com that I can answer the first question
out of the 3 but when I try to answer the second or third the choices
are not visible. What settings in we do I need to have enabled to read
web pages that are difficult or don't read correctly? I could be doing
surveys on www.tellwut.com and some of the surveys that are third party
don't have the graphics labeled in som eof the questions choices. I
listened to navigating the web with we on the gwmicro website under
window-eyes tutorials. Is there any other resource I may need or
update? I did make sure my firefox was updated and the adobe flash
plug-in keeps crashing which may be an issue I don't know. Any ideas
would be appreciated. I also did listen to using the mouse with we
also. Thanks.

2016-01-18 Thread via Talk
Try internet explorer, but sometimes the website is poorly designed and
there isn't much you can do -- take them one at a time, ask on the list
about each one, and write to the developers, sometimes they will listen
and sometimes not.

it was the windows u a c, waiting for your windows log on password. you get
this with all the programs you install or uninstall.
usually if you alt tab away and back again w e will get focus on it and you
can have speech for that log on edit box. then tab to the yes button. or press

Hi All:

Well, uninstalling Webroot Secure Anywhere, easier said than done. When I went
to Programs and Features on the Windows 8.1 machine to uninstall, and answered
yes to uninstalling it, I got an edit box and Webroot was looking for me to
enter something. The screen is so inaccessible that I couldn't figure out what
it's looking for me to enter. I tried disabling all of the Webroot processes
and re-installing WE after using the WE Emergency Removal tool per Chris's
suggestion, and that still doesn't work.

I guess I'm going to have to have Geek Squad or someone else uninstall this
thing so I can get back to using the screen reader I most enjoy, Window-Eyes.

Hi Ray,

Unfortunately, the issues you are seeing are due to Webroot Secure anywhere.

You may need to run the emergency removal utility , close Webroot (stop its
protection) before installing Window-eyes and install Window-eyes again.
Webroot is blocking Window-eyes components from being installed properly.

As far as your wife's h for heading key not working or all other quick
navigation keys if there is a setting in Webroot that deals with keylogging,
turn it off.
It doesn't like the fact you are pressing an H and Window-eyes is doing
something with that H. It thinks Window-eyes is logging your keystrokes so it
doesn't let them through.

Webroot was supposed to have white listed Window-eyes. Apparently it didn't.

If you want something that works like webroot but is more accessible, check out
GData internet security. In GData you'll need to turn off its keylogging
function as well to get the quick navigation keys to work.

Hi Ray:

I think that all your problems with the Windows 8.1 system and
Window-eyes 9.3.1 stem from the fact that that file was flagged by
your Antivirus software, and it sounds like that file that was flagged
is one which is essential for Window-eyes to run properly.
I had a problem like that when I first installed Window-eyes 9 on my
system. The file that was flagged was one of the components that was
necessary for running scripts, so I was a bit lucky I suppose.
My solution was to install a different antivirus package, although you
may not want to do that if you like the one that you are using.
You might ask why I went to the bother of installing another antivirus
program, instad of telling the antivirus package to ignore the file in
question. The answer is that I tried that and it didn't seem to work.
The antivirus package continued to flag that file, so I got rid of
that package and installed a different antivirus software. Now
everything works fine.

Hi Kevin, Chris and all:

I was beginning to think Webroot may be the problem. I'll gladly get
rid of it as it's not accessible at all. Just hate the fact I got it
for free.

What antivirus packages do folks recommend? I think I've still got a
Vipre subscription, and I've also got Windows Defender. I'm
considering going back to Vipre; we had issues with my wife's old
computer and VIPRE but I think that had more to do with that machine
having only 2GB of RAM.

Thanks, this really helps; I prefer Window-Eyes to other screen
readers. I'm just curious, and don't expect anyone here to know the
answer, why JFW installed, especially on the WIN 10 machine without
the same kinds of issues.

Unfortunately, the issues you are seeing are due to Webroot Secure anywhere.

You may need to run the emergency removal utility , close Webroot (stop its

Webroot is blocking Window-eyes components from being installed properly.

As far as your wife's h for heading key not working or all other quick

Hello WE Support:

I am writing to let you know about some major issues we’re having with
Window-Eyes 9.3.1 both on our Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 machines.
Here is what is happening and what I’ve tried.

On the Windows 8.1 machine, I ran the update from Window-Eyes 9.2 to
Window-Eyes 9.3.1 yesterday. When I got the update installed and re-started
the computer, my antivirus package, Webroot Secure Anywhere, flagged what I
believe was a Window-Eyes DLL file as a threat. I can’t remember the entire
file name, but it started with GWHK and had the extension DLL. Webroot isn’t
the most accessible tool, but I was able to get over to where it said
de-select, click it and then hit continue.

The problems didn’t end there. When I go to my desktop, I hear Window-Eyes say
‘No Selected Item’. When I arrow around on the desktop, I don’t hear anything.

When I went into my documents folder, I noticed that using the up and down
arrow I wasn’t hearing my files and folders being read. This was also true
when I went to the folder view on my external hard drive, as well as when I
typed in a search for something from the start menu and hit enter and the
search results came up.

Thinking there might have been something wrong with the update, and, since I
have a full 9.3.1 install because we got my wife a new Windows
10 computer, I uninstalled Window-Eyes and used the 9.3.1 full install to
re-install the software. The problems I had didn’t go away. I notice if I,
say, go into the documents folder, then shut down and re-start Window-Eyes, I
can then read down through the list of files and folders. But, If I go into a
folder, I have the same problem where I can’t read the list of files or folders
using the arrow key and have to shut down and re-start Window-Eyes again.

I noticed something when I initially go into folders like documents.
When I do that, then do ctrl+backslash to open the Window-Eyes control panel,
the file announced is default.set. When I re-start Window-Eyes, then, go into

Now, for the issues I’m seeing on my wife’s new Windows 10 laptop.
Basically, they are the same. However, I’m also seeing a situation

install to load Window-Eyes onto the Windows 10 machine. When I
re-started the computer after doing this, Webroot didn’t flag the same
DLL as a threat.

Can you help us resolve these issues? I did manage to look at some of
the Windows 10 information in the knowledge base and didn’t find that
there was anything readily apparent I would need to do. If there’s
something with the computer that I may have to have visually checked,
can you tell me what I should have someone look for? I have a tech
support plan for three devices from Geek Squad so they can help me.
Or, can we set up a time for me to remotely connect with you so you
can look and see what might be going on on each computer? I can make
arrangements to be here during the day to do this.

Thanks, looking forward to hearing from you.

Get Built-in Optical Character Recognition and a Faster User Experience with
Window-Eyes 9.3

Window-Eyes 9.3 is now available providing customers with the ability to
recognize text from files or the screen with built in Optical Character
Recognition. This version also offers a more reliable and stable user
experience that will help maximize your productivity at work, home, and school.
Keep reading to learn more about the features and enhancements in Window-Eyes
9.3:

Extract Text from Files, Images and the Screen Quickly and Easily

*Recognize text in inaccessible scanned PDF files.

*Recognize text from images in .bmp, .jpg, .png, and .tiff formats.

*Choose from several different kinds of file types to recognize,
including .txt, .html, .xml, and .zip.

*If Office is installed, you can also OCR documents ending in .docx,
.pptx, and .xlsx.

*Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files can be recognized, including text
found in WordArt to ensure readability.
All-New Read to End

*Read-to-end has been completely rewritten to provide the most
responsive and accurate reading experience.

*When read-to-end is stopped, it will start again from the word that
was last spoken to help save time and increase efficiency.

*If a Braille display is connected, Braille output will remain in sync
with speech as documents are read aloud.

*Hot keys used to increase or decrease speech are much more responsive,
enabling users to more easily read documents in the manner they prefer.
Microsoft Office

*Improved reading of all spell check dialogs in Office 2010, 2013, and
2016.

*Responsiveness of the Outlook 2010, 2013, and 2016 inbox under Windows
10 has been improved to make reading email faster.

*Outlook's conversation view in 2010, 2013, and 2016 is now supported
so that users can group messages with the same subject enabling reading of all
messages within a thread quickly and easily.

*If Window-Eyes was restarted while Outlook was open, message
virtualization would stop functioning until Outlook was restarted. This issue
has been fixed.

*When a PowerPoint slideshow started, and Window-Eyes was set to
automatically read the entire document, only the content of the first slide
would be spoken. This has been fixed.

*If the version of Window-Eyes for users of Microsoft Office was in
use, and the Office 365 sign-in window was closed without first entering any
text, Window-Eyes would crash. This has been resolved.

*Other miscellaneous fixes.
Mouse Improvements

*The physical mouse now reads UIA and IA2 programs, which improves the
reading experience in programs such as web browsers and modern Windows apps.

*A hot key to continue a mouse search in reverse has been added.

*Window-Eyes can now read an entire line or only a word under the
pointer as the physical mouse moves across the screen.

*The mouse can now be set to read instant, hover, or no echo when
moving the mouse around the screen. If the user sets it to hover, the amount of
time can be adjusted before the information under the mouse is spoken. This
allows low vision users better control over what they hear when the mouse moves
around the screen.

*Other miscellaneous fixes.
Other Fixes

*Responsiveness in the Windows 10 File Explorer has been improved.

*Quickly check the status of wireless network connections with a single

to the next step with the welcome and the changes it will make, and do I
want this or that? After I told it to go ahead and install, I got this
message that I couldn't install this upgrade on my existing copy of window

I am looking forward to downloading the new Window-Eyes this evening my time.

I am also encouraged that amongst the enhancements, read-to-end has been
redesigned for proper synchronising with braille displays.

However: there is a long list of needed braille support updates, which I have,
along with others, been requesting across several product releases.

Synchronising as part of read-to-end is different from braille autoscroling,
which is just one of several recommendations I have provided. Proper
autoscorlling allows for adjustment of the display's panning independently of
speech.

Improving mouse performance is also a significant development. But are there
added braille hot keys to take advantage of these improvements?

Speaking of braille hot keys: one of my suggestions has been that these be
reorganised, to follow the grouping which applies to speech related hot keys.

What is AI Squared true commitment to braille? When will we see these much
needed braille improvements, not of all of which are listed in this response.

Fixes to improve the performance of Outlook are very welcomed, along with
changes to the app update menu.

Vaughan.

I am also encouraged that amongst the enhancements, read-to-end has been
redesigned for proper synchronising with braille displays.

However: there is a long list of needed braille support updates, which I
have, along with others, been requesting across several product releases.

Synchronising as part of read-to-end is different from braille autoscroling,
which is just one of several recommendations I have provided. Proper
autoscorlling allows for adjustment of the display's panning independently
of speech.

Improving mouse performance is also a significant development. But are
there added braille hot keys to take advantage of these improvements?

Speaking of braille hot keys: one of my suggestions has been that these be
reorganised, to follow the grouping which applies to speech related hot
keys.

What is AI Squared true commitment to braille? When will we see these much

Fixes to improve the performance of Outlook are very welcomed, along with

to keep up with the demand. Probably easier said than done.

I would encourage patience as our infrastructure deals with everyone else
trying to do the same thing.

Introducing Window-Eyes 9.3.1

2015-12-16 Thread Aaron Smith via Talk

*Quickly check the status of wireless network connections with a single
hot key.

*Responsiveness for Eloquence, eSpeak, RealSpeak, Vocalizer, and
Vocalizer Expressive synthesizers has been significantly improved.

*The WE cursor (which allows you to explore the screen without moving
the mouse pointer) has been renamed to the invisible cursor to better reflect
its functionality.

*The QuickStart Wizard has been replaced with a new app called Setup
Wizard providing a new visual interface and more options to help users get
started using Window-Eyes.

*The app update notification options that are displayed when updates
are available have been expanded to include a tone, dialog box, tooltip, or any
combination of the three. This enables users to select how they want to be
notified of app updates.

*Support has been added for the Handy Tech Active Star, Handy Tech
Modular, and BAUM VarioUltra displays.

*Numerous stability fixes and performance enhancements have been added.
